I'm 64, and I don't recall there being Ziploc baggies in the 60s! But there were sandwich bags that had a flap you tucked into the bag, and folded a lip, of sorts, over the top. Neat explore, Wonderhussy!
1960s: Ziploc bags are developed - for boiling! You'd submerge one, along with its contents, in water on the stovetop. 1973: Now meant for storage, Ziplocs take off nationally in a big way. 1978: The sandwich size gives new meaning to "brown-bagging it." Got this off the internet 😊
I'm the same age and I just recall the fold over top style in late 60s. My mom put my lunch sandwiches in those Baggies or wrapped in wax paper or Saran Wrap
All I remember from the 60’s were my brown paper lunch bags my mom made my lunch in… hated every sandwich she made me… I guess I was just an ungrateful little twit!
I've come across a few open mine shafts in the Silver Island Mountains near Wendover, UT/NV. I just shined my light in, took a look, and called it good.
Another comment for Kerr McGee..... I used to have to visit the one in Henderson as an independent contractor around the time when Pepcon exploded. Kerr McGee was also making ammonium perchlorate (rocket fuel for the space shuttle) at that time. I was always the one that had to go there because I didn't have any facial hair (to interfere with emergency respirators)......When you entered, you would have to wear those rubber overshoes like the ones she found in the mine. They claimed that if your shoes, or pants were made of regular organic material, & you managed to get any of the perchlorate on them, and they rubbed together (like your pant legs) the stuff would ignite like striking a match....... There were these cut-off drums everywhere with some kind of fire extinguishing liquid in them called jump-tanks in case you caught yourself on fire........ Interesting place........ everything metal inside was in an advanced stage of corrosion. (like those metal cabinets...... Hope they paid well, because it didn't look like a healthy environment to work in.

It looks like maybe there is an external vein up hill on the slope and this was just an exploratory going in to find it and then branch off from there. But at 2-3 feet per day, that took a while to dig out. Another give away is that it goes across the grain with the rock, which miners avoid unless absolutely necessary. You didn't show a good external shot but the size of the waste rock pile gives an indication of how big the excavation is inside.
Hello! Since you are interested in Manson family history, here is something I'm sure you'll find interesting. My father worked for the LAPD during the Manson family Era. My father was the officer that booked Charles Manson into the LAPD headquarters jail. All he told me about Manson was "there was something about his eyes" My dad fought in World War 2 and worked for the LAPD for 27 years. He was a member of the first SWAT team also. It was called "Metro" at the time. SO he was a very tough and brave man. The fact that Charles Manson creeped him out says something 😬 Love your videos! My father also taught my brother and I to love the desert as much as you DO. I spent many hours out there with the family "rock hounding. My dad was also a huge fan of visiting hot springs 😁

I was out last week along our tracks near Amboy snd followed an old railroad grade from the 1880s. I noticed a wooden structure under the old railbed which I thought was a drainage culvert. On closer inspection it turned out to be a hidden Chinese railroad worker shelter. The small entrance led into a large wood lined room. Outside there were numerous rice bowl fragments and 1880s refuse strewn around the historic feature. Being a previous professional archaeologist I will have to return and document the site
Hi Sarah! The Kerr-McGee hardhat you found was from the Kerr-McGee chemical company that at one time owned the Trona chemical corporation. There have been many owners over the years, and they had it for quite a while. The company is now called Searles Valley minerals. When Kerr-McGee owned it they were very generous to the surrounding communities, and you will still find many things named after them. It’s very possible that the helmet belong to one of the Manson family people, as some of them did work there. After all, they still have to eat.
Funny Huss, you mentioned "garbage dump" a couple times at the end..Well for all you Manson family fanboys and girls who do not know this little trippy tidbit of MF trivia. So if you never heard it, check it out fanboys & girls.. I live in the South end of Owens Valley and was living there in Lone Pine '68 & '69.When the Manson family found their way up here. They lived or were holed up in a small cave/rock shelter up in the Alabama Hills for short while, Girls could be seen on occasion dumpster diving behind a couple fruit bearing cafe's & restraunts in town as well as rummaging in the dumpster behind the grocery store. After the round-up of those killer hippies from hell at the Barker Ranch, all of Manson's vehicles including the infamous Flying Bus , his 2 trucks, a couple of dune buggies and an old Rambler Cross Country station wagon were taken to County Line Junkyard near Trona, the buggies were sold early on and trucks were sold or parted out by the late 70's early 80's, but in 1999 or 2000 i was out at County Line looking for some parts for my old truck & Manson's magic bus was still there in the junkyard with all the hippie shit still scattered about inside. I imagine it's been cut up for recycle scrap by now, or some deranged LA fanboy found out about it & bought it. who knows & who really cares? Up until a few years ago there used to be a tour company out of LA called "Manson Family tours" small groups of people would come up here a couple times a year with a guide and visit all the factual and mostly fictional Manson Family hot spots. The Family did leave it's strange sometimes morbid legacy and bare footprint in one form or another in the towns of Olancha, Lone Pine, Independence, Keeler & Darwin as well as Saline Valley. I am not a Manson fanboy by any stretch, i just knew many of the local people involved in the round up & arrest. Ziploc bags became a thing in 1968 so it is very likely those could be from the late 60s. Also the barrel of clothes makes sense because the Manson family would have piles of “community clothing” so that could very well have been one of those in that barrel
Hi Sarah, The Kerr Mcgee company had a large plant in Trona, CA where they mined chemicals from the dry lake bed there. A lot of the workers lived in Ridgecrest and drove the road there & back each day - they would buy bottles of beer and drink them on the drive home, tossing them out the window when done. The sides of the road were covered with broken glass.

There's no reason not to be a fan and I'm sure God loves you just the way you are and is even proud of you with your bold adventurous spirit. You've become an expert at audio and video production/ editing as well. Yes, I remember trying malt liquor...didn't care much for it. There were a couple of breweries that went out of business back in the 80s and 90s..because the old brew masters retired or were run off. Seems the younger folk thought they had a better idea, but the consumers complained of headaches, and poor tastes and other discontent...and sales fell off. Turns out that natural ingredients and natural processes work much better than chemistry stunts. Never can tell about the Manson Mob. They very well could have set that tunnel up as a hideout. If they didn't, it's only because they never had the time. Any supplies that were good in there were probably packed off decades ago by others who found the place, Still, it was a great explore. Thanks for the tour, Love. Much appreciated.
Wow!! That was crazy good!! But so scared you’d be stuck in there for a long time! Or that it would cave in!!! Yikes!!! And finding the book from 2010… Crazy!!! Good find! Great Bravery!! Bravo!!
Nice explore!!!!........About 40 years ago, I worked with a man from the LA area, he told me he and his kids used to go motorcycle riding in the desert. He never saw them, but there was a story he was told by other people that if you went far enough out in the desert, you might see naked girls running around. He suspected that was some of the Manson family!!!!....I am also fascinated by the "family"!!!!
Kerr McGee was where Karen Silkwood worked. Cher played her in a movie called Silkwood. Kerr does various things but one of them was working with radioactive material for the Gov.
We had a lot of radio active waste scattered all over around DuPage Country and surrounding area back in the 70s, 80s and 90a. I lived in that area (south west suburbs of Chicago) from 1972 until 2006. Kerr McGee painted radium on clock, watch and instrument faces during WW 2.
Wow, you never know what you find in there huh! That hardhat was from Kerr Mcgee, an oil company here in Oklahoma that became famous when a labor union activist named Karen Silkwood was on her way to a meeting to discuss things she had found out about the company, she never made it and was found in a single car accident dead! There was a movie done about it also. And the song Helter Skelter was a Beatles song from the white album i believe, Manson was a fan, you were singing the American Pie song, which did reference the act, in which they scrawled Helter skelter on the walls in blood! Thanks and keep up the great work girl!
Kerr McGee also had mines. Silk wood involved a uranium mine. Kerr McGee also owned a coal mine in Wyoming in the 70s and 80s. The coal mine still exists, but Kerr McGee sold it years ago.
Thank you for the video. Bar Codes were first used 1973, by then most of the family were already tried and in prison. It may be that the site was reoccupied by a hermit or stocked as a shelter.
I looked in anticipation for this one. Cool a nuclear fallout shelter from the 1960s with old supplies. Looks you came prepared! Why do people always drop trash! Wow that is a small creepy entrance! You certainly will always the brave adventurous person!! Good thing you are petite to get down into the shaft. Yes go back as far as you can and show us. A lot of interesting things and lots of cobwebs. Actually ziplock bags been around since 1950s with original closure invented in 1951. The clothes you found definitely interesting! I remember having an old corduroy jacket when I was in high school. Looks like there was a party with all the Geer cans. Wow that old locker was far into there wasn't it. Amazing you got the end. I remember Sclitz 😂. Wow an old log book with last entry in 2019 until you wrote int I it. Helter Skelter was associated with Manson.
WOW SARAH! You should be very proud of yourself! 100 percent Bravery! Thank you so much 💓 for Everything 😊 God Bless! You ❤️ always. Sincerely your friend William O
Love your vids, woman! love adventure and exploring myself, but, haven't been able to do much of any for years. Hey, working on those circumstances! stay safe and be well!
According to a search, ziplock bags got their patent back in 1968, but they really weren't on the market until the early 1970s. They must have been expensive early on, because I don't remember them in our household until the late 70s. I always remember the sandwich bags with twist ties from my youth. Not that I am old at 55. Ha! Another fun video! Thank you, Sarah!
I love how the Uggs are the preferred exploration footwear ! You hit the jackpot on that one. I’ll bet it was a Manson hideout.. Kerr McGee ( from the helmet ) was once the operator of the Soda mine in Trona back in the heyday before it sold several times ..
I remember my logging day's and when you were stuck out in the woods and had to go, sometimes you had sacrifice a shirt sleeve. I could not help laughing when you were digging through the clothing.
Went there today with a couple granddaughters. They really liked it. It has to be one of the least visited spots in DVNP. Only one entry in the logbook after Sarah's and before ours.
Yes, good thing you're petite to get through that opening. I'd end up looking like that drawing of Winnie the Pooh stuck in the hole. A mask probably wouldn't have hurt considering all the stuff floating in the air that the camera lite showed. Anyhoo...you're an intrepid adventurer and so glad you took us along. Happy Trails.
I agree with Kerry J., I am 66 and there weren't any Ziploc bags. I don't think I could go down there, so I am glad you are more adventures then me. I just don't see how there got all the barrels and storage cabinets down there, unless the opening was bigger at one time.
Pretty creepy hidey hole. Can't imagine what goings on went on in there. Wonder if old Charlie's ghost haunts those digs. Hopefully, wherever he might be haunting these days, it's about 2,000 degrees hotter.
A tough Independent Gal :) This video reminds me of when we kids used to camp in an old mine at Johannesburg near Randsburg. The one we camped in went through the hill so had two entrances. Larger tunnels with mine cart rails. Freezing winter weather outside and hot dusty rooms down below. One mine near Willow Springs Raceway even had a "pit" with a mummified coyote. I dropped a rock on it and one or two rats came squealing out over its remains. Keep making such interesting videos!
WonderHussy, you are an inspiration to so many. Cojones of Chuck Norris and the gentleness of a beautiful princess. This was an awesome adventure. Thank you and namaste, or perhaps in this Manson hole, namasty
All the lockers and barrels had to have been brought in before the entrance was narrowed since they are bigger then 2x2 foot opening. Any history of mining in the area?
Very strange findings you came across. Tame, but odd. Seems like it was a storage facility. Not Shelter. I've done my fair of exploring in strange holes in far out places. Indiscriminately sometimes. Aroma Can kill, or at least soften, my enthusiasm to dive in. Could be the high humidity on the East Coast that contributes to that. I am grateful for the experiences I have had in the desert in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Colorado. Could be the low humidity prevents a lot of rot. Thank you for Persevering
I can’t believe you went down in there the minute I would’ve seen all the spider cobwebs early I would’ve had to get a torch and burn them all the way before able to climb down in there thank you for going down there while it was very interesting what do you do some scary stuff sometimes don’t get hurt don’t want nothing to happen to our wonder Hussey we love our Hussey thank you from the old retired guy I love Wednesdays👍👨🏻🦳👍

The sides of the road were covered with broken glass.
please don't litter
$1000 California fine
That was a great adventure. Thank you Sarah for taking us along with you. And no cobwebs here!
Sarah as always another excellent video and I’am glad to see your gorgeous smile 😀 and your knowledge of your adventure ❤️❤️❤️
I Like this video!
I like ❤️ part she putting on old dirty underwear she found funny ?
It is amazing the amount of stuff in such a remote area.
You've got some big stones, lady! to BOLDLY go where few have gone . . .
Thanks for the trip lady. See you down the trail.
I have a ton respect for you, Wonderhussy. You have a touch of superwoman as you work thru situations and you have a tender heart with the tortoise and animals. There's no reason not to be a fan and I'm sure God loves you just the way you are and is even proud of you with your bold adventurous spirit. You've become an expert at audio and video production/ editing as well. Dig the singing when it spontaneously bubbles up from your heart.
A mechanically disinclined superwoman. In fact, in-depth knowledge of most subjects is beyond her grasp.
Yes, I remember trying malt liquor...didn't care much for it. There were a couple of breweries that went out of business back in the 80s and 90s..because the old brew masters
retired or were run off.
Any supplies that were good
in there were probably packed off decades ago by others who found the place, Still, it was a great explore. Thanks for the tour, Love. Much appreciated.
I like your videos. Thanks, you are way better than TV!
Wow!! That was crazy good!! But so scared you’d be stuck in there for a long time! Or that it would cave in!!! Yikes!!! And finding the book from 2010… Crazy!!! Good find! Great Bravery!! Bravo!!
You are a very extraordinary woman Wonderhussey. Thanks for giving us tours of these neat places.
Thank you W.H. for doing what you do, please keep cranking out the good times!
Meryl Streep played the title role, not Cher.
Cher played Karen's roommate in the movie.
Large international company.
I live right across the street from Kerr Mcgee lol born and raised in good old Hendertucky lol
We had a lot of radio active waste scattered all over around DuPage Country and surrounding area back in the 70s, 80s and 90a. I lived in that area (south west suburbs of
Chicago) from 1972 until 2006. Kerr McGee painted radium on clock, watch and instrument faces during WW 2.
You are soooo courageous. No way would I crawl through all those cobwebs. Love your channel.
God bless you Wonderhussy, stay safe!
You are an exact younger clone version of my oldest sister! You even sound exactly like her! She does what you do too! Mind blown 🤯
Love it. Wonderhussy you got bigger 🏀⚽️ than most! Thank you for bringing us along ✌💜
Thanks for taking me along hussy oh, that was great 😎👍
Wow, you never know what you find in there huh!
Well, maybe not uranium, but something radioactive.
@@DaniLeia3 yes it was something radioactive , im thinking it was plutonium and she was infected, no , contaminated with it. Thanks
Kerr McGee also mined salt minerals from the brines at Searles Lake near Trona.
There was also a KerrMcGee facility in Henderson in the Las Vegas Valley.
You sure are dedicated, thanks for showing it all…
Thank you for the video.
Helter Skelter was associated with Manson.
love your videos wonderhussy . love from Norway
Ziploc bags were first introduced in 1968. I'm 73 and remember using them while in college between 67 and 72
If you want to know about Kerr McGee, watch the movie Silkwood.
Wow WH you have Brass Balls!! Not afraid of anything! Love your channel.. 💖
You find the most awesome places to explore
Those pities in the shaft were for air and water for operating rock drills
Love your videos and you’re a really bad ass!!!😍
That old rusty vehicle has very, very rare Westinghouse air suspension. How those are still there amazes me. $$$
Thanks, Wonderhussy, I really didn't want to go down there . . Lol 😆
You almost lost me at the skidmarked undies.😵💫. But I soldiered on to the end of the video out of respect for you. ✨
looked like period blood to me not gonna scare a chick off
Good exploration video; wouldn’t catch me in there;thanks for the tag along 😎😎👍😎👍👍😎😎😎😎👍👍
I love how the Uggs are the preferred exploration footwear !
You hit the jackpot on that one. I’ll bet it was a Manson hideout..
Kerr McGee ( from the helmet ) was once the operator of the Soda mine in Trona back in the heyday before it sold several times ..
Kerr McGee had a place in Vegas.
A Towelie reference "Don't forget to bring a towel." on 420. Well Done.
Amazing exploration!! I love this kind of adventure!! Thank you for sharing!
I worked at a gas station in high school in the 70's, the station was called Trackside and it was owned by Kerr Mcgee.
And if that's the only opening to that cave I sure would like to know how they got that big piece of plywood down there
Maybe the plywood was put in before the entrance was concreted into the square entrance hole.
Plywood was the original entrance before someone changed it to concrete
Bigger ones than mine my dear, thank God that you're safe and ready for the next adventure.-- A true fan
I just want to bing watch you! I’d love to explore with you! Looks like fun. Your one fun lady WH thank you for sharing
Love your Content !! thank you for always providing us with entertainment
wow, that was an awesome adventure...keep up the great work!
One of the best adventures ever, and you've had a lot of great ones. Disappointed we didn't get to watch the cleanup process. 🤣
I agree with Kerry J., I am 66 and there weren't any Ziploc bags. I don't think I could go down there, so I am glad you are more adventures then me. I just don't see how there got all the barrels and storage cabinets down there, unless the opening was bigger at one time.
You're freaking me out kid. Don't do that any more. Very dangerous. I worked in the mines for 17 years and I wouldn't go in there. Good video though.
Why ?
they had their dope in the baggies. I remember the Shlitz malt liquor from my high school days in Ridgecrest mid 70's
YES! I remember using some of that shampoo in the 70s when I was a teenager! Weird.
I can’t believe you went down in there the minute I would’ve seen all the spider cobwebs early I would’ve had to get a torch and burn them all the way before able to climb down in there thank you for going down there while it was very interesting what do you do some scary stuff sometimes don’t get hurt don’t want nothing to happen to our wonder Hussey we love our Hussey
thank you from the old retired guy I love Wednesdays👍👨🏻🦳👍
My wife always resented me watching your vids. Buy now she is fan or yours. Kerr/McGee 1929-2006 signs were all over Oklahoma and Texas. Thanks for showing us around. You have more _____s (fill in the blank) than I do. Be careful!
