"Look for wallets without dyed leather. Only look for open pore natural leather..." "Look for details like this blue contrast interior..." *shows blue dyed leather*
I take exception to a few things he says in this video as a leather worker. However, I believe he is referring to pigmented as in leather that has been coated in a protective coating including pigment. Then sanded and embossed with a grain in order to ensure a uniform color and visual appeal. These WILL last a good amount of time, however they will not gain the patina of a good leather wallet.
You misunderstood; dyed leather is fine, what you don’t want is a leather that has a thin layer of pigment/coloring on top of the real leather, as that will age poorly. A leather that has been dyed through is fine.
Or in the sense that whenever you want to use your phone you would have to take out your wallet and open it each time for everyone to see. It's basically saying "hey, rob me."
I just wanna to say that this guy put a lot of time and effort into his videos like if you into his description on this video and you will see how many things he’s put in there and I was really looking for a good Wallet to buy and I kept looking for video to help me and they weren’t like this one they just talked about smart wallets that I didn’t want or need and I stumbled across this video and he actually help me out I just want to say thank you.
Because I am broke, i use a puma brand cloth wallet my uncle gave me for my 15th birthday. I an nearing age 16, and i still love this wallet's functionality.
Those wallets are really nice but unfortunately when I looked it up on the website, if I bought a gentleman's gazette wallet I would not have any money to put in it lol. . You definitely get what you pay for but that will definitely have to be something I save up a while for to invest in .... something to save up for though! Thanks for the video!

@@complex2034 I have a fairly inexpensive Dockers wallet (made if full grain leather) that has lasted nicely with at least tens years of use and us still in nice shape despite my giving it the Costanza treatment. As always, wonderful video. I inherited a 60 year-old Dopp "tuxedo wallet" in mellow-touch black cowhide. Similar to a "suit wallet," but with some charming details: the left side of the bi-fold has a clear compartment for a driver's license and a compartment extending the length labelled "Letters" embossed in gold. Remember when gentlemen routinely wrote letters?! A lovely touch and a tip of the hat to a by-gone era of civility and gracious comportment.
I am a minimalist wallet man personally because counting my IDs, I only carry 5 cards and about $60 cash as a backup. Plus, I like that it fits in my front pocket with no fuss.
While I'm looking for a new wallet, just for a looks upgrade, my current 20 dollar Walmart sandalwood leather one is holding up nicely after 10 years. The only thing in the video I can seem to agree with is that the main plastic ID slot is starting to yellow a bit. But all the seams are holding up nicely. The slots are folded in and I guess glued down, none are catching cards. It has aged quite well with only a few wrinkles on the spine.
Your 20 dollar Walmart wallet held up for 10 years? That’s quite impressive! I’ve seen so many people with leather wallets from Walmart and most lasted 1-3 years before giving out.
I thought it was kinda of big at the begining because of my old wallet, this wallet keeps getting better over time. I really like it, i dont think ill ever use another wallet, every one says wow when you pull it out. I havent left feedback for the purchase but i will try to soon. I carry a bunch of stuff, business cards, ID cards, security cards etc, I've resorted to using two minimalist wallets with money clips. One money clip holds business cards in my front pocket in the other holds the rest of the load. I really like this split the load function. I would one day be interested in this setup with higher-quality leather. I am admiring your work and advice more and more. To the point that I have just ordered 13 pairs of socks from Fort Belvedere :-)
Amazing Job. Very informative. I was able to find a wallet with all your recommendations minus a leather divider which I admittedly lamented initially, and my god what a difference. This leather feels amazing. Even got it embossed like a boss. It was still pricey as it should be, but your advice guided me in the right direction. thanks.
I had a really good black leather wallet....My grandfather gifted it to me back in my childhood (it wasnt even expensive, in russia these things costed around 5$ in today's money), since then it lasted me flawlessly for exactly 32 years, and yesterday i forgot it on the plane (All my money fortunately was in my backpack since i was afraid of someone stealing it)....Man i'm really sad, looking for a good wallet now.....
I just ordered a black soft hair sheep wallet from Dent. I couldn't resist the light blue lining inside so I ordered it. Thanks for the education on wallets!

I keep my credit and loyalty cards separately in a Visconti card holder and their leather is also very soft and tactile. I will change soon to RFID for a bit more security and fancy a Jacket Wallet for dress. Can anyone recommend a good make?
great video, i had a coat wallet for many years from Aspinal of London, i decided to rationalise and found the Bellroy wallets suited my current needs. I totally agree that good wallets are hard to find.
The cost wallet is coming back in style. I like them because James Bond uses them. I feel high class using it. I don’t like back pocket wallets as they tend to hurt my back sitting on it too long, even the slim, minimalist ones.
The waxed edge ones age better - the folded edge is more prone to damaging/riping the leather on the edge - new wallet. While the wax one can when it gets a bit rough just get waxed again - same wallet.
Hi sven, im about to buy one of your fort belvedere ties. I want a colorful silk tie that is very expressive and stands out, just like the madder silk tie in yellow with red, blue and orange diamond pattern. I have a Coach New York wallet. It's water buffalo, brownish vaguely cognac leather, with tan contrast stitching on the outside and more subtle colored stitching on the inside, and rich red edge painting. I have a few concerns that I'd like some help with, if anyone can help. The outside contrast stitch is consistent and straight, however there is one small part where there are two stitch lines, as if the stitch line was repeated for a couple stitches, and this inconsistency is repeated on the other side. Does this mean the wallet is of poor quality? I was really excited to get the wallet, and I bought some "leather moisturizer" from the same store I got the wallet at (the Coach store at my local mall), and I used the moisturizer liberally, about once a week for a month. I became worried that it wouldn't develop a patina, so I stopped for two months now. Will it still patina, and will moisturizing it too much stop the patina or make it slower to develop? Made of water buffalo by the way, in case that's relevant. There have been some light scratches on the outside and inside, and before I would just moisturize it with the leather moisturizer and the scratches would be gone. But as I said, I'm scared the moisturizer will negatively affect the patina, so do I just wait until more very light scratches come, and it will look more consistent, which is what I was thinking of doing, because Raphael once talked about his leather weekender bag having the same effect. Thanks for reading, and help would be appreciated. I'm only 16 and discovered the Gentleman's Gazette a while ago, and looking to expand my knowledge of menswear, so I figured I'd inquire about my wallet to the nice people in the comments. Good day.

Question, I am in the market for a new wallet. There seems to be a trend where wallets have now become multitools and now not only hold cards and cash, but also have solar chargers, phone chargers, SD card pockets, and even a can opener and mini saw. One aspect, in fact the only aspect I have been interested in outside of normal wallet function, is RFID protection. Is there a quality wallet like the ones featured in this video which carry that feature?

The big problem with the phone case + wallet combo is that you run the risk of losing your phone, money and ID all in one misplaced item. Just like a well managed stock portfolio, you need some diversification to reduce risk.

Quality wallets are nice, I agree. But remaining slim, even while full of cards, is the biggest issue for me. I've had a Bellroy wallet for 2 years now and while it probably wouldn't pass your quality hallmark test, the thing works wonderfully. It's full of cards and cash, still remains slim, and can be easily tucked away. As nice as those wallets in the video are, they look like they'll be fat in no time once you fill them up. I could be wrong, though.
Hello, Why only vertical Wallets? you said nothing about horizontal wallets. in my mind horizontal wallets are better because they have more space and are more secure cz no one sees how much money you have down there
I am 30 years old, been using the wallet my grandparents got me when i was like 11 or 12.... Looking at this video i guess i did get a good quality wallet! Just only has 3 slots for credit cards :( Soooo think i may finally upgrade

Could you do a video over wearing undershirts with an open collar dress shirt
Quality video! Keep it up!
Thanks! We try. :)
Hello,
Why only vertical Wallets? you said nothing about horizontal wallets.
in my mind horizontal wallets are better because they have more space and are more secure cz no one sees how much money you have down there
I am 30 years old, been using the wallet my grandparents got me when i was like 11 or 12....
Looking at this video i guess i did get a good quality wallet! Just only has 3 slots for credit cards :( Soooo think i may finally upgrade
