I am retired band Director and I learned one thing. Never play a tune first if you know your opposition plays it better. To tell the truth I wouldn't play it at all. If they were marching out the stadium I would and only then.
you know, I said the exact same thing.. Asu just set themselves up I was thinking the same thing about Souuthern when they Played it 1st against Jackson, Until i heard their arrangement, and power. But i said if any band would play it better or uniquely equivalent to Jackson, Southern would be that band.

Southerns Holy Grail sounds better and it was arranged to show the POWER of this band. Tubas arrangements are unique from ALL the others and that makes theirs better. Also that drum roll close to the end is a idle threat and warning to the other competitor band. It clearly means ," Get ready to be destroyed by the POWER you are about to hear and witness from Southerns band. It was clearly written for a power band like SU. No band can match Southern and the thing is even the other Band Directors know that to be true.
In a nutshell, It sounds like you just said other band directors are in agreeance that SU band is the best band and that other bands are no match for them and are scared of them.....did I get that right? Great job ASU!! We should never questioned anyone's interpretation and/or perception of what is good or bad. Ones perception is ones reality. I think both band did a great Job. That being said...Man, as a former member of the Human Jukebox (Fall'82-SPR'86) and a follower of them via TH-cam .... hats off to the arranger; this guy (I think his name is Haymer) is awesome, he seem to truly understands Jukebox core value "POWER". As for being loud, SU always have been and SU will probably always be loud, so all can either take it or leave it. We have always been the in-your-face type band and arrogant to a fault. Why? Because we truly believe we are the best.

Their Holy Grail is to Powerful,Intense and Dramatic straight through, with no breaks in between except the Break down which comes back in with pure intensity. whereas Alabama's was climbing up there, and going back down. you kept waiting for that Power pentacle but it never got there, the way J State's finished with it. sorry #1 Southern's, #2 J-State.

From the beginning of the song the articulation of the notes were sub par, and for the band to be that size, they should have way more volume than that. You're so used to hearing basic music, that when you hear something of real quality you think it's trash. My people are ASU alumni, they're not a bad band, they need better arrangements, and maybe a different director. They're just not on the same level as SU. Here's a better example, NOTHING ASU played can compare to the first song Southern played in the 5th, the song "Beyond". Again it's not hate, it's truth. I was at this game and this was truly a battle. ASU playing this song was strategic and it got under the skin of SU. It was sort of how dare they. I have come to realize that this song comes down to a point of personal taste and I like both band versions of this song. However SU did not out blow ASU!! ASU was just as powerful if not more. SU just seems more powerful because of the drum line break where as ASU tubes continue to play throughout the song. In addition ASU only started playing this song at the Magic City Classic and the HBCU had already crowded SU their favorite when it comes to this song. ASU version was more energetic, entertaining, unique and dynamic. GREAT JOB ASU!!!!!
