I cried when I saw this as it happened. Cried again watching it again. As a Daddy's boy, I know that feeling. I was and always will be proud of My Daddy. It doesn't even matter that his son is neurodivergent. This is human emotion. It's ok to be joyful and excited in a big moment. Some of us may express that bigger than others. If you work with teens every day, they have big emotions. I am honestly shocked at how much attention this has gotten. I also bet if this sweet kid were jumping up with similar excitement at a sporting event of some sort, there would be none of this shaming. That is the "right" kind of emotion for some. Ask yourself why that is.
We should all be so lucky to have this kind of love and joy. Keep feeling big Gus, Minnesota is excited with you!
So true. You can see grown men sobbing with pride and heartbreak at any major sporting event. None of them are singled out for public commentary. This young man's dad is running for VP, being cheered by thousands of people and watched by millions around the world. Gus's reaction isn't disproportionate at all. The only overreaction in this is the bullying itself - that's the real story.

And although Gus is considered nonverbal, he spoke volumes to me about the of character, quality and sincerity of his father. Witnessing Gus and his demonstration of love and proud for his father assured me that Tim Walz is the right choice for vice president. Thanks Gus!
