I was in high school in nearby Virginia in the early 60's and the Redskins were my pro team. When Bobby Mitchell got to the Redskins my Dad and I were leaving before the game was over and Mitchell was back to receive a kickoff as the other team had scored. When he got the ball he took off and then reversed his field, and reversed again, and again, and again..... I don't know how many times he zig zagged back and forth nor how many total yards he ran on the play but it must have been close to 150! Bobby was a wonder and he had some characteristics I loved. When he got a full head of steam he began a loping run chugging like a stallion down the track. And when he went up to catch a ball he would freeze with one leg stretched out in front of him, the other behind with heel pulled up and he would wait for the ball to come nestle into his arms. He seemed to be a great gentleman and while they say he was underrated and undervalued he was never so to me and my friends...all football players at Washington-Lee High School.

Bobby Mitchell was a great track star for the University of Illinois. I remember him in the late fifties as a super track star as a dash runner and hurdles.

This should have properly ended at 4:40, just some more unwarranted disrespect of the man in the title.

This is not THE reason, but may be A reason: He retired the year before Lombardi showed up and before Washington’s football renaissance in the 70s.

Mitchell was drafted by Cleveland in 1958 to be one of a stable of running backs for Paul Brown. He was probably there as a possible replacement for Jim Brown(it was the 60's, you had to be there). He was too good to sit behind Brown, so he was traded to Washington. He was a bit too small to be a full time running back, so he was moved to receiver. And he still made the Hall of Fame. That' how good he was. He wasn't more well known because Washington was not a good team then despite having 2 other Hall of Famers, Sonny Jurgensen and Charley Taylor. Look it up.

Cleveland teamed him in the same backfield with Jim Brown. It was Washington who moved him to pass receiver after trading for him.

@@aboveusall22 When you have P.O.S. like that Lucifer Guy it's the norm. They get on sites like this with their ignorance just to make a negative comment about anything that deals with blacks. They are the cowards we have to be aware of. Ignore his stupidity. I remember when the Redskins were all white and the brothers in DC cheered for the Baltimore Colts, because of their black players like Lenny Moore and Big Daddy Lipscomb. When Bobby Mitchell and Charley Taylor came to DC then the team made more money. Revenue forced the Skins to integrate. Nobody came to games where all white teams were playing the Skins, since by 1958 a large group of whites had moved out of DC, because blacks were coming in and the racist were leaving. I do not get it you have a team called Washington Redskins. supposed to be for the beige skin it Native American. but you got an African American. Complexion closer to your mascot. I do not understand English. black means bleach bleached up and pale. but you call people with melanin black. that's damn America is so damn confusing.
