- According to the World Bank, more than 55 million Africans live within 10 meters of sea level. In Lagos, Nigeria, coastal erosion persists, washing away several communities - a threat amplified by both climate change and human activities. Arise Environment Correspondent Laila Johnson-Salami has been documenting this crisis since June 2022. In this revealing documentary, she unveils the severity of the crisis putting lives at risk and impacting the livelihoods of millions of people.

As a small kid growing up in Ikoyi, I used to have terrible nightmares about sea levels rising and waking up with fish swimming past my second floor window.
When I lived in Lagos, I used to live in a beautiful seaside community just off Alpha Beach but it was wiped out in 2011.

Great documentary. Same is happening here in Ghana especially the coast of Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana
Ghana has a double whammy in coastal abrasion from the ocean and Volta River entrance into the ocean without much of a delta plane.
Keta's problem is caused by the Akosombo Dam, which blocks silt and sand from building the beaches on the coast. Niger River also has dam construction.

25 years ago i swim on the same beachfront ,the State government warned that the beachfront is steep- gradient and there shouldn't be residential development. However, omo onile, corrupt government officials, lack of good affordable houses all rolled into 1 and ......?

The Earth's magnetic pole is known to tilt from time to time for eons, therefore,the ocean will move in to the land and some areas will be submerged, sometimes it goes in as far as kilometers inward. In some beaches,the ocean will recede oceanward for kilometers.
Nature has a way of arranging itself, unfortunately, the estate developers would never say this or they are not even aware themselves.
This happened all over the world,and the elites know,they usually established their capital cities far away from the ocean,or lay tons and tons of boulders to check the ocean forces.
The ocean takes lands at a gradual tempo,so, people still believe they could do something about it,in 100years,all these locations will be totally submerged. Netherlands is a good example of this,you could check that out.

I wonder if there's an option like idk, at-sea dams or contention walls? I know it's not the prettiest of sights, but it might help to maintain a regular water level and save countless lives. The ideal would be to stop the dredging but we know all too well that won't happen, as it's likely that the govt. has economic interests within the dredging industry.
Give Anamnbra ,imo and Abia states THEIR ACCESS TO THE SEA...

We assume that the government truly cares. Most of them already have hideaways for their children abroad, in the event that Lagos finally caves in.
Great work. Eko Atlantic and the reclamation activities around it is the reason for the facade called coastal road. They just want to claim that area for themselves, dislodge the current occupiers in the guise of building road.
When other states in the country are not as developed, of course, people will keep on flocking to Lagos!
Most of this people flock to Lagos state, without any reason, not even any family members residing in Lagos. some of them sleep under the bridges around, erecting shanties in any empty land without proper consultations “perfect example is Makoko “ so when the shanty is brought down they start crying,mind you they left there peaceful village or state, some them come from states that earn higher allocation than Lagos state but because most of them lack education and common sense to make their state government accountable to them. @@RadioTV595 You seems to be living in the past, the capital of a Nigeria was moved to Abuja in December 1991 over 40 years ago and the 4th republic begins in 1999 (25 years ) ago and you are still living in denial. by the way ,i live in Ogun state and i can see people from southeast flocking to my state in thousand on daily basis and judging by allocations my state earns from federal government 5 billion while Bayelsa that is not half of my state by population and land earn 10times more and yet people from there are still rushing down to southwest. you are senseless, creating excuses for those lazy governors . Lagos allocation in august last year was 14billions while delta state was 106 billions and you are still shouting Lagos this and that , failure always have excuses

Sir, I will not respond to your invectives. It does not matter when the capital was moved from Lagos. If you don't want other people there, then just refund them, and they will gladly leave, otherwise there is nothing you can do. BTW you have not said how much you are paying for the repair of the 3rd mainland bridge and whether you will repay the Chinese loan used to build railway lines in Lagos. If you are so miffed about "southeast" flocking to your state, then do yourself a favour, ask your fathers why they fought and killed the southeast people to prevent them from leaving you alone when they wanted to (1966-70). Else, you are wasting your time living in cloud cuckoo land, a fantasy state (aka alternate universe).

This cannot be stopped. It’s too expensive and nature has to has its way. Erosion was most likely taking places when slaves left the west coast. This is simple natural and we’ll have to adapt.
Caused by putting dams on the river that block sand replenishment of beaches.

@@kushsakhu The Akosombo dam will silt up and become useless at some point. Ghana's only hope is to have nuclear reactors to replace the hydropower. Or, it could burn coal. The main problem in Ghana is that the population has gone from 8M to 30M since 1960. Western "colonizers" cause the opposite of genocide .... they bring technology that supports huge overpopulation, such things as fertilizers, hybrid crops, medicines, sanitation, etc. This all has a downside for the environment, if not for the extra 22M people who now exist.

Some of you are just dumb_, with little exposure and education. This is a global phenomenon. It is a result of climate change. I watched the one on Accra, Ghana and theirs is a lot more terrible than this.

How do you intend closing the housing gap when these constructed houses can't be afforded by the comman man that needs it. The rich men that will key into such projects(Eko Atlantic etc) already have their houses and are not among the ones that need it

The Titanic is Unsinkable" .It still beats my imagination WHY people are still buying & building expensive mansions in such a vulnerable area.The Japanese thought they knew all about building in costal regions untill the Sunami came. These people always preach doom and gloom about africa. It's happening right here in America. New Orleans is practically underwater and most of Miami will be underwater in 70 years.
New Orleans, like Amsterdam, has mostly been under water. Florida's situation is more due to global warming than human activities.
@@Frank-Bediko62 the human activity is people building where they are not supposed to build, including the government and corporations. I worked in New Orleans after the major hurricane. Just like in lagos people build on natural water ways. Amsterdam does the same thing. The difference is there government build excellent infrastructure to limit any damage cause by water.
@@taharka3897 There is a clear difference! Amsterdam is part of the low lands. It is never due to human activities au contraire, it has worked very to prevent that. It is the main reason that, the Netherlands has the one the largest gas reserves in the world, it refuses to exploit the gas, to the ire of EU, because the gas is preventing it from sinking. The whole of Florida coast line is under threat because global warming. Lagos' problem is mostly due to human activities. I know Orleans situation. It a combination of being a lowland surrounded by swamps: not human activities: there is no erosion. I know becos I went to Tulane as an undergraduate.
