What a good life lesson that needs repeating - take a step back & reevaluate. I think this is one of the biggest hurdles for people new to any creative endeavour. When we learn to give ourselves a break, to make a mistake and just move on we find the process so much more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. I know the reminder does me good. :)
I loved the sentiment and the focal point. It came out fine. I'm a big fan of walking away when something isn't working and coming back later. Fresh eyes almost always make the final result much better.
Comforting to know other people make what they consider mistakes too. Think it is a fear we all share - we get so far and then fear if we do anything else we will ruin everything. I didn't mind the scribbling but love what you did in the end to "fix" it. Thanks for sharing your total process - not just what works out the first time.
oh my gosh....I love this page!....and ya even made me tear up, nods and smiles affectionately!..well done Mike! Thank you for sharing with us all, hugs from North Carolin
I really enjoy your videos mike. You're down to earth, quirky and honest. The fact you shared with us your mistake rather than editing it out or not showing it at all is so refreshing. To know (we do know but need reminding) that even the most experienced art journalisers make boo boos is encouraging to us mere mortals starting out tentatively on our journeys, questioning our moves, shall we, shan't we? It's a great save using the brown PITT brush on and the white outline, it makes the focal point pop and the leftover scribble looks like its meant to be now its pushed back and fainter. Lovely seeing you in the garden. Fab video and fab page!
I can't believe I'm watching this 5 YEARS late... I saw Mr. Bentley (he must have been just a puppy back then) and Ian on my side-bar and knew it was going to be good so here I am. Sorry I'm so late, but love this video. I liked it when the black outline was backed out & lightened (after your break), even before the brown, but that helped too. Then, yes, white brought the focal point back into focus. I appreciate the lessons that you taught - we've all made mistakes like this I'm sure. Thank you for sharing.
Great page Mike, its funny isnt it really because i loved the black sketchy lines as they were. Art journalling really is all about personal experience and preference. I think everyone (or at least i do) find faults with our own work. Hugs x
Mike my insides screamed when you started to scribble around your focal point BUT as you said - there is a lesson to be learned and so we did. Thank you and your page did end up looking good ~hugs xx ~janet
Awesome!!! now the black lines look like you intentionally did it for a background to the image. I love it! Thanks for sharing and teaching us how not to give up just because we may not love it!! Have a great day!! {hugs} from Texas..~Dana~
I like what you do, when you do, what you do. I think since I had the focal image, I would have used a second copy as a mask, since there was no serious blending with the background. I would have just re-added the background colors and covered the mistake. But I'm a nerd like that. Whatever you did will bring joy and education and isn't that it's own reward? Cheers Thomas {BFFIA)
Mike ... I’ve just found this (Feb 2020) and loved it. Your “mistake” turned out to be brilliant. It’s so good to return to basic art journaling and see your skills in action. Best to Mr B and Ian. Linda and Grace
Oh how I can empathise with you on this one, I've watched loads of videos where artists have scribbled around their focal images and guess what it's turned out perfectly, but when I've tried it's looked horrible. Was so glad you managed to salvage such a lovely page, you did a perfect job, tfs xo
Thank you for allowing us to come along on your journey. It's brave, and generous. (And the page was very successfully resurrected.) That dark turquoise is lovely. I held my breath as you added the white, thinking: "No!. . . " But the effect is remarkable - something completely new. At least, it's new to me. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you and I'm glad you liked the eventual outcome! Sometimes we have to take risks with our art, it's the only way to push ourselves and learn from our mistakes when we do! XO
Nice save, Mike! Although I didn't think your first version looked "awful," I like the warmth you added to the overall affect with the blended surround and white outline.
I like scribble lines, in my estimation, the adorable photo of you and Bentley is a casual photo. The loose scribble line was not bad for me as it seems it was for you. However, I love what you did to modify it even better. You are so much fun as a TH-cam videographer please be encouraged.
oh wow how old is this , i just saw it come up on side of screen. its soooo dylusions, well you saved it brill, id have panicked and glued pages together lol, the white pen really worked nice too and what a cute pic of ian and baby mr B XX
Awesome save! You did exactly what I was thinking you should've done. Yay! I have to tell you that you helped me *save* one of my pages in my own Dylusions baby art journal with your white gesso technique (it was a page you did with a bird. The first video I watched of yours which caused me to subscribe to your channel, thank you very much). You're such an inspiration :-)
Thanks Mike I thought it was only me who is self critical. I did a canvas for a friend who wanted green and red as the theme. I used lava red cosmic shimmer spray it was pink so I just gave up. You are an inspiration, love your videos. Hugs from Tracy I promise to try again and not just give up.
Great Save Kiddo :) Regardless the Picture is Adorable, that's where my eyes went. I Like that you used an actual Photo and made it Yours...Mistakes I make them all the time...and I am always told there are NO Mistakes in Art and Nana #3 say " BS to that...LOL..." I still make a ton of mistakes when it comes to shadows, Outlines & Text...Know what I do after I yell at myself ? I Always put a light coat of sealer( I use Mod Podge or Deco Page ) over my page before I Outline, shadow or write. Then my Mistakes wipe right off with a Baby Wipe. Love You Big Much XOXOXOXO
I thought the page looked fine with the black lines. Everyone sees things differently, but if you are not happy with your work, it doesn't really matter what others think. I like the 'rescued' end result, the white pen really did make a difference. You should be proud of the result, it's good.
I know this is an older video, Mike, but I just had to come on and tell you I love how it turned out! I know my opinion isn't worth much, But I really think that the shadowing around your focal image looks great! Even with the slight lines visible under it it really makes it pop and the white was perfect! I've learned so much from you Mike and can't thank you enough for your videos! Cheers Marsha
Thank you Marsha, I do think people are frightened to try something different with whatever resources they have..who knows what new or similar effects you can get with what you're hiding in your art drawers!
I actually felt nervous as I was watching the video, waiting for your mistake! At first I thought you should have outlined it in black to cover the black pen, but then realized that Bentley's black markings would have blended right in, making it look worse. I think you did a good job fixing it. No one would even notice the ."mistake" unless you told them about it.
Soooo adorable...thanks for sharing. There you go again doing a piece of art that I love.🌺🍦margy

Excellent thinking - looks so pretty now! And the background is also beautiful. You have such a cute family. Thank you for sharing.
Well I think the page at end is lovely. the white you added saved everything. thanks for sharing this page and this nice picture of Mister B and Ian.
I loved the sentiment and the focal point. It came out fine. I'm a big fan of walking away when something isn't working and coming back later. Fresh eyes almost always make the final result much better.
I love the page. Your sharing of your thought processes makes you my favorite TH-cam mentor.

Brilliant page! Love the background and sweet image of Ian and Bentley.

I think your page is great, I liked it even with the black border around Ian and Bentley...
Thank you for sharing. 😃 👍🏻

It's a great page. Outlining is always one of the toughest decisions to make - I think! The solution you came up with was a good one. TFS :)

I love the background, but the picture and quote are so sweet. Awwww :)

another beautiful page, FULL of love!!!
Thanks for sharing. I am glad that you didn't give up on your page. It turned out nice in the end.

Another thought, there are no mistakes in creativity, just happy accidents.😻😻😻 (don't let Bentley see the cats!)
It's looks great Mike, don't even worry all tho I know the feeling when your not happy with your page. It turned out great!!

I think you made a great recovery. I love the picture!

I think it looks great! I’m new to art journaling and I am really enjoying your videos! Very talented!
I like it with the white boarder.
Love is love this is great thanks🖌
Love it....great save!
I really like the white outline. Just did the baby wipe cleanup myself on a page.
Great save!
I don’t know how I missed this one.. Thanks for the lesson on sticking with a page.
Looks great to me!
You did a great job change it to the much better. I like it alot now.
Thanks Helle XO
I like this very much. True, the sketchy lines didn't do it justice, but you corrected it and it is awesome!
Thanks XO
Nice save.....

Making mistakes is all part of the creative journey we are on!
I actually didn't mind the scribble outline but you did do a good job of disguising it! Hi to Ian and Bentley!
Great save Mike...
great page !!

Yeah, it's funny but when I look back on it now, I was probably over reacting..lol XO

Mike Deakin Gosh, Mike, thanks for taking the time to answer! I know how busy you are!
I liked the black outline, but it's not my journal. I think maybe all you needed to do was add the white outline, that really was a nice addition! TFS
Mike....what kind of pen did you say you used for the smudging. I love it! Great job!
It's a common mistake we all make from time to time is overworking a page. I thought the white outline was an epic save Mike.
I actually felt nervous as I was watching the video, waiting for your mistake! Where do you get the lovely tissue paper from
looks great but it was fine to start with really. There are no right or wrong ways in art journalling. 😊
😉
I may be in the minority but I liked the scribble outline
I think it was good that you made that mistake. The white border made the picture really pop, so I'm going to call it a happy mistake :-)
