- Tim Walz's 17-year-old son, Gus, stole the spotlight on night 3 of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The Minnesota governor took the stage to accept his party’s nomination for vice president. In the crowd, Gus, who has a non-verbal learning disorder, was a proud son, as he cried, stood up and mouthed while pointing to the stage, 'That’s my dad.'
Him being neurodivergent is irrelevant. He was a son showing raw emotion in a time he is super proud of his family. That’s how normal people react sometimes. He was overwhelmed with emotion and showed it. It was so beautiful to see and brought tears to my eyes. Tim and Gwen are excellent parents and have to amazing children.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for saying this. I have felt and thought the exact same thing. When I watched this moving moment at the convention, I didn’t think about him being neurodivergent. That was and is irrelevant. What I simply saw was a proud son expressing his abiding love for his dad. And it was beautiful.

When a 17 year old boy stands up, sobs uncontrollably, and proudly says "That's my dad," in front of the whole world, you know you are a good father.
Gus also has a nonverbal learning disorder and ADHD, along with difficulty controlling emotions. The fact he did that in front of thousands shows how suppportive and encouraging Tim and that whole family must be for one another.
