Hey Mike, good footage! Where do you get the block shield plates that cover the pistons and the guide tools to do this? What size drill and tap are you using to make the repair? May have to do this someday, but until then, take a look at my video of our Cadillac and tell me what you think!
I worked for 2 Cad dealers for 38 years. Heavy eng. work the entire time. It's amazing what you can get used too. 178 N-stars out of the car for 1 or more reasons. Overheat one of these and the headbolts pull out the threads in the block. I used to time sert the entire block for an effective repair. Eng. out, up on the stand and go for it! Special tools and know how got ';er done. I despise N-stars!!
This is all fine and great, but how did you get to the rear bank with the engine still in the car? You're gonna need to drop some of the cradle and tilt it forward.
When doing this remember to use Tap Magic Fluid when tapping each hole that was just drilled out....I used pb blaster when I was drilling the head bolt hole.
how can I get around spending 450 some dollars for this time circuit can I just buy the drill bit and the inserts and the tap I can't see spending all that money especially since I don't have it any suggestions
Hey guy's I had purchased a 01 STS w/o keys took it the dealer had the keys made and programme, the didnt starts after that so I changed the fuel pump and now it starts and run for only 10-15 sec and cuts off any idea on what could be causing this problem?
Yeah... They might be, but my car HAS a Northstar and it would be less expenzive and less of a headache to replace the engine with head studs. And I didnt check the numbers but those engines are not rated at 275hp.
There are guys doing this witbout pulling the engine, they roll the engine forward. It seems you would have to take drive shafts out to move it far enough forward to stud rear head. The Huhn repair system seems to be the best of the repair systems Ive seen. Also the Carroll Custom Cadillac studs look good too. Carrol's system taps the block to five eights NC. Five eights is what Cadillac should have used in tbe first place, and all these failures could have been avoided. My Eldorado gets twenty eight mpg on hiway, runs stong and quiet, I like em, but the head jobs is going to be a major PITA.
+Jr plz I have read, but cannot be sure, that the ARP studs for 4.6 Ford work in the Northstar. Check it out before ordering first. Yeah, some of these stud kits are extremely overpriced.
my 2000 deville was overheating cuz of blown head gasket on the front bank. I pulled the head off and guess what I found. The work in this video had already been done. just finished today. cranked it up and its fine thk God. HG must have been damaged or something.
My uncle just attempted this on a good engine but we pulled it out. We used the Northstar performance head studs and they were crap, we drilled it for them and the block is useless. He torqued them to specs and one snapped and the others stretched so when you remove the bolts they do not run up and down the threads nicely. The company that sold them will not even send us a new set, wasted $550 and ruined the block. O'well start over with another one.
Want a great alternative? Either Get a 4.9L V8 Engine or move to Pontiac's 3.8L V6 SC. Either of these engines are more reliable and deliver similar if not more power. Fuck the Northstar it was junk and wasn't even designed the way it should of been.

Sounds like you already know exactly what he had to do. Why ask? Lmao
When doing this remember to use Tap Magic Fluid when tapping each hole that was just drilled out....I used pb blaster when I was drilling the head bolt hole.
so basically your drilling the old thread out and tapping a larger diameter thread to go with new bolts or screws? and is that the rocker covers?
My question is he is doing the front, how did he do the back heads? That would be a little tight don't you think?
From my experience, it's always a little tighter in the rear.
If you put in bigger bolts will they fit though the bolt holes in the heads or do you have to drill them out to.

im working on one now i did the same way he did but where did you get the aluminum blocks
i have 1996 cadillac with northstar. haveing trouble with windonshield wipers and fan working right
I'd like to know how you got the heads off with the engine in car, how did you get past the timing chains?
did u have to remove radiator? how hard is it too get it broke down like you have it.....i need change head gasket

good video but maybe tap on exhaust might be a good step he seems to miss.

My 4.9 gets 28 on the hwy too. So whats your point on the mpg? I get from mid ohio to the jersey shore & still have 2 gallons of fuel in the tank.
take the windshield out

WAS THAT IN THE CAR OR OUT OF THE CAR WHAT DID THE PARTS RUN YOU ???
Congrats mikelawson, you did way better tham the guys from Carfix Show. By the way how much would cost a service like this and how long it takes?

where did you buy the tool?
Indeed that is the starter. Its isn't that hard to change.. Just time consuming to do so.
All yr debris going right into manifold openings .wow they are still gonna pull out need to do a full head job on bolts .they have galvanic corrosion
how much does this cost?

Nice, but you won't be doing bank #1 in the vehicle! The engine has to be removed which is about 20 hours labor!

Still gonna have the same problem, you still using steel bolts in an aluminum block :(
this was very helpful...
Why go thru the hassle of doing in car. I can have the subframe on jackstands and the engine stripped down to the block in 3 hours.
Like to see that
Sure you can.
Just contact Northstar Performance and get one of their head stud kits.
Damn that's crazy.
Who sabotaged the threads in the first place?
Or was it just defective?
that job is a real pain for any mechanic to do, this tech must be very experienced to feel comfortable taking on this job. aka: not a Dumb Fu3k!
If the block has bad casting time sert won t work junk
💯
