    My wife Ronnie nee McCabe of "The Stag's Head" Fermanagh Street and myself very much enjoyed the selection of photos old and new of Clones, which brought back memories of days gone-by and updated our take on Clones, many thanks, Enda.

      Hugh Morrison Thanks very much Hugh and give my best regards to Ronnie. I remember our school days very well. It’s not that long ago, and we’re still only spring chickens! I’m thrilled that people are enjoying the videos. Clones is a lovely wee town with a great community of people, and these videos were a labour of love. Thanks again.

    What a lovely video, very well produced, I love seeking out footage of Ireland and great videos like this pop up from time to time. My cousin lives in Clones and I visit her when I'm on holiday in Ireland. I think it's a lovely town. I remember my mum taking me to a Fleadh Cheol in Clones in the 1960's when I was about 6 or 7 years old, it was a great adventure for me going there on the bus from Cavan town, Not long after that I came to live in England but will never forget that happy experience 💚

      Thanks very much for the lovely compliment. I'm very happy you enjoyed the video and that it brought some nice memories for you. Thanks for sharing those. Clones is a great little community still and with the finest of people - even if I say so myself :) I don't know if you have already seen this video of Clones in the 60's. It's a cine film taken my my Dad. th-cam.com/video/jLyXPP7cqlw/w-d-xo.html

    Lived in Clones from 1950 to 56.. father worked on GNR.. remember going to Bundoran by train… lived in Lr Abbey St and then O Neill park…

    • @musichead1313
      @musichead1313  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting. The Bundoran Express is always spoken about in affectionate terms. I remember my Father saying that he, along with my uncle watched the last express train leaving Bundoran. The closing of the railway line in October 1957 is often lamented, and indeed it was a colossal loss to the area. Of course we are all slaves to the state of the economy at any given time, but it is still difficult to believe the closure of the GNR was anything other than shortsightedness. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I suppose crystal balls were in short supply at the time.

    First street is Whitehall Street, I believe my great grandma lived there in the 1860s

      That's right Andy, the is Whitehall Street, but it had a name change and is now more commonly known as McCurtain Street. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks, great work! Are there any memorials to John Wesley in Clones? It seems he lived there for a period an established a Methodist church in Clones? Thanks.

    • @musichead1313
      @musichead1313  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much for your comments. Yes indeed John Wesley founded his first church in Cara Street, almost opposite where I used to live. When I was growing up I used to hear this spoken about from time to time, but I don’t believe there was any plaque erected back then. However Clones Historical Society have been very active over the last number of years and this might have changed now. You could make an inquiry to Clones Notice Boards (on Facebook) and they would be happy to respond. Incidentally the Wesley Church was behind the house you can see at around 13 seconds on this video th-cam.com/video/HDV3K4BENZM/w-d-xo.html The property had become a scrapyard during my time living in Clones which was run by the late Pat Grue, who is the gentleman on the right n the photo. I hope this information helps.

    Clones is right on the Border which I know was difficult in the past but hopefully is not so bad now, even with Brexit and all the hoo-ha with that.
    Thank you for the views though-well done of course too.

      Thanks for watching and commenting on the video. The good news is that Clones is going through a renewal at the moment and has received a huge injection of funds to develop the Ulster Canal in the locality. Here is a link www.anglocelt.ie/2022/07/04/e40-million-announced-for-next-phase-of-ulster-canal-project/. Hopefully this will bring about a resurgence in the local economy and beyond.

    Dear Enda, i have come across this and it me reminds me of my Great Aunt Lizzie from clones). Do you have any information with regards to my Family So i can continue to build my family tree please. I Believe she went by the name liz (McKenna?)and grew up to be very old indeed and lived with her brother? Jimmy McKenna. I visited about 30 years ago. All I can remember apart from the Sweet shop the Pub and Cross in town is that it used to be 30 mins walk from town and im sure we went uphill for a bit, maybe a roundabout/pond.....there was no street lighting. It was a long time ago but any information you can give me would be great. kind regards

      Hello James, Thank you for making contact. I’m happy this video brings back memories for you. Clones, as you probably know is a very historic town. As you might expect in a small country like Ireland, each county would carry a preponderance of specific family names and the McKenna family name origin is strongly associated with Co Monaghan. I don’t know if you are on Facebook, but Clones Notice Boards among other things is a fantastic resource for finding out things. If you like (?) I can pass to them a copy of the text of your message and ask them to post it to see if anybody can provide further information as it would be interesting to see what might come back for you.
