I think I would make a baseboard of hardware cloth to cover up those potential mice holes. That way you would be keeping the ventilation if you ever needed it again, but you would be disallowing mouse entry. You could even do a wooden baseboard on top of that, except leaving those holes open. Just go right up to the holes on either side.
Time Life book handy man/ upholstery/ furniture/ automotive series for the win. We learned so much from them. Now you can't find them in any library. 😢
Since you guys are DIY people, I would tell you that stop using crimping style butt connectors. I use lever nuts instead and they are such a time saver and easier to use or re-use. You'll love them. I also did a recent video on how to make them waterproof with just a small lidded plastic bottle. If interested, just search on the phrase "weatherproofing lever nuts".
I moved off grid too make improvments too my personal self.. Like stop a 60yr tobbaco addiction, but that didnt happen with all the calamities I soon aquired after four years of struggle. The only thing I've lost, was time, money, family, and sanity.
For sceptic maintenance I recommend a monthly treatment of box of baking soda, 2 cups vinegar, package of dry active dry yeast tablespoon of dawn dishsoap. In this order then run the hottest boiling water down the drains.
oh my, lots of learning. Yes, winter shut down and draining of water heaters and all things plumbing is essential if you're not going to be around for any length of time. My Dad had a huge list on winterizing his cabin near Estes Park anytime you used it between Sept and May. A pain, and it worked. Glad you got the showers!
We live off grid also. We keep the water pump inboard in the trailer so it doesn't freeze. All our appliances are indoors where there's heat. In the winter if it freezes we even bring in a fifteen gallon water tank and pump water from there. Nothing outdoors is safe from freezing. Even in Florida it gets down to the twenties at night.💫
Geez! That sure makes any problems I have seem trivial. And, it keeps you from getting bored. Being problem solvers saves the day when such things happen. Imagine what it would have cost you to hire that done.
On the subject of desert rodents, many plastic materials from China are rodent food. Many tubes, wire insulation, and other items are made from a soy oil plastic. Those plastics smell like food to rodents and actually have food value. And, soy hose susceptible to gasoline, WD40, and other petroleum products. Rats, mice, and squirrels will gnaw through wood to get to soy plastics. In general, soy plastic is very shinny and has an oily feeling.
I actually expected this to happen from a few videos ago when you said the lines froze. expect some of your water lines and connections to Bad as well. anytime you leave for any significate time, you should blow out your water system with Air at the very least. super easy to do. you could set up your water system to do this easily.
We’ve had flooding in our house due to high rains in California, and we managed to avoid mold and mildew so far. Good luck to you. You have a real pioneer spirit!
To remove the plug in a hole saw just unlock the back if it has one and spin the cup off of the mandrel while still on the drill. Then use the guide bit to bump the wood plug out of the hole saw cup, much faster. If you have a fan, run that and the water will dry up in no time or open the doors and windows. No need to start removing anything. Great channel!
Once had freezing pipes in my home having not left the central heating on low whilst on holiday. Learned from that mistake but experienced another flood just over 3 years ago. My wet room has a small bilge type pump to drain away the waste water from the shower. The type of pump installed is very low cost and consequently an internal valve will fail very 1-2 years. So my whole flat was flooded as I had not even moved into the house and never seen such an arrangement before. Tending to be taking my showers at the Gym currently where they have an expensive plant room to handle all the waste water.
I was reading through your comments and came across one that Shannon is expecting. How will you accommodate the new baby in such a small place? Congratulations! I'm looking forward to this new journey.
I used to have a place in the mountains and paid a thief to winterize when I left he didn't so I know how it feels to come back to that mess. So happy you worked together and now its all fixe again. Happy hot showers!
Did you save the drilled out plugs to glue back in? So draining the pipes and leaving the taps open is not an option with an off grid system? Or putting a pipe heating system in? Interested to see what the solution is. And does insurance cover the equipment damage?
What a fantastic video - I was pulling for you guys all week here in west side of Albuquerque- weather is finally getting better and now we are can do more outside house cleaning - Marty
I always wondered what a tankless water heater was as I have heard about over there in the USA, over here they are just called instant hot water heaters like if you turn on the hot water tap the burner kicks in and goes off when turned off. Better than a storage unit in a way, especially if you dont use hot water all the time.
Where we are in Southern California, the water is so loaded up with minerals, I wonder how an insta-heater would handle the build up? The big tanks have to be drained and treated, but a lot of people just ignore that and buy a new one every few years. 😑
In UK we cayenne pepper rodent repellent easy thing to make it's not lethal. Just grind the pepper into a powder make sure you get non in your eyes wear safety equimpent , sprinkle powder on wires or places you don't want rodent.
Cayenne pepper does not work as well in the desert Southwest. The issue is the rodents live among and feed on very strong smelling vegetation including very spicy strong smelling junipers trees and juniper berries. There is also very strong smelling sage brush and many other aromatic oil plants. They do not mind munching on cayenne snacks. They are not deterred by lavender oils, eucalyptus etc. maybe it works on citified rodents but the smells and taste definitely does not put off the high desert rodents as it is part of their natural habitat.
What model Rennai are you installing and what is the power draw?! My Onsen hot water on demand just bit the dust in my tiny house in Canada, no hot shower for now either. Always enjoy watching your journey!
It's nice to see that you two are not neat-niks. Most of these off-grid videos show everything so perfect, and organized to the hilt that falsely makes living away from civilization look easy, but it is not easy. It takes work to acclimate, and build structures that will keep you warm, cool, and safe. Your video shows reality, not fantasy.
The one thing I have realized once I started watching 'alternative' living channels (that I guess I didn't know or think about) is there are a lot of people in our country not showering on a regular basis 😃 to each their own I guess, if you have someone living with ya and you both smell, I GUESS it's ok. 🤔
Tiny houses are way more expensive than small mobile homes with the same square footage. Why did you choose tiny home over a trailer. Way cheaper than tiny houses.
Life,,,, is tough, but temporary as well. Everything is temporary. Including HELL! Not sure if upper class feels it like the rest of us but,,, good thing they'er existence is also temporary!
Watching your videos always reminds me of all the things I take for granted without giving them a second thought each day. You both handle these crises way better than I would although we didn't get to see the initial reaction when you first encountered the Great Flood of 2023! 🚰🌊🌊🌊🚰🤣
Shannon getting after that electric! a true badass
Bummer. Always something but nothing better than a hot shower. Good job
Congrats on the shower I KNOW that had to feel good for sure😁

Ever wonder how our DIY projects went before TH-cam? Lol we had to go to a place called a Library
Time Life book handy man/ upholstery/ furniture/ automotive series for the win. We learned so much from them. Now you can't find them in any library. 😢
The humor and suspense was great....glad you finally got a hot shower.
Thanks for being open about the challenges you’re facing! It will help many of us.
Wishing you 🍀🍀🍀🍀!
Your realistic content is why I've been a supporter for so long! Thank you! and Here's to many more good hot showers for years to come!
Living in NM before winter 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶 winterize like a rv and buy the pink gallon of winterize from Walmart in auto section

That's what I'm curious about. Is it the type of system, closed as it is?
It was so nice of you to make all those little mouse holes and homes for all the little critters that will now live under the cabinets
well hopefully lesson learned... drain water off system unless you plan to keep it frost free during winter... else it gets expensive and bothersome

Nice of you to make all those little round mousey doors under the cabinets😂❤!

home ownership is always a challenge!
Even though that was not a good thing y'all worked well together and got the job done. Wow what great results a clean shower.

Might be good to get a solar water heater.
Is it an "off grid living fail" or a "leaving property vacant and untended for months fail"? Good thing you all are young and resilient.
Hopefully your laminate floor will not swell from the water.
No more Leaks, Hot Shower!!! Yee Haw😊😊
I was reading through your comments and came across one that Shannon is expecting. How will you accommodate the new baby in such a small place? Congratulations! I'm looking forward to this new journey.
You don't have a shop-vac??
Oh my goodness! Congratulations on the job well done!!! 😊
That happened to me in a cabin up in Alaska, drilled a drain hole at the low spot of the floor , fixed the problem.
It's good you live in a dry climate, in Louisiana you might get mold.
new to your channel and it was fun to watch young folks learning the ropes of off grid life take care and have a wonderful day
Y'all are really doing it! Love to see how well you two work through a disaster together.
I used to have a place in the mountains and paid a thief to winterize when I left he didn't so I know how it feels to come back to that mess. So happy you worked together and now its all fixe again. Happy hot showers!
Perhaps outside solar bag shower from Joolca might be for backups
Wow! So sorry to see you had to go through that.
Did you save the drilled out plugs to glue back in? So draining the pipes and leaving the taps open is not an option with an off grid system? Or putting a pipe heating system in? Interested to see what the solution is. And does insurance cover the equipment damage?
Awesome job
New to watching! You both make a great team! Look forward to your new adventures with off-grid life! 😘🥰
Cool, drilling little mouse house
What a fantastic video - I was pulling for you guys all week here in west side of Albuquerque- weather is finally getting
better and now we are can do more outside house cleaning - Marty
I put a drain down on all my water pipes so when I leave I drain my system and put antifreeze in my pee traps and toilet when I leave in winter
7:42 I think you were wrapping that tape in the wrong direction....?🙄
You live and learn
Awesome video

How many acres do you own? How much did it cost? Why do you have a tiny house and a cabin?
We have used a bucket with a tap in the bottom for a reliable shower for decades when various pumps and pipes were less than watertight…
That sucks!
What model Rennai are you installing and what is the power draw?! My Onsen hot water on demand just bit the dust in my tiny house in Canada, no hot shower for now either. Always enjoy watching your journey!
It's great 👍 to see you get a hot 🔥 shower 🚿 finally. Way to go.
Dehumidifier works well
The power draw would be way too high on their electric system.
Just installed the same rinal hot water heater...
Can I tell me how to turn up temp?
I'm sure I saw u doing that.
Help please, 120 not hot enough.
That water pump. If it’s 120v. The splices should be in a box.
It's just temporary, unless it works.
Haha indeed
The S T R U G G L E is real ✌️
I luv this 🤭
Where does the water come from? Well?
Rainwater catchment and delivery services
🎉🎉🎉🎉 Yeahhhhhh 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Bonus. You now have a multi family dwelling unit for mice !!

You must have not watched until the end and they've talked about it many times, they use Planet fitness showers and portable shower bags.
For Millenia people have been getting by without having the luxury of hot water being showered over their heads and bodies to keep clean😉
Wouldn't you rather be surfing , some glassy swell !
Woohoo for hot showers! Congrats

If it floods again, the water will get in those holes and destroy the wood under the cabinet much worse than you just experienced.
