  • If you need help raising a baby bird, you can use the information and diet on this video. You can send me questions, I will try and answer them as soon as I can.
For more info you can visit this following page which is for baby Sparrows and Starlings but works for most wild baby birds. www.wildlifehot...
Birdy, our baby European Greenfinch was orphaned when high winds dropped him from his nest. He was only 5 days old. This was the first time we ever found ourselves in such a situation and we hope that our experience can help others who find themselves raising a baby bird.
Remember: Birds are meant to be free, to fly and live in the open sky...

It's not crazy..believe me..they remember. I once raised a wild baby bluejay . Me and my ex separated and the bird (Mr. Blue) ended up 50 miles away with a friend. One day the lady forgot and had the window open and Mr Blue took off. I by this time had no idea what had happened to him and was just going on with my life. One day about 1 year later (trying not to cry ) I was telling someone in there backyard in the general area where he was originally raised about Mr Blue and down from the tree came Mr Blue!! He landed on my knee and was playing with my short strings (I had cut offs on at the time). I knew it was him because he lost a toe nail in a cage I had made him. He still remembered me after all that time! He took off finally, and I never saw him again. Maybe he just wanted to say thank you for rescuing him and say good bye one last time. So don't be surprised one day if your little bird comes back to say hello..

Adorable! We rescued a baby dove a couple of years ago. We thought he was a goner. He was ice cold to the touch, barely alive. I put him between my palms and kept him there until he started moving. Soon, he was making little whistling noises and trying to sit up. So, we kept him for about three weeks, until he was strong and had all of his feathers. Then we gave him to a wild bird sanctuary (very traumatic for us!). I loved the way he demanded food by rapidly batting his wings. After raising him, I noticed that behavior in wild birds who had fledged from their nest but were still following their parents around and demanding food. I also saw a female sparrow do that in order to coax a male to mate with her.

Or Alice Wolman, and fend off all by himself? both parents teach their chicks how to survive in the wild, how to find food, how to spot predators, etc.
Highly likely this bird didn't survive very long, of course they're exceptions. I would've kept it.

    • @OrAliceWolman
      @OrAliceWolman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Still, I think it's wonderful that you let him go. It's the same as letting your own siblings go; they can crash in a car accident or in the Himalayas...but you have to let go. Thanks for sharing this

    • @maevaedwards
      @maevaedwards  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Or Alice Wolman. I think it was the best thing to do. I saw him a few times after he was freed for about a week. The European Green Finch lives for about 13 years. I was happy to give him a second chance.

    • @maevaedwards
      @maevaedwards  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Alvaro Quesada you are very negative. It's very sad to look at the world that way.... I felt I had to give this bird a second chance at life when I found him, and I did. These birds leave the nest at 14 days. Very young. Their parents only feed them and then they leave them on their own. They don't teach them about predators or how to get food. It's a natural instinct. They don't teach them how to fly either. Birdy knew how to fly all on its own.... I didn't teach him. He just knew. Alvaro, you have to see the positive in things and try to help when you can. I believe life gives you back what you give to others. And I'm a very happy person. Blessed to see how a little effort can change someone's life, or save a little creature and give it a second chance.
Life can beautiful, but it's up to you to make it that way.

or wolman, no it's not good that she let him go..that poor birdy is dead , why do i say that because a captive bird growing up and fed by a human doesn't know how to forge for food on their own....biggest mistake a non bird expert would do..if you ever find a lost bird then decides to rescue it please,"DON"T EVER LET IT GO FREE LIKE THAT''...his chance of making in this world is ZER0....when they're with thier parents they were taught what's food and where to look , predictors etc...only inexperience person would say the thing you would say..go ask any bird rescue place if birds raised from a baby would make it in our world, when they have no clue where to find food?!

I was in NYC a wk. after 9-11 with a cousin in summerhaven park, a raven or some kind of big blackbird flew down to us a said hello, hi, how are you doing, then it said something about food. We couldn't understand much of what he was/she was saying, didn't have any food, and feeding birds is illegal in NYC, so we didn't feed him. Then he told us to fuck off, and flew away! Another time; a blackbird in the same park brought us a metal washer and i think it was a paper clip. We couldn't figure out why, but it seemed as if they were trying to say something to us. Years later i watched some documentaries on ravens, starlings, and crows; they learn to speak, and are very intelligent for a wild bird. Metal objects are gifts of appreciation or thanks. It is said that small, shiny, objects are especially a token of thanks for something. I can't think of why a bird would be thankful to us, we stopped the car to get out to stretch a while. It is a very good feeling to know that at least some wild animals in nature appreciate you!

Thank you ! Thank you for being a human that gives me hope for this world ! And thank you for taking care of this wonderful little being ! Yesterday we found a little sparrow here , first we thought he was dead, but he just was next to street and not moving ! We took him home and kept him warm since as outside its cold and down to 20 degrees minus ! Seems he can not fly ! Not sure why, he seems old enough, and maybe his right foot seems hurt ! :( I would love to help and checked for a vet but nobody here ! I am living in china and sadly they do not care much aboput birds, only if they eat them ! I feel a bit helpless as i want to help and not sure how so checking videos online ! Do you have any advice on how to get him to eat anything ? Thanks

I've got four baby birds rn. I think something killed the mother because I was hearing them chirp loudly for about two days and when I went near them I didn't get a "get away warning from the mother" (a mother never leaves her babies for long) so I started feeding them and then on a stormy night I brought them in my house (a tornado was coming) and I've decided to raise them myself. They are about 5 days old or so rn. Talk about some work. Feeding 4 baby birds every hour or two is a lot or work!

  • @AdventuringwithTrevor

Hope it knew how to forage and find food! Lots of baby birds get trained by their mom on how to find food in the wild once they leave the nest. I made the decision to keep the birdies i saved but have a huge enclosure for them so they have room and let them fly in the house all the time

You know it's always possible to get sparrows to eat from your hand. It's a bit time consuming and largely depends on any other birds around the area. Here in England there is just too many pigeons and gulls, however, in Switzerland I managed to have an entire towns sparrow population following me around. Find a small group of them, feed them some bread at first, throwing it out for them. Bread isn't really good for them, so after a few days change to musli, but no rice!! Seeds are best. Always wear the same clothing or at least a jacket so they can identify you.
It's so rewarding to have them as close friends. Something I think the whole world should know really, I really miss them.🥲

I found a dove egg and it hatched in my hand! I’ve had him for 4 days now and he’s very crazy. I feed him water with crushed seeds but strained so it’s just seed water and cooked egg yolk. He loves it! On day 5/ when he opens his eyes I will mix in some small seeds with his formula and start making it thicker and adding more ingredients such as dog food crushed finely and crushed oatmeal. He’s doing good so far but it never stops me from worrying that one day he may not make it through the night.i hope he does good!

We have a bird nest very close to the ground, one day I looked in it, and found a mummy bluetit sitting on eggs. Our bird bath fell over because of the wind a couple days later. The mum and dad had abandoned their babies. So I soaked dog food in warm water and added a bit of sugar, then fed it to the babies on a tiny spoon. I got a screen wiper (the size of my palm) and put it on the radiator. I then put the warm fabric on top of the what looked like 6-8 baby bluetits. We are thinking about bringing them inside our home

He should be reaching that point soon at about 6 weeks or so. Continue to feed him how you've been doing but start dropping some of his food on the floor right in front of him and let him peck at it for himself. Then pick it up and feed it to him. After a couple of days he'll actually peck at it and pick it up himself. Continue to feed him yourself but do this exercise as well and introduce a bowl of food in his cage.

*IMPORTANT WARNING FOR PET BIRD OWNERS* : The food that we normally give to the canaries (and other companion birds) consisting of a "complete, balanced and top-quality seeds mixture" bought in pet stores or malls, makes the owners trust that their pet is well fed, but it's not so: indeed the birds health is at serious risk.
The owners of canaries, parrots, cockatoos, budgies, cockatiels, etc., WE MUST PAY ATTENTION TO DOMESTIC BIRD BREEDERS AND VETS and keep in mind that although we feed them with such a typical seeds mixture, our birds are very likely in danger of suffering an unexpected, painful and practically inevitable PREMATURE DEATH BY FATTY LIVER DISEASE. Canaries, for example, will surely die at 4 - 7 years of age of the more than 14 that they can live.
It's sad that pet birds are fated to die early and painfully in so many cases. You have to warn people to avoid it!
This deadly disease is very common in pet birds but owners usually don’t know or detect it in time. And we can’t imagine that *THE CAUSE IS IN THE FOOD ITSELF* that we provide to our birds, in which such *a typical mixture contains low-fat seeds such as canary seed together with other VERY fatty seeds such as niger, hemp or nabine and, in addition, the birds usually prefer to eat the fatty seeds* so that their REAL DIET is unbalanced by excessive fat, gradually causes the fatty infiltration of the liver and in a few years causes fatty liver hepatitis and PREMATURE DEATH to pet birds.
*Also the breeding paste and its pigments, the fruits and the sunflower seeds can attack the liver* if they are taken too much or for too long.
It's a cruel disease that progresses silently and, when its unexpected symptoms begin, they are easily confused with other ailments so the owners usually postpone the visit to the vet at a time already critical for the life of the bird (besides that not all vets are trained to recognize this elusive and misleading disease, even to administer lipotropic and regenerative liver protectors in curative doses, just in case it's that and not a supposed blow). It's a process of slow and asymptomatic progression, but when their visible symptoms begin (acute phase) the disease accelerates.
*SYMPTOMS OF THE ACUTE PHASE OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE* : First, progressive sadness and/or pecking, hard belly (in many cases, with a dark spot with a half-moon shape on the belly, which seems a "tumor", to see it you have to wet your fingers to remove the down), falls from the sticks of the cage that seem for "errors of calculation" and then lameness (that make believe that they are by the previous falls, but both symptoms are due to that it hurts the liver), lack of flight and singing, the bird fluffs up his feathers or bends more or less slowly; Then, within a few weeks or a few days, heavy breathing with open beak, remaining lying on the floor of the cage near the food, sudden spasms from time to time (which make people believe that the bird is "epileptic" but it are twinges of pain of diseased liver), abundant greenish poop (caused by biliverdin which if it's not fasting, it means hepatic harm), then black and watery (from hepatic hemorrhages), then a strange purplish color of skin and beak, an excessive appetite and the final "improvement" of a few days (in the last phase, the already degenerated liver becomes deflated by what the bird seems to ameliorate), after which it suddenly dies among seizures (which may seem a heart infarct).
For the first symptoms the liver has already degenerated to 80% and only an urgent (and accurate) vet action can save your bird and revert the liver situation. If you simply feed your bird with the loose seeds mixture (even if you give it fresh fruits, vegetables and let it exercise, for example by letting it out of the cage at home), right now your pet's liver is degenerating, and neither you nor your bird know. *Without liver protectors, it's almost certain that your bird will die early and in many cases you won’t be able to determine its real cause* .
Hepatic lipidosis it's not only deadly by itself when the visible symptoms begin (sometimes even it does not warn at all until few moments before the death). Even before the acute phase it predisposes the bird to suffer infections, as it weakens the immune system. Obese pet birds have an higher risk of many other diseases, like arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Obesity in birds it's not so apparent but it's more dangerous than in other animals like mammals.
So in addition to giving to the birds lipotropic and detox / regenerating hepatic protectors preventively and routinely, breeders usually make their own mixtures with low fat seeds.
*PREVENTION AND/OR TREATMENT* : The time to act is NOW that your bird doesn’t have yet the visible symptoms. It's necessary to ACTIVELY PREVENT THE LIVER DEGENERATION. Fortunately it's easy to do it: *It's very advisable to substitute progressively (within some weeks, as per the instructions of the manufacturer) the mixture of loose seeds for some pellets compound food of seeds, fruits and vegetables (preferably those that already include liver protectors), because this prevents the bird from filtering and eating mostly the fatty seeds (but without insisting if the bird does not get accustomed to eating pellets because he could die for starvation within a few days). And, whatever the diet, it's CRUCIAL to add to the drinking water or to the food a LIPOTROPIC LIVER PROTECTOR that includes carnitine and / or choline, betaine, methionine, etc., (and it's very convenient to add a DETOX / REGENERATING LIVER PROTECTOR with thistle milk, boldo, artichoke extract)* .
Liver protectors are not medicine but cheap food supplements manufactured by pet bird vet laboratories that remove the fat from the liver, clean it and favor its recovery. It's essential to add them to the pet birds diet to conserve their liver. It's something that breeders and vets know, but we the owners usually don't know.
It are appearing in the market compound feed for pet birds that don’t include fatty seeds and that already include several liver protectors. *But the vast majority of owners still confidently feed their birds with the typical mixture of loose seeds with little fat and other very fatty seeds... And their birds continue dying for hepatic lipidosis in a large number of cases (likely, in most cases)* . Now we know that, as fatty liver disease develops from the daily food itself, it’s most likely THE FIRST CAUSE OF DEATH OF PET BIRDS, and more so as the bird ages.
    Webs on FLD:
    www.beautyofbirds.com/liverdisease.html
Liver disease is a slow, on-going progressive disease where the liver tissue is replaced with fat. When the liver disease has progressed, the bird may suddenly appear ill.
www.lovinghands.com/forms/Hepatic%20Lipidosis%20-%20Fatty%20Liver%20Disease.pdf One of the sadder diseases many avian vets see is that of hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver disease. It's sad in a number of ways since often the birds are very ill, life-threateningly so, or possibly having died suddenly. Often the owners have been unaware of the dangers of feeding their beloved pet the seeds, peanuts, or other fatty foods the bird obviously loves to eat. These are truly cases of "loving your bird to death". Any bird can fall victim to fatty liver disease.
www.researchgate.net/publication/46105643_Treating_liver_disease_in_the_avian_patient Dietary deficiencies of lipotrophic factors such as choline, biotin, and methionine may decrease the transport of lipids from the liver.
www.veterinaria.org/revistas/redvet/n111110B/111004B.pdf The clinical manifestations of hepatic diseases in ornamental birds are much more frequent than people could imagine and in many cases they are not appreciated, progress in a silent way and when they are evident, vet action may arrive late.
Most any avian symptomatology should be considered as if it was a pathology that could be serious, and not allow the disease to develop because then it will probably be too late. We must closely investigate the symptoms, take preventive measures that don’t harm (such as giving liver and intestinal protectors according to the leaflet) ask for advice from vets, breeders, etc. and procure the most appropriate treatment RAPIDLY, but without rushing in the treatment or with the doses in such small animals. If the days go by and the bird doesn’t improve, it's necessary to continue investigating and, if necessary, change the medication in an informed and contrasted manner. Doing nothing or stopping research usually ends up with the bird dead, but acting without being sure of what is done and in what dose, it likely ends the same way. It's necessary to obtain and confirm the sufficient vet experience and have the serenity to determine in each case whether it's convenient to hasten to do and / or administer what medicine and in what dose, or if it’s better not to do and let the situation evolve without medicating for the time being, or according to the medication that has already been administered.
A limp in a bird is not always an injury caused by a blow, but the symptom of a disease of some organ (usually the liver or an intestinal disease) that needs to be discovered and treated ASAP. When in doubt, change diet to one with the lowest fat possible (only birdseed, or with other low-fat seeds such as millet, chia, fresh fruits and vegetables) and administer lipotropic and regenerating liver protectors in curative doses immediately... although nothing could foresee a fatal outcome. There are also food supplements protectors of the intestinal mucosa and stimulants of the immune system. In doses according to the leaflets do not cause damage, it will surely save the life of your bird (if it's not too late), and will keep them with a basic wellness.

When I was merely a kid I am fan of birds, specially baby birds I tried to raise a bird I feed them rice only lazy of getting like some kind of prey - or even mix or give some efforts in finding other food aside from rice, never gave a life like you , maybe now but only just plans am so in the environment here , I saw a vid also, a not too old man a bird who is coming to his shoulder like the bird want to say something, wanting a food. Saw mum bird who was able to raise 3 or more babies , at least the bird experienced good life and other life after freeing the bird.

I looked after a baby sparrow for 3days..But I knew deep down in my heart he had to go to a proper wild bird farm..I brought him back from near death and gave him a chance in life. I work to long hours to give him the attention he need..I cryed for hours when I had to say goodbye..
But I'm glad I gave him love, warmth and care..Strange how something so beautiful can melt your heart and hurts to part with..I just rang the place he is cared for and they have informed me I done a great job and he is doing fine..Yes!!! Fly high beautiful..I love you.💞💞

I have always raised baby birds of all kinds and the formula I have found that works best having spoken to avian vets is dry cat food, and liquid calcium being the main two ingredients. Of course you soften the dry cat food in water, but never forget the liquid calcium. That is very important for all birds of all ages. Not saying what you are doing here is wrong. Just putting out what I did when I raised baby birds.

It follows me while I am in the garden or if I go for a walk. I leave water and some food outside now because the days are so hot. He really loves cherries 🍒 😊.

See this is exactly what I hate about life- the separations and endings that happen...and the pain of losing something or someone you're attached to..but whattya do? If you live like a recluse, monk or saint and never attach to anything or anyone, sure you won't feel the pain of loss, but then you're not really living; and if you do attach to ppl and things (and of course everyone has to when they're young since their survival depends on it) then you're setting yourself up for eventual heartache when those things or ppl leave, either through obligation, circumstances or even death...Don't know how to deal with it... "Welcome to the shi#show" I guess... 😐

I’m just confused to why you’d feed it dog food, and sugar. A finch eats seeds! Not sugar or dog food. Thank god you didn’t give it milk. But maybe consider a wildlife rehab in the future. I would not recommend this diet for a finch.

Someone raising a baby bird: you really need to look into the nutrients and what a baby bird needs...looks like you did your homework on that ....if you catch a baby bird you can’t just keep feeding it cat food for example. Robins need insects etc, other birds can use seeds. At some point assimilation is needed. Let them go outside etc.

Thank you very much for helping the bird. But Im just wondering, is it wise to let go a home breeded bird to the wild? Will it know how to search for food as it was used to be fed? Will ig know to protect it self? Will it find a group of birds to live with?
From what i see with cats brought up in homes with humans and abanded in streets, they still afraid of street and other cats, they cant compete with street cats to get food ,and they still stick on the houses doors and try to be with humans.
Maybe birds are different? Just asking
