  • In this next route learning video we revisit the Wherry Lines add on from Armstrong Powerhouse. We take an Abellio Greater Anglia Class 170 on a morning service from Great Yarmouth to Norwich, calling at Acle and Lingwood along the way.

The river is the Yare and passes the Colman's mustard factory entering Norwich. As you approached Norwich the river was on your right and the navigable cut through Thorpe was on your right, with yachts moored alongside.

The river on the left is the Yare. It does split on the way to Norwich from a place called Postwick, (Pozik), You can see the line of busses at the P&R. I can recommend an excellent pub for good food and real ale, The Rushcutters, on Norwich road. BTW Just as the route comes round the left hand bend at Damgate Wood, approaching Acle, you see a double decker bus pass from right to left. In real life this would be pretty difficult as the bridge has a height restriction on it of 8ft 9in. (Ouch). I live in Acle...
It's a great route and accurate with the two Class 37's with the Mk 3 stock. I can hear them as I sit in my study as they are on the 09.00, 11.00 , 13.00 and 15.00 ex Acle to GY. The supermarket at GY shown in one of the external shots is an Asda.

+Ray Griffiths Thanks for all of the information there Ray. This is a route I've not yet travelled in real life but certainly plan to do so in the future.
I certainly can't imagine an 8ft 9 double decker bus! I'm not sure how road vehicles are set up in Train Simulator. I'm glad that you like this route, I definitely think that quality wise this is one of the best.

Long flat straight stretches of line, overgrown carriage sidings, single track sections and more level crossings than you can shake a stick at - all very familiar to me as I'm constructing the Skegness to Grantham line for Train Simulator. Another excellently presented video, as always.

Great video! I really love the scenery and variety of individual routes here. I can't fault your driving technique this time! 😉 Flawless and expertly driven! In answer to your question: the two small tributaries are part of the River Great Yare, whilst the larger body of water to the left is the Whitlingham Great Broad. Regarding the handling characteristics of the Class 170 on all versions within TS they will hold at about 58mph in Notch 6, provided you haven't exceeded 60-65mph. This includes the E-G 170s as well. The reason for this is in the nature of the transmission. The class 170s are Diesel Hydraulic Multiple Units and are fitted with a two-speed hydraulic transmission. From a stand to about 65mph the train is driven by a torque converter. This multiples the torque output from the engine and accelerates the train to a speed where the engine can drive the train directly without requiring a multiplication of torque. On the older BR units the changeover to the fluid coupling occurs at about 42mph on the Class 158s and 159s and about 46mph on 150s and 156s. When the changeover occurs a distinct change of engine sound can be heard. On the 170s when the train reaches 65mph there is a marked burst of acceleration up to about 75-80mph and this is the train changing from the torque converter to the fluid coupling. The fluid coupling takes the drive directly from the engine and transmits it to the wheels. The train cannot be driven purely by the fluid coupling as the engine would be unable to provide sufficient torque to get the train moving and at low speeds the acceleration would be horrendously slow. Having these two items in the transmission is why the train will hold at different speeds in the same power notch depending on whether it is utilising the torque converter or fluid coupling. For example in the Class 159 whilst on the torque converter notch 5 will hold the train at 40.4mph whilst on the fluid coupling the train will accelerate above 90mph. Similarly with the Class 170 notch 3 will hold the train at 39.3mph under the torque convertor but 77.3mph under the fluid coupling or in Notch 6 either at ~58mph or 98.7mph again depending on which part of the transmission is being used. If you try it with any Diesel Hydraulic MU you will find the same thing. Hope this helps and that I've explained it well. Look forward to your next video, Ben. If you have any other queries about the drive systems of various trains, please feel free to ask me. Regards, Ben 😊

Once the Sheringham lines have joined, it's a river on the right hand side which is part of The Broads which are basically just a bunch of rivers interconnecting in and around Norfolk and Suffolk which were formed by the flooding of peat workings.
