Magnus Carlsen vs Vishy Anand | Armageddon, 2019 Altibox Norway Chess

  • Featured is the Armageddon game between World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand from Round 1 of the 2019 Altibox Norway Chess tournament. We observe an English opening with Anand opting for the Kramnik-Shirov Counterattack. An imbalance of minor pieces quickly surfaces, and a critical moment is reached by move 12 where Carlsen plays a zwischenzug in Nxe5. Anand's instinctual reply seems completely natural, but in reality it is a grave mistake which allows the World Chess Champion to both maintain an extremely powerful dark-squared bishop, and play for two results.

    Another excellent upload, Jerry. Thanks for this. I have to say I am starting to like the armageddon rules. I don’t see it becoming common in every super tournament any time soon, but it is definitely refreshing and interesting. Paired with the fact that you get no extra time after move 40 and only a very small increment, this must be an extremely stressful tournament for the players. Sure creates a lot of drama and suspense for us though

    Hi Jerry I had a question about the armageddon rule-set. When you say that black has draw odds, does that means in the event of an in-game draw that black loses and white wins?
    I.e. White must force a resignation/mate in order to avoid losing? Thanks!

      @thecityofjoy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      elink1 Good question. Just thinking about it... Black did play e4 and Knight came to d5 to block off rook on D file.. So rook move may be premature.. Better was and I have not checked it... B- f5 and swapping off Knight on d7.. Then rook can come to d6 real quick and double on d file.. Double trouble!... Also N-f6 looks dubious.. Why not N-b4 so Knight can come to d3 and block the D file... Just my 2 cents.. Oh well what do I know Jerry?

      Then white would have already achieved its goal of constructing a double pawn structure on f. Then the white queen doesn't have to take the pawn. Its just a disguised queen exchange with a better result for white.

    11:18-11:40 instead of these pawn exchanges, is there something faulty with Nb4? Unleashes both rooks, preventing the knight from being taken by the d4 rook due to Rxd1+, rook for rook and queen if black takes, else just thank you for the rook, throws heat at the queen( if rook or bishop jump in, black says thanks for the queen), and white cant respond to Nb4 with Rxd7-the rooks can be exchanged, black still has tempi on the bishop and queen.

    • @valjohnson7112
      @valjohnson7112 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondered about that move too, although white bishop can take bishop with check so it just leads to mass trades as far as I can see. but maybe that Is good for black

    • @Dave-C21
      @Dave-C21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valjohnson7112 I actually missed white being on the bishop, but queen could easily take with no loss of position, and actually getting out of the punch Rxd7;
      28...Nb4
      29 Bxe6+, Qxe6
      30 Rxd7, Rxd7
      31 Rxd7!? (would be a blunder here for white, Whites queen's still hanging in this position while blacks is not, 31... Nxc2 would follow, and black may have to deal with rook and bishop pressure- Rook and bishop vs Queen and Knight)
      If instead after
      28 ....Nb4
      29 Rxd7 Rxd7
      30 Rxd7, (blacks queen is hit, And the bishop is pinned), Qxd7
      31 Bxe6+, Qxe6
      32 white moves the queen to safety, say Qb1 to tempo the knight. Its now Queen and good bishop vs Queen and active knight, with a space advantage for white- but its black to move. Black can possibly profit a pawn if white isn't on the knight, or sort of slam the door on the queenside with a5- it protects the knight, stop some of blacks momentum and maybe seek a queentrade- Again if nothing else, its black to move, and whites good bishop is still only a one color piece- If you can somehow get the queens off, more or less liquefy the queenside, black is atleast holding position, as opposed to the massive advantage we saw on the tale the tape.
      You might also see the pieces exchanged such that Black has 2 rooks to whites Rook and Dark Bishop and even though black is up that bit of material that bishop is a potent piece, and really helps control the queenside. Again, White is still going to be in the drivers seat due to that bishop being as powerful as it is, but the position is a LOT less one-sided with Nb5 as opposed to the move of the game.
