Not a huge fan of the sculpted head considering I'm a cuddlebug with plushies, but I could definitely see modifying it to be a plush head, or at least overlaying material on top of the foam. It definitely helps pull off that gaping mouth look though.
Yeah you can definitely modify it a bit to your liking, at least she tried to make it a little more fluffy though with the materials

Tbh you could probably still make it cuddly by using a block of softer foam instead of styrofoam (maybe like memory foam), drawing a template of the head on it to cut the foam down to shape and covering it up with a sewing pattern using the same fabric as the body. I used to be interested in fursuit making when i was in middle school and the tutorials used the exact same technique. Granted you may still need some kind of structural support, but it won't be as crunchy
Definitely, maybe sculpting the mouth basic structure with foam and then layer it with stuffing and then sew the fabric on it
Typically, with modeling plushies, especially ones like the smiling critters, having a base like this is necessary to keep the structure
Granted, the foam in this isn’t the BEST choice, but getting the “good stuff” can be pricey and difficult to shape if you don’t have the right equipment 😊

catnap has a purple tip at the end of the tail, you could have also made it produce its lavender gas/sleeping gas by using a spray bottle and with something to pull the trigger of the spray bottle, for the gas you can use colored perfume or real lavender gas for the smell, using the metal that the tail has and the stretchiness of the fabric, you can pull the tail to pull the trigger that the spray bottle has, the metal is gonna be inside the body as the spray bottle can lead to the mouth as the hole is covered by where the gas comes from in game or that speaker looking thing from old toys, although it makes catnap less squishier it can also calm you down and adding a bit of function, you can also hide led lights in the eyes (white) and a switch behind the zipper to turn it on, in the foam, you can put those watch batteries or 2 AA/AAA batteries with a place to store them, the led lights (white) go in the eyes behind the curved plastic and using the foam you can hide the wires, the "clay" (black) behind the half ball of clear plastic will have a hole to keep the led lights (White), maybe add a speaker with a meow audio in it once a small button on the head is pressed, to not break the head use a sensitive button, the speaker is gonna be in the chest (behind) but there is gonna be no holes in the cloth, the cloth might make the sound weak so use a extremely strong small 1 inch speaker to hear it better, that's all the recommendations I have, hope you like it!
This is perfect for someone who doesn't really want to spend a lot money, although I do think the material may cost more, I haven't really checked, either way! This is a good video and tutorial! I'll definitely be making this one!

I don't think you're pushing the face right on the official plush. If you do it right it looks 10 times better and in person, it's a better push. The plush that was in the VHS recall video cost like $100 to make and if you don't like the official one just make your own. Although you're missing out lol. Or you're just probably mad you didn't get it🤣.

I used Styrofoam because I couldn't find the foam, just one question where did you buy the foam?😊
I had it at home, it was from some boxes where I received some products and the foam is what protected the products. If you don't want the head to be hard you can also use sponge or 'squishy' Foam (upholstery).
