    TH-cam recommended me this video. I like toki pona, I rarely watch stuff about VR chat. Learning toki pona with people in VR sounds so interesting and fun! I gotta say, the variety of the avatars is staggering. The blue harpy-looking one and the black and white lizard are some highlights in my mind.

    5 years ago now I learned my first language in VR chat and oddly enough there wasn't a community around like this for toki pona at the time. I had at the time been using Memrise to learn all the words in Toki Pona but I've gotten a bit rusty over time I will admit. In the other language I learned (which was British Sign Language) I got to the point I was conversational in it - which is far further than any other language I've ever tried to learn. I will have to have a look at this community because, if my crippling anxiety lets me, it may be able to give me that jump towards conversationalsim that I was unable to achieve through self study

    A neat video and I can tell there's plenty of passion, but I had definitely hoped to hear more actual dialogue/examples of a conversation with it as someone completely out of the loop

    • @taffy413
      @taffy413 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      toki pona isn't well suited for machine translation, due to its heavy reliance on context and its built-in ambiguity! on the one hand, it gives it a very human edge to it; on the other hand, it's not particularly convenient :(

    Haven't any of you read George Orwell? In the book 1984, George Orwell shows us a world where language is being intentionally simplified and minimalized as a tool to stunt and debilitate human potential. And here you all are, clamoring for it? Really.

      Again that's newspeak that's not what toki pona is However, Toki Pona comes from a completely different starting point and the resemblance to Newspeak is only superficial The purpose of Toki Pona Toki pona, unlike Newspeak, does not try to displace any language Toki pona, unlike Newspeak, does not try to displace any language, but only adds new possibilities of expression. Learning and speaking Toki Pona is voluntary, not forced this Isn't what toki pona does and btw The purpose of Toki Pona is not to prevent free-thinking or a tool to deliberate or human potential it's a Constructed language combining elements of the subgenres personal language and philosophical language what you said isn't the purpose of Toki Pona you got it all wrong.

      Toki Pona allows people to express words however they want unlike Newspeak, for example Newspeak would make you say “joycamp” instead of labor camp while Toki Pona would let you use different connotations like “must-work-land” or “must-dig-hole-land” or any other combination you feel like.
