It's interesting that Keith's attempts to find "meaning" in the environment puzzles -- clouds forming shapes, things lining up in 3D, etc, have been very cleverly set up by the game as an analogue of the "real" world. They tie in with the thrust of the movies -- making "sense" of the world. Sometimes things line up, sometimes they don't. That mirrors our experience of the world in a nifty way. As humans we can't help but attempt to make sense of what we see, touch, hear, smell, taste. But we become unhinged when we insist upon one-to-one relationships. This game is brilliant on so many levels.
Finally, an inserted video section I recognize! Young and old Richard Feynman. His books are brilliant because he maintains a sense a humor sorely missed in the academic world. The guy was a genius. Anyone interested should check out the full lectures/interviews floating around TH-cam or read his books like _Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!_
A very interesting thing to me about this run, is how Keith is so disciplined about seeing obvious things to explore, but saving them for later. He sees and recognizes the mountain, but doesn't go yet. He also spent quite a while knowing about the boat without riding it. I think most players, on solving their first couple lasers (if not sooner) look up at the mountaintop and go "that looks important" and check it out almost immediately, and then the panel in front of the river teaches them about the environmental puzzles. But for those that don't, there are a few scattered around the rest of the landscape which are just visually-obvious enough that the player still stands a good chance of figuring it out. The author and design team did a great job of setting the island up to provide many different 'paths to enlightenment'. I was especially struck by how this game design approach jives with the audiologs' juxtaposition of both Zen and Christian scholars of old talking about the divine being hidden from our senses.
Poetic to find this Cusa recording right after listening to the long lecture in the previous video. Both saying the same thing; that any word, sensation or thought only gets you further away from self or God respectively. Same concept expressed over 500 years apart,
I think the second guy also was saying about the game itself. You are on an island, you can explore it but don't expect to find a story or some kind of an answer, just find out more and be ok with whatever happens or does not happen.
I can't be sure, but I think the film actually was just one guy, just with a big time gap between them. The voice and face both seem pretty simular, and it would make sense as to why both clips were there.
No spoilers, but a warning: If you try to find 100% of things before going to the endgame, you will fail, and it will be frustrating. I wasted DAYS trying to find the "sixth vault". Don't be me. Don't worry about missing something permanently -- the game is smart, and will always let you continue looking.
+Ditocoaf To be clear, my main goal was to get as many puzzle panels and lasers done before I visit the mountain. Any environmental stuff I get is just me trying to be thorough.
I love how this video refutes the first video. The first one is like "science yay, art is useless", this second one is all about how drawing connections between the two is important.
That's not correct at all; you've seriously misunderstood what Feynman was saying, in both videos Watch them again. "I'd rather be happy not knowing, than have an answer that might be wrong"
If you like the desperate/triumphant imagery check out the guy in the middle of the town. Also, that brown peninsula makes no sense to me. There's nothing there. Why have a basically empty area?
A couple reasons. 1. The audio log 2. A place for that imagery of the man and the goblet 3. It also creates a land mark for the games secret map *spoilers below* The lake near town is actually a map of the island with various objects representing lasers/vaults/audio logs/triangle panels/etc. And the location of the brown peninsula coincides on the lake with a large brown log creating one of various landmark hints within the lake.
The stautes are greek references, I think the wine guy is the guy living on an island OH YEAH NO THATS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS hes on an island and he is unable to eat while theres a table of food. That might be mixed with Tantalus but I think its it's own thing
Hi Keith Ballard :) I have been watching Generikb and Zisteau's videos with this game. And i did like to see more... so i found you, and i did subscribe you. This kind of game i like very much + Minecraft (on peaceful), 'cause i don't like violent games. I think, i'll buy this game for my self. Btw, you have a nice and calm voice. :)
The only thing on the subject of religion that pisses me off is when people say not to talk about it. If you're so insecure about your beliefs, whatever they may bee, that you are too scared to even discuss them, then you need to talk about them more than anyone else.
amen. we had a random Jesus is Truth thread on a gaming forum. i was the first to ask if he was sure this was the proper venue. .. he got two poster that were trying to say he was wrong and just readying themselves for attack mode. and i think the OPer was just answering with scripture quotes. luckily a mode stepped in, basically saying he'd referee. with that said, my horse flew out of the gate, taking the person-to-person approach is something most tend to forget (which the thread was able to end as a positive discussion). because in order to properly discuss a personal topic with some one, you have to get to know where that person is coming from first.
This is one of the silliest comments I've ever read tbh. There's 3 reasons people including myself say to not being up religion 1) wrong place or time. Don't bring up religion in some unrelated chat room. 2) people just don't give a shit and don't feel like repeating things that have been said by other people 3) it almost always ends with someone angry and nobody learning anything Your whole comment is naive and silly.
As an atheist who loves talking about religion, I also know what it feels like to not want to have to argue with someone who only wants to attack me for having different beliefs than them. If someone doesn't want to argue with you then just let them be. Otherwise you're just being a jerk.
Don't ask me how but (i play the game with you) every time i solve the same puzzle (i solve it first before looking at your episode (solution)) i got a different solution then you have. So weird rofl.
One's inability to form a single valid argument for millenia that isn't a logical fallacy, a factual error, a lie, or a misrepresentation, yet still having a platform to share ideas that are insulting to the human intellect and enterpise can be frustrating sometimes!
A name is a concept of giving an identifier to a thing or concept, another word in language that refers to that specific thing or concept it was given to as a name. If one calls god 'god', or 'gobildigok', or 'magic sky wizard' doesn't matter. by the fact that it can not be given a name, you make a statement that names are meant to be meaningful. in the same way, if you can not express a concept of a thing as such, it merely means the language is limited. your concept that it can't be expressed as a concept is in itself one, and contradicts your premise. in fact this very abstraction means that which people call god by various names is nothing other than imaginary mental garbage. This nicholas of cusa has cropped up a couple times now. and every time he had nothing to say but nonsense.

the guy reaching up for the goblet also probably fits on with the girl reaching down in the swamp

Yes, this is Richard Feynman, one bright piece of humanity)
It's Richard Feynman, I believe, I could be wrong
Wow, this is so far my favorite of the series. The desert puzzles, the lecture by Feynman, plus Keith's comments at the end: they're just awesome.

Ditocoaf yeah about missing stuff what about the secret at the start with the door and the sun

This is always one of my favorite videos to go back to. Thanks for being you, Keith!

@@danielcrafter9349 You're replying to a seven year old comment. I've retained no impression of either video or even of Feynman.
Also in your defence in not finding these, you didnt even know about environmental puzzles at the time that you did the underground desert area
Hey, I am enjoying your Let's Play; puzzles are too hard for me, but the game is so beautiful. The double feature is the same guy- Richard Feynman.
his most famous line "hello you"
Really awesome take on the world, dude. Appreciate it.
I just checked, and my solution for the vault door is different, though the last bit with the three-block piece is the same. Neat!
You're reactions to the theater clips in The Witness have made me very curious to see what you would think of Socrates Jones: Pro Philosopher.
lol I remember playing that game a long time ago on Kongregate. It was really difficult.
If you like the desperate/triumphant imagery check out the guy in the middle of the town.

The dude in this video log is the epitome of what it means to be a Ravenclaw!
Wow, this movie was twenty times better than the last one

Think those crosses were speed indicators for the videos.
All I can say about the Nostalgia one is that there are definitely angles you haven't looked at it from yet.

Honestly, most of the people I’ve encountered who get upset when religion is discussed are the New Atheist type.

To be fair with poor Nicholas, he was talking about a deity, so it was impossible for him to be intellectually honest and right at the same time.
