    It is so satisfying watching your skill ability and confidence to work on these BMW's. Disheartening the amount of leaks, failures and reliability and how complicated they are to repair!! Also how much must be removed to make a repair is unbelievable. What happened to simplicity, reliability and quality of parts?? I enjoy every video!! Keep making them. A real insight into todays car repairs.

      Complexity comes from the emission regulations manufacturers have to deal with nowadays sad but true makes working on anything so much harder that gets beyond most home mechanics 🤪🤪😖😖

    Love the E90. I bought my daughter an E90. Had a comprehensive service record (previous owner paid a BMW dealership a lot of $$$). It had the oil filter housing gasket leak, overly-stiff power steering, and a rear window that wouldn't lower, and didn't always start immediately. So I low-balled them knowing the repairs would be easy for me. Parts are relatively cheap. A gasket, a window regulator, a new power steering reservoir (built-in filter), some power steering fluid and a new starter and it ran like new. 155k and counting.

    Finally, an E90! I've had one for 12 years and it's a lot of fun, but temperamental like an difficult ex-girlfriend. Yes, 2 of the 3 of the holy trinity of oil leaks in a BMW. Valve cover, oil filter housing gasket and lastly the oil pan gasket. Only the OFHG can be done in a driveway easily. If you see the OFHG leaking, get on that one quickly. If you don't, oil will leak onto those belts and over time, that could lead to a very bad day. The others need patience, prior knowledge and the freedom to drop many f bombs to do. I'm now dealing with a sunroof that won't close, engine mounts, a rear seal and a tailgate that won't open. A Lexus these cars are not. They're also a joy to drive and you can drive them aggressively without losing your license.

    • @ruk2023--

      A few more things to look forward to from my experience....between 120k and 140k you will need a new alternator, starter and water pump. If any of them do actually fail it's a low loader job. My mistake was not doing all three at the same time.
      I had to replace both rear window regulators and in the most unusual problem I had the third rear brake light fell inside the roof liner.
      Still love them though.

    • @bassandtrebleclef
      @bassandtrebleclef ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ruk2023-- yeah, replaced the water pump at around 130k as it was well past it’s useful life. Will keep an eye on the starter and alternator.

    • @ruk2023--
      @ruk2023-- ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bassandtrebleclef So the problem with that approach and I learned this the hard way is that the starter and alternator just failed. They don't need to completely break before the ECU decides the car can't be started so you don't really have any warning sounds. One day I came back to a car that I had left 2 hours earlier and had no signs of trouble with to find it wouldn't start. That happened three times. Once for starter, water pump and alternator and was expensive and time consuming each time.

    Totally agree on the OEM valve cover. When I had my E92 335i, I did the valve cover on that (this one looks easier to do), and change it because the N54 valve covers are known to crack. The aftermarket valve cover I used looked nice and leaked, which kind of defeats the purpose of replacing a valve cover just to have it leak again.

  • @grvl307
    @grvl307 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have an 2006 e92 and it had leaks in all oil gaskets except the valve cover (cause it wasnt a plastic valve cover, but a magnesium one...) - after getting those fixed, the n52 engine has been proven to be very solid. I love the e9x generation of BMW's - quite reliable cars when looked after and 250k miles is pretty doable without major issues!

  • @KeithCramerLongfield
    @KeithCramerLongfield ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting to see an LCI E90 with the N52 engine. By late 2007, non US cars had gone to the dreaded N53 with the direct injection and fuel injectors that BMW cannot supply.

    • @Amogu79
      @Amogu79 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the injectors can be supplied, but they cost around 400-450 EUR/per piece. Also the N53 has other issues, so maybe the N52 isn't the worst idea.

      I know my 2006 Scion xB isn't a BMW by any means, but I can tell you this: the PCV valve is an individually replaceable part that LISTS at $16 for the OEM part and can easily be replaced in less than 15 minutes. Additionally, the valve cover is cast aluminum and not plastic, and doesn't leak. If it DID leak, the OEM gasket is $20 and can be replaced in less than 30 minutes.

If you have an idea who it was, i would ask them if they found it, because with some people, they may take five month's remembering that they have it, but take forever to bring it back. You might even have someone who never noticed it, and yeah there are people like that out there, and just ask them if they could look. Hopefully they will watch this video, and return it, they could leave it at the door in a box, that would be nice. You work hard for your money, and you have overhead and employee's to pay, along with insurance for everything. Running your own shop costs a lot, and these car's are getting more complex requiring more tool's, and computer's to fix them. Dealerships replaces the cover since they rush the job and break them while removing. They are made of plastic. I changed the gasket on mine near 90k km, car has 180k km now and has original cover. 2012 335i f30 with n55 engine.

      We found a tool in my wife’s car once. No idea which shop it belonged to or how long it had been there, so it’s in my garage now. We’d return it if we knew, but that was five years ago already. 🤷‍♀️

      Replacing the entire cover is common practice I believe. It's likely to crack along with aforementioned built in pcv.
      I assume it also comes with new hardware? You'd need that anyway given it's aluminum.

      With this (stupid) design, the PCV valve is built into the valve cover. BMW does not sell the PCV valve by itself. There are aftermarket companies that sell a kit with a serviceable PCV valve, but Johnny stated he has tried them before, and they don't work.
      It's just a way of BMW making things more complicated than they have to be, in order to extort money from customers. Why charge $30 for a PCV valve, when you can charge $200 for a valve cover with a flimsy diaphragm?

    Car Ninja: Do you see BMW owners who say their car wears out the tires on the outside tread and the outside 'feathers'? I had a 2006 3 series that wore out the outside tire tread faster than any other car brand. Apparently it was a common problem with TSBs. I recently saw a BMW with the same excessive tire wear, Ten years later. I've only seen that on BMWs. Maybe they set up the negative camber from the factory to make the handling feel sharper.

    That pcv system being built into the valve cover, and other components that force you to buy larger assemblies. Wonder if a class action lawsuit would proceed if enough owners joined in. No reason some can't be separate.

    Surprised to hear Johnny hasn't just bought a new milwaukee ratchet. I would think with him owning the shop and everything he makes plenty of money to just to buy a new one. Perhaps that restraint is why he's a successful business owner though.
