- The Justice Department is suing Apple in a landmark antitrust lawsuit that alleges the tech company illegally engaged in anti-competitive behavior to build "a moat around its smartphone monopoly" and maximize its profits. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the suit Thursday, and CBS News legal contributor Jessica Levinson broke down some of the factors going into the case.

Good. When will they do a similar antitrust lawsuit against big health insurance companies and big pharmacies?
How about the large healthcare providers who’ve swept over the land making it nearly impossible for a doctor not be affiliated with them? In my city there are two choices to seek medical care. That’s it
Never lol . They have the most lobbyist.
@@antoniojohnson3925EXACTLY!!
Yep, that needs some attention too. These companies have been ripping off consumers for far too long.
@danielmartin7838 I know exactly what you mean!! I live in a central Texas city with a population of about 280k people, but we have only 2 healthcare systems, Baylor Scott and White or St. Joseph... I think every single doctor in the area is affiliated with either one of them.
and the right to repair issue needs attention
They need to repair the Amazon website. Half of the 1.96 .mp3 audio has been removed. Half of them refuse to download with the garbage android app they give you.
I agree 100%. 👍👍
Absolutely right.
The accessories thing is huge too!! The fact that they don't include a charger but sell them for $30 or more. My brother's nearly $2000 MacBook only comes with a single USB C port so if he wants to plug it into a monitor, USB wireless keyboard etc he would have to buy a $60 hub cable.
The 30% commission for apps is ridiculous too they have made sooo much money from that!
Can we talk about the 4 companies the own 90% of US grocery stores next please.
The ex big tobacco companies?
i second this
Much more important an issue.
This!
Yes, start with Kroger, then Walmart next.
As a tech myself, i can only say it was about time this issue got some attention with their anti repair tactics
should have happened a decade ago. so they're agreeing with Epic now? i wonder what effect it will have to the lawsuit
anti repair tactics are not just an apple thing.
What repair has to do with this? are you a lorita?
Yeah, but the repair issue wasn't addressed in this case. I think that case---right to repair---is really strong
@@jaimeduncan6167really? You can't connect the dots? They refuse to allow repair on their devices, and if they do the prices push you to pay for an expensive new device instead of allowing what would be a cheap, easy fix. It's part of their business model that's unethical. Unethical morally and environmentally.
I dont know a single developer (outside apple) who would disagree with this.
It really hurts devs
Apple is not in the clear, the messaging for example is bad, and deservers to be sued. On the other hand any intelligent developer who is creative will disagree with the store part. My company from a small country would have never had the growth it had without the App stores (Apple and Google). Intelligent people will never put a card to buy from a website on a small country from a small company. Apple and Google provide Payment processing, Payment insurance, Advanced toolkits, Sales tracking, handling of international tax law, distribution, update handling, security via sandboxing, etc. If I sell a product at Walmart, Walmart is going to take a part of the total sales, its normal. 3 kinds of people oppose the stores: 1. Hidden Data brokers, their games are all the same created by general companies the money is coming from the data and margins are tinny, you can't use the equilibrium price to maximize the utility because the game is not the product. 2. Extremely large companies that already handle all these details and have the confidence of the people. 3. Big data brokers like Facebook that do stuff like turning on and off the Phone cameras without consent effectively taking pictures of you and your children. The investigation started when Facebook and Epic band toguether to have access to children data.
We absolutely had smart phones before iPhones.
BlackBerry and Palm created the first Gen products well before the iPhone.
Next up for an Antitrust lawsuit... Amazon!!!
Uber... they drove the taxi companies out of business and now they charge more money... streaming services too they turned people into cable cutters with the promise of ad-free entertainment for cheaper and now if you want to remove the ads you end up paying more than for cable because you would need multiple services.
Why
Why isn't the DOJ going after the automakers for their prices? A iPhone doesn't cost 90 thousand dollars
Uhhh there are cheaper cars than $90000. That’s a luxury car 😂
Don't worry, Trump plans to double the cost of vehicles.
Because apple won't secure RCS messaging with encryption. They thought just adding RCS late in 2024 was enough. I guess after being a smug 😏 jack ace to a politician they didn't anything would happen. 😂
@@ArtyFactual_Intelligencetrump is rent free in your head bro. He's not even president. And the only thing we see now is more expensive groceries and fuel costs . 😂 remember the department of justice is mostly ran by Democrats 😂
Ive had this experience. My messages and videos are grainy or non-existent to an Apple product. Never thought about privacy issue. Please send Americans help!
My pictures taken with my android phone were grainy when shared with my iPad. I never could figure out why was this happening.

This news lady is irritating to me. She does NOT know what she is talking about. She is riding Apple and is NOT looking at the bigger picture.
"There have been lawsuits about gamer companies" lol
RIGHT TO REPAIR NOW!!! STOP SERIALISING CHIPS FOR NO REASON!!!
I was a programmer (Unix/Linux) for 3 decades. I loathed working on Apple because it was so restricted. I felt like they decided what software you should want and it was always something they provided. It was difficult to get and use anything else. And this was long before smart phones. It's a fundamental part of their culture. I would never own an Apple product, no matter what the alleged advantages. Android for me and mine.
Which begs the question, Apple: If your product is superior to Android, why do you feel the need-on purpose-to degrade incoming messages and videos from an Android phone?
What is android?
@@Privateuser9999 Google it and maybe you'll learn something
It shouldn’t be up to Apple to make other devices work better.
Greatest news ever! Apple had it coming!
They're worried about Apple over pricing? Exxon-Mobil had $361 billion in revenue, Shell had $340 billion, why don't they target these guys. If that's not a monopoly? Heck, everything is proprietary these days. Want a video doorbell-just pay their monthly fee. I've only ever owned Android phones & PC's, I hate Apple but let the consumers decide with their wallets.
We can do them next. Whataboutism isn’t a real argument. Grow up
You hate apple but don’t want a lawsuit against them????
@@sirdiealot53People are free to choose yet they buy Apple. Ironic, isn’t it? Maybe uncle Sam just want a piece of the tasty Apple pie.
I am happy with my iPhone the way it is.
And nobody wants to change that. The anti trust suit is to prevent apple from engaging in the nasty tactics they've been using for many years that have allowed them to deprive their users of options and force them into paying significantly more for their services.
What took u so long
Something tells me what made it snap was the banks and it's competitive ongoing complaints
Biden needed that payday from the CCP first
If Apple products were not worth buying then you wouldn't buy them, but since they hold 70% of the market they must have done something that was valuable to many consumers! They aren't the only player in town.
I guess you forgot about Microsoft!
The argument is not about them being worth buying genius, get a clue!
Literally the same thing as Microsoft, 30 years ago.
This is all bull.
Why don't they do this for healthcare insurance.
We all know why.
DOJ has been asleep for a long time, hopefully they are waking the hell up so they can do some good in the world
Amazon did get in trouble for the very same thing
Finally. I refuse to own a single apple product simply because of the exclusivity.
Mockingbird media cult member certified
LOL....that's not true.
I totally get that. But man, I love my iPhone and iPad 😂
You wouldn't be on here applauding the DOJ if you didn't wish you had an iPhone, you would be perfectly content with the product you bought and just move on!
@@richard135b7 ditto
This is why I have never owned an iPhone and never will.
Same here.
Good, stick to android. You have the choice and no one cares. 👋🏻
some of this is a stretch
I've been an anti-Apple fan since the '70's when I first started playing around with home computers. The openness of Microsoft and IBM that allowed 3rd party clones and applications helped the industry SO much more than the proprietary approach of Apple, which only helped Apple. I'll admit that in the beginning, the Apple was better at graphics than an IBM or clone, but that advantage was lost many years ago and it was the only advantage Apple had over IBM. 👍
I love it "Apple was the first Smartphone,” forgetting that BlackBerry was around much longer than Apple.
BlackBerry was AMAZING and great quality for a decent price!!
DOJ did the right thing.
55% market share is a Monopoly. Liberals. Ideology over truth, forever.
Now Facebook/Meta, and Microsoft.
And tesla
But Apple took it to the extreme
Healthcare, Assault Firearms control, Homelessness... they should be using taxpayer money to fix these issues.
All assault Firearms should be confiscated.
16:00 but with VHS Panasonic wasn't the only brand making VHS players, and Panasonic didn't comtrol the production of VHS tapes. The market decided but the market had many companies making the products.
I put sandisks into many of my devices, but sandisk is not the only maker of memory media, so it is the same thing. I had apple products a few years ago and remember using sandisk devices on both apple and windows, even on linux, but apple devices made it hard to do that and some apple devices did not even have a card slot. Apple makes it easy to use their devices unless you use non apple products. Is that a monopoly or just mean to apple users? Key to this is that because apple made me more upset than I needed to be, I no longer want apple products.
Don't forget about Beeper Mini and Apple iMessage getting blocked.
We all know this will not stop Apple even if they ended up paying a huge price for doing the wrong things they are accused of.
Im so glad this is happening. Anyone disagreeing with this is of acceptance of division amongst people.

I've hated Apple for a while. Finally, I see them getting sued, and it's glorious.
The app store is a no brainer, but going after imessage is an awesome bonus. Apple would have been smart to put imessage on android or at least properly support RCS (which is the open industry standard for messaging at this point).
The scope of this lawsuit is much larger than I expected, but I am happy to see it.
Apple already announced in the fall that RCS will be supported with an update in 2024.
It’s going to get thrown out…
They pretended to include RCS in 2024 to try avoid this 😂

Why should Apple have to share what amounts to security features though? They pay a lot of money to keep one step ahead of hackers etc and that is what I pay for. I don't think their computers are any better or any worse than anything else for my purposes but their security seems to be more strigent.
Why not put all this time & money where it matters to review big pharma and public utilities instead? Just a thought.
Imagine if 70% of the cars were Tesla cars and imagine Tesla had actual working full self-driving capabilities. Dan, imagine every time you go tell your Tesla car to drive to a Ford dealership. It refuses to drive or drives very slowly.

His #1 priority is to help trump get elected obviously. Seriously weak individual.
Thank God
Well if that’s all it takes to make an anti trust suit the. Let’s do one on the U.S. Government
Waste of time. Yes they curate what is allowed on iPhone. Yes they have an ecosystem that Apple users like or they wouldn’t buy Apple.
is also a waste of Money for the American tax payer. How much will this cost in legal fees?
Hi I wear hearing aids, because I don't have an iPhone, I can't get the hearing aids I want. The hearing aid apps work on iPhones but not an android. So I'm limited with what the hearing aids apps on android can do. However the apple app allows for all features of your hearing aids. That's wrong. Very unfair to hearing aid users. There's so many people in the world using hearing aids. Why is this allowed to happen?
wow...I knew this would come at some point...but was not expecting so soon
It’s about time someone does something about Apple. Thank you Mr. Attorney General.
its about time they cracked down on apple for monopolozing and thereby being able to price gauge their phones and make consumers pay ridiculous prices
Such as 100.00 per storage and memory tiers on either their phones or computers. I say go after them with everything youve got... Bravo!
It's about time! I'm tired of complaining and typing comments like "I wish our government cared as much as the European Commission!"
It would also be great if we could have better regulations/laws against energy companies (such as Excel) to not do outrageous pricing.
So my question is, why are they not going after Steam, Epic, and Google for charging the same fees? I understand some of it, but I guess they are trying to make an example out of the largest company in hopes the other companies change, too? I think they should let them charge whatever they want to developers, but you have to allow other stores to be installed, like in Europe. When I worked in retail, companies would pay for space in the store to display their product, and I kind of view it the same way in that sense. But if more than one store is allowed to be on everyone's phones, THAT would be free market, and probably drive prices down on it's own.
Probably not. Also, the fees are logical, if you go to a supermarket the supermarket charges a fee for your sales, and clearly Walmart will not allow a package that say: "This is cheaper at Costco". For small app developers like ourselves, the App Store is a blessing: it allows us to sell into the global market. No one who is not an absolute idiot will put his or her card and data in a website from an unknown company in a small country. The problem is that today most app developers are just front ends for data brokers. For the margins are tinny. In our case selling an app at 7 dollars vs 10 is not going to do any major difference and we don't have to invest so much in accounting, insurance for card transactions, card processing fees, compliance with international law, different tax laws in different countries etc. For users means that the SmartPhone revolution did not look like the PC revolution with viruses and ransomware all over the place. Big corporations like Adobe do suffer from the App Store. People will put the card for Adobe.
And that's the issue. Steam, Epic, & Google do not limit developers from hosting their products on other services, nor do they limit in-app purchases to their clients only. Apple is very restrictive.
Food, gas, rent are out of control and this mf are worried about the color of a message. Wtf.
Anti Trust lawsuits are the number one thing that could improve the life of Americans. More competition means better pricing for the average citizen and encourages innovation.
How about:
Grocery companies
Large corporate housing companies
The Republican and Democratic parties via their control forcing the two party voting system
Starlink
Revelon
General Mills
The oil refinery in Port Arthur Texas - largest in US and Saudi owned.
Use the same antitrust laws to add competition to every segment of our economy by breaking up the monopolies that have been allowed by our regulators. The regulators have allowed mergers in every industry to allow 3-6 companies to do 70-80% of the business! Since deregulation, airlines have merged or bought smaller competitors so that 3 companies control almost all of the industry. But, recently. when 2 low cost carriers (Spirit & Alaska Air) wanted to merge, the regulators applied anticompetitive reasoning to prevent the merger because there would actually be price competition for the big 3 airlines. Our regulators are bought by the dominant companies in every industry leading to monopolies & stifling competition. Try working for the consumers of this country for a change!
I am yet to hear from a reply to a lawsuit that goes like "we apologize for having dropped the ball. we'll perform a detailed analysis and issue a proper apology once the full details are known". nope. we ALWAYS get the same statement as if tattooed on the inner eyelids of all corporate lawyers: "we believe the claims are factually and legally wrong and we will defend ourselves vigorously in a court of law". I particularly dislike the use of "vigorously", the one constant word in countless slight variations of that statement
i decided that i would also like to hear a corporate lawyer say "...factually and legally wrong and we will defend ourself foppishily in the court of pubic opinion". i would also accept gaily, merrily, weakly
