Owned a few of these in between owning the OG M2 and a M2C over the last few years. Now back in a manual shadow 3 door with decent specification and have done a few subtle changes with lowering springs, MPerformance gearstick and a stage 1 map. Absolute blast of a car and keeps you on your toes plus it makes a nice companion to my E46 M3.

What a combination! I bought an E46 to daily as I found the 140 was getting less special driving it 7 days a week. The E46 is only a 318ci, but because of it, when I jump into the 140 to blast on a B road or track it, I absolutely love the thing!

I like my M140i, the bits which let it down are the lack of LSD and the standard BMW (rather than M) spec suspension which means it doesn't handles as well as it could. I feel the injector issues are bit overblown. It can happen but it is quite rare, and even the later injectors have the occasional issue.

I've had mine for two years now and I love it just as much as the day I bought it. The only down side is that it has to be on a dry road to use the power.

I had one. Loved it. But man it’s a harsh ride. I didn’t spec dynamic suspension but was advised it didn’t make much difference. I regret that decision. Having a baby meant it had to go. It would have knackered my wee lads spine. So now have a T Roc. . . . don’t ask

Had one of these for 4 years and loved. I did, however, have every possible issue. Every time it went near a garage it cost me a grand. Fuel injectors had an issue due to a lack of use (during lockdown). Oil filter completely fell to bits and disintegrated, My window regulators shit the bed and both sides gave up within a week of each other and i also had a control module issue that threw up an EML and stopped me from being able to select a drive mode or anything. I'd still have another one in a heartbeat.

Thanks for a good video. The M140i is a bucket list car but not sure if i'd want to get rid of my W204 C63 for one just yet, i'd miss the noise. I will definitely own an M140I in the future, with an M Performance exhaust.

I loved mine, owned it for 2 years and 25 k miles. 5 door mineral grey 2019. Only issues I had were screenwasher always frozen/clogged/not working and rattles. Its rear end always felt loose under full acceleration, I dont only mean traction but the whole rear suspension moved around a fair bit. I replaced it with an OG M2 which is s much better sorted, less rattle prone, steering and ride are better, feels properly plant. But because its so much more controllable and its chassis on point I dont feel the need to floor it for it to come alive like I did in the M140i. The N55 and oem M2 exhaust sounds so much better than the OPF B58 but other than that I miss the engine characteristics of the B58. Id love another M140i as a daily though.

owned my 2018 grey 5 door for 6 months now and really enjoying it.
lowering springs, front and rear braces, wheel spacers and m perf lsd and it drives pretty well.
still a bit jittery on crap roads and under big breaking but its a hoot to drive on good A roads!, would recommend to anyone looking for a lively little beastie to hoon around in on the weekends!.

Nice overview of the M140i. I’ve owned mine for >5 years now and it’s a great car which is very usable especially given today’s roads. The beauty of it is you can waft about in it as a daily but when the occasion presents itself give it a blat and it makes commuting very amusing. The B58 is a peach while somehow manages to be economical too if you’re sensible. Tyres wise I’ve found that Michelin PS5 work very well for keeping it in check on wet roads. It’s practical too, with the seats down it’s like a small van :-).

    • @DjNikGnashers
      @DjNikGnashers 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes agreed, Had mine for 4 years, and moved my daughter to another house using it, seats down and the amount of space is huge.
It's a fantastic car for daily driving, and fine up to 7/10ths driving, but it's normal 1 series chassis does let it down when pushed hard.
I'm in an OG M2 now, and it's firm, clunky, jerky, and less economical, in fact it's not very good as a daily driver at all.
But, when it's being hooned, man it is on another level, steering, ride, damping, cornering, just sublime.

    Nice review mate.
I'm coming up to 5 years ownership and I've never had an issue mechanically. I had a rust bubble on the tailgate which was sorted under warranty.
People who think they handle awfully are usually who watch reviews and haven't driven one, people who have jumped out of a boring AWD 4 pot (no names) and expect to just be able to plant it, or just aren't very good drivers. Is the chassis as good as an M car? Nowhere near. Is it as good as other hot hatches out there? No it isn't. Is it as bad as people make out? Again, no it isn't. Respect the car and it's all fine. Another issue with that is people go straight for more power, stamp their foot on the go faster pedal and then wonder why it's twitchy.
Handling mods are a great place to start, and if you can afford stick an LSD underneath 👍

Have owned a MK3 Focus RS 18 plate for four years. Currently borrowing my brother's 17 plate M140i while he's abroad, as an extended test drive, as a hot hatch lover. The B58 engine is fantastic, and pulls like a missile above 4k to the red line. I find the M140i is only engaging in sport and sport plus drive modes. There's a decent seating position (more adjustable thsn the RS), but in terms of other dynamic ability, the car is severely limited. Too much power for the chassis, numb steering and poor brakes. Can't fault the ZF gear box! Its been good fun to have a swap, but I'm looking forward to getting back to the RS, and my experience has highlighted just how superb the handling of the RS is. The M140i is great at going blisteringly fast in a straight line (in the dry), but doesn't come together as a total hot hatch package. Just shows BHP isn't everything.

This is one of my worries about getting a car like this. If I was to or needed to upgrade something in my house, I might need to sell it to free up some cash, but then finding a car that brings that much joy, would be hard. Also, even if I was just to sell it to upgrade to something else, for around the same money, would also be difficult.
Do you think you will return to having another one or a car of similar power?

Its insane how in Ireland, this particular car with 340 horsepower, rwd costs a mere 1,600 euro to insure. I triple double checked btw. By comparison, with my current experience it would cost me 4,2k to insure a 200hp (less horses even) coupe. Even a golf is like 3k to insure. Madness.
Im 21, nearly 3 years experience and im paying more than a grand per year for insurance on a 1.1L hatchback.
If i could find this car with fair mileage for less than 25k, id buy it in a heartbeat. 30k is a bit much.

Had an M140i for 4 years, spent thousands upgrading parts and tuning it.
For an M Lite hatchback, they are amazing. But, end of the day, they are basically a mega engine (B58), mega gearbox (ZF8), in a standard 118i chassis and body.
No matter how much you spend and how many parts you change, it will never be a real M car.
I'm now in an OG M2, and apart from it being a bit slower in a straight line (365bhp from the N55 in the M2, compared to 455bhp from my tuned B58 in the M140i), everything else about the M2 is literally on another level.

My left washer jet on my m240i seems to be very weak, tried the Milton tablets but it doesn’t seem to have done the trick. Do you think it’s the jet itself or should I put more Milton in it?

    • @DjNikGnashers
      @DjNikGnashers 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

My washer jets completely stopped working on my M140i.
It's very common, and the reason for that is : at the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir, there are two pumps (one for front windscreen one for rear). Both pumps have a plastic mesh filter on.
This mesh gets covered in jelly-like stuff, which actually is caused by mixing different brands of screenwash.
Unfortunately the only solution is to clean these filters.
To do this, I had to take the drivers front wheel off, remove the wheel arch liner, undo a few of the plastic trim covers in the engine bay, and remove the washer reservoir which is located in the wing between the drivers door and the front wheel.
It's a 2 hour job if you're attempting it for the first time.
