  • Welcome to part 2 of my new weekly series focusing on my favorite snare drums. This unique drum, a 10x14 WFL 3-ply mahogany/poplar from the 1950s, is a very recent acquisition that made it's recording debut shortly after it arrived to my studio. I decided to feature this snare this week, rather than another wood drum I was planning to demo, because it has one of my favorite sounds of all time. It's super-dark, dry, thuddy, punchy, earthy,, meaty...etc.
    I've been recording a lot of singer/songwriter, country, and Americana tracks lately, and this snare has the right vibe for moodier tracks in those genres, when you need something much darker and mysterious-sounding than a typically sized new drum.
    I kept on the heads that the drum came with, which are a Remo Coated Pinstripe batter and an Aquarian Classic Clear bottom. The batter head is tuned medium, and the bottom is tuned very high. The song I was recording is in the key of Ab, so I tuned the fundamental pitch of the drum to the fifth the key (Eb). The wires were kept pretty loose to give the backbeats a bit more rattle and reverb-like sustain.
    So there you have it: a 10x14 WFL 3-ply marching snare...used on drumset.

    I have a 14x10 Tama snare, really struggling to get this "wet" sound that you got here. Need to spend more time on it and mic it to benchmark... Great demo, great playing

    Can you get a snare stand that could be low enough to accommodate this big piece of snare? Oh, and it sounds awesome.

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A few companies make low snare stands. You can also get a Pearl ISS mount to fly the drum off a tom arm.

    Very cool look, very unique sound! Would it be loud enough for a live rock gig in a small club?

      Michael Dawson I heard they used a very deep snare for that record. It was kindly nicknamed “The Terminator.”

      @@MikeDawsonDrums Hey Mike, thanks for the response. I like my snares tuned on the opposite side of the spectrum. High, tight, and cutting. Almost like gospel chops.

    I’m sure you use more muffling tape, than any other demonstrator..🙂

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I present them how I use them on records. Producers/mixers don't like all that ring most of the time.

      Mike Dawson
      It doesn’t demonstrate the true sound of the drum,
      Most drums muffled, sound the same pretty much.

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roy Beckerman fair enough. But I’m demo’ing them as I use them.

    A better throw off than the original? It would be "better" to have the original throw off.Get that piece of crap off that drum and put the original p83 on it and then go ahead and remove all that tape off the head while you're at it.
