    I use plastic also , I mounted a Kenco plastic layer behind two John Deere 71 flxi planters . Used it for many years very successfully , . My corn grows under the plastic , not through it , we pull plastic when corn is aprox.. 12 inches . Here in Ephrata , Washington

      Would be a lot of work pulling all the plastic but I guess it works? Nice to get rid of it, the biodegradable stuff breaks down but you still get some of it lingering around.

    were do you put fertilizer

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We broadcast it before we plant. You can also put liquid fertilizer in the tank instead of herbicide

    What row spacing are you running?

      @@macfarms I'm thinking of trying to catch some of the early corn market here in Manitoba. It sounds like we might actually have a little more summer heat than you do but I see my best results from mid-June seeding dates. Early May just doesn't have warm enough soil. I little help from mulch might push it over the top! I have my best results with a 74 day variety from Stokes Seeds. Last spring I seeded my garden in mid-June and was harvesting corn in mid-August and into very early September.

      @@jamesharder5643 I’ve grown sweet corn in my garden with the black plastic mulch, good crop but bugs got to it before I did that year unfortunately. I didn’t like the black plastic much, maybe this year I will try to plant a couple rows of sweet corn with the Samco planter.

    How much extra time or maturity does the plastic give you?

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems like we can plant 2-3 weeks early. Really we should be planting the middle of May. We were a bit late planting this year but not as bad as last year.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How long does the plastic stay on for?

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the time we chop it there isn't much left of it. I can't remember exactly at what point it was "gone" though. It just kind of slowly disappears.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I was wondering was do you cut the plastic open at some point to allow the corn to grow through?

  • @GerraldFarms

    I enjoy seeing all the different ways farmers adapt to fit there climate and growing season. We’re get rain here about every day. Have a good one

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that rain really slows things down when you're trying to plant. Thanks for watching Jacky.

    • @kswaynes7569
      @kswaynes7569 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jacky, Scott used this planter last Spring, it was built in Ireland, for their weather conditions. With Mac Farms sitting on the North edge of an island off the coast of Nova Scotia, it has some interesting weather. The plastic warms the soil to help germination in those conditions.

    I vaguely remember the old 175 Massey had those curled metal strips in the rims... never dawned on me when I was younger that's how you would narrow or widen the rear tires.

      Yeah the old power adjust rims are pretty handy, don’t see them much anymore.

    Great job on the video! Have you considered re-useable frost blankets? My neighbor uses them to get his sweet corn growing faster, and we use them occasionally for some vegetables. You would plant with a traditional planter, cover the fields with blankets, and then when the corn is at an acceptable height fold them up.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I haven’t heard of the frost blankets I’ll have to check them out.

  • @edsmith4414
    @edsmith4414 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Curious about two things. 1. Does the corn sprout grow up thru the plastic, or do you have to manually go back and split the row to allow it to come thru ? 2. How do you deal with the old plastic next year ? Does is merely dissolve to the point you can plow it under with clogging up plow/disc/etc then or something else ?
    Thanks !

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The corn will push right through the plastic as it grows. The plastic breaks down and just disappears for the most part. It breaks down with the sun, so anything that is covered won't break down, like where its covered on the edges and ends. Ideally you'd disk it up in the fall then it would have the winter to finish breaking down. I did a video a couple weeks ago raking rocks in a field we had corn in last year, I showed in that video what was left of the plastic. Thanks for watching!

    Never seen corn planted that way. Why do you do it this way?

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We live in a cooler climate, the plastic allows us to plant a little earlier and gets the corn off to a good start.

  • @dennygordon3923
    @dennygordon3923 2 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @kswaynes7569
    @kswaynes7569 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, you really did have some rain from the previews you did on the rock rake and rock picker. Great editing, splicing in narrowing up the MF375 from last Spring, plenty of drone shots and music. Just have to keep the dang crows out of the corn this year and your Illustrious PM has banned the "no I haven't, HA Ha" shotguns so that you could fertilize the corn with their carcasses!
    Have you ever watched Quick Dick McDick? His latest is another good one, "Tufnell at 10, part 2"

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty soon they’ll have nerf guns banned too lol the crows have been at the plastic but so far not as bad as last year. I’m sure they are just working up to it. Yes watch quick dick haven’t seen his latest one though.
