Hey guys, so I want to let you know that I will not be allowing any “bashing” in the comments. There is no need to be ugly about companies, machines, software, etc. we can have really good discussions without being mean to anyone. If you know me at all you know I’m not going to allow those comments to stay up. Thank you all for being kind in the comments!

If you viewers are having a hard time finding or understanding the the kind of information you're suggesting they find, I've had a great deal of help from AI chat bot. They can give you product information, and what machines are compatible together. Ive tried a many different ai apps but my favorite is Genie. That particular AI answers my questions extremely thoroughly, and always makes sure to warn me about any trouble I might possibly come across, like making sure I knowcompatible consumables are, and any additional equipment I might need or want. It's really very impressive all the things an AI chat can help you with. It saves me SO much time and energy!

This video should be mandatory viewing for anyone considering a cutting machine! Excellent advice and info, especially the first 3 tips about being honest with yourself about your readiness for research, technology, and change. Thank you for explaining that iPads/tablets/Chromebooks/phones simply do not have the same capabilities as laptop & desktop computers for software programs. Another issue is whether you want to use somebody else's designs or design things yourself. Some brands are less open than others to allowing you to upload images and projects you've designed elsewhere (such as in a Paint or Drawing program) and/or editing images in the cutting-machine software.

So true on so many levels. One example, I purchased an ea2 in Nov knowing I could use my android. Got my machine unboxed, cut their sample test and quickly purchased a svg file within hours of receiving my machine. Upon trying to open the file I soon found out files need a computer. Oh no, my heart and ambition rapidly diminished. Thankfully my boss purchased a laptop out of fear when the pandemic started for me to work from home if I were to get sick. I asked if he would mind if I used it for personal use and he agreed. Very blessed now.

Great video. I will be sharing with friends and family who may be considering purchasing a Cutting machine. I do tell them this exact information in my own way, but you are a trusted source who explains things easily understood and to the point. I avoided the Cricut line for years because they required use of their physical expensive cartridges. But in 2014 when the Explore came out I heard mention of a future Print then Cut feature and the ability to upload your own files from non Cricut sites. That fascinated me, as I have lots of digital clipart that I didn't use as much, I didn't like cutting with scissors. So I learned as much as I could about Cricut's print then cut feature and how to use Design Space. I also understood it was a cloud based software to run the machine, so realized I would need a powerful computer. I think that Cricut does need to up their Specs page for letting people know the specs that will give the user the best user experience, as right now they give the very bare minimum, that barely run the software. So with my pre-learning and research, when I finally bought an Explore, I was ready to dive right in on the day my machine arrived at my home . I now have a Maker and am enjoying crafting, still doing mostly print then cut stuff, but having fun. I am lucky that I don't get frustrated as many others do with Cricut's updates, or with changing technology. I go with the flow, and as you mention May May, all of these companies want to help users, not hinder them, but the user has to be willing to learn, be patient and keep pace with change. I am 75, and I think its healthy for me to keep being challenged by learning new things. Happy Crafting, Crafters. Thank you May May for all you do for the crafting community.

I will tell you this: If your computer is Bluetooth capable, the new machines can hook up that way so you don’t have to be in the same room. From a functionality standpoint, it works a lot smoother if you are in the same room though. Otherwise, it’s a lot of back and forth and it can get frustrating. People love the Bluetooth function but I rarely use it since I have to physically be by the machine to load and unload mats and start the cutting process. I might as well have my computer right next to it to start the process picking my materials and the tools in the software. One of the tools even requires a cable hookup to the computer which people somehow forget to mention.

As a techie that's doing research on cutters, I must say that your analogy about a tablet versus a laptop/desktop computer - "have a lot more internal workings to give you more external workings" - is a well said laymen analogy of the difference (in this context)
    Thanks for the video!

thank u maymay. because we really need to think twice or even trice before we purchased something. If we need it, if we can handle the overwhelming process of learning the machine specially if you have no knowledge how digital works. but this is not to discourage everyone this is just a reminder. besides having even just a cricut joy can do alot for you.

That was a really good video. I hope viewers take every word to heart. I personally own a cricut (and love it) But first I did download the design space program and play around BEFORE purchasing the machine. I also considered what I wanted to do with the machine, so I decided to get the explore air, I knew the maker could cut more materials, but I wanted to stick with what I was currently interested in. It is a pricey purchase, do your research and make an informed decision, by doing so you will help eliminate buyers remorse. And be patient with yourself and have fun. Thanks Maymay, stay crafty everyone.

I was tempted by the Cricut Joy but, after a lot of wrangling between 'need' and 'want', I decided not to buy that type of machine and I don't regret my decision one jot! I have no problem with using IT but what I do have is a Sizzix Big Shot Plus and several thousand dies of different types. They cut everything I could ever possibly need, so why discard them in favour of 'the latest thing'?! If I was brand new to crafting, I would almost certainly plump for an electronic machine but I'm not... and therefore will continue to use and enjoy my dies. 😊

I still use the dies I have with my spellbinders machine. I love making cards and mug designs and other vinyl projects with my Joy. I bought a Brother Scan N Cut to cut stamped images and images on paper to bottom line, not to buy more dies. I still use what I have, but in the year I've had it so far, I have saved a lot by not buying new dies. I stamped a bunch of images, colored them, and cut them out on my Scan N Cut, it was great. It even cuts whiskers on my cat stamps! I can't do that fussy cutting!

I was thinking the same to keep my Sizzix big plus machine and my dies and forget the hype. BUT the problem is I want to create 3D pop up cards, more assembling time than rolling up my tiny dies in the sizzix machine.
I love paper craft but doing everything manual is very tedious, even I have some chinese dies (2) of the same figure just to speed up.. It works but Im very interested in the 3D look and its becoming expensive with the dies instead of buying a SVG file for 5USD.
By the way you can cut bigger than the dies you get from the paper craft companies. There are tons of free svg as well.

And there you have it. I've been looking, too, but have an Accuquilt Big, along with many dies. I have bought some dies from another manufacturer, because Accuquilt didn't have the shapes, and an adapter to use those dies in my Accuquit cutter, but other than that... I can't justify, financially, or space-wise, another machine.

Last year I got a sizzix & I now have a few dies in most common shapes & it fulfils most of my needs. Not hundreds, just a few, about 3 or 4 punches & no duplicate shapes. Im learning from all of you not to over-buy & overstock my craft.. you are saving people like me alot of heartache

I recently revisited this video and it helped me make the decision to buy a Brother Scan and Cut. I'm relatively new to crafting and I'm still sorting out what I want to do. Right now, I'm making lots of cards for Veterans. Being able to cut various sizes and multiple images really streamlines my projects. The recipients are (hopefully) accepting of my novice status and I'm getting plenty of practice while doing something I want to do.
In my previous comment here, I mentioned a lack of space. I fixed that. I turned a spare bedroom into my craft room, complete with two large work tables and plenty of storage. I'm making the investment, so quality crafting will become eaiser.
Thanks, Maymay for your helpful videos. I'm really enjoying the current Monday series.

I was given an old Cricut CRV001 and while looking for various information on how to use it, this video popped up. I was hesitant to watch it because I didn't want to be told I shouldn't have it (is what I thought you were going to say). But, I'm really glad I watched it because #1) I totally agree with what you are saying. People laugh at me for spending so much time researching any new hobby I'm trying, even as simple as learning how to loom-knit or watercoloring, but it really does pay off and saves me from buying unnecessary accessories. #2) Mine is the old cartridge based machine, and I've been able to find what I need on the internet, and I don't have to connect it to my computer. #3) I've also seen too many people jump on the bandwagon for whatever the latest and greatest thing is without thinking about if they really need it or what other things they will need to make it work and they end up wasting money. Thank you for covering this topic.

This is a great video! My aunt is very tech challenged and had to take several classes at Michaels to figure out how to use her cricut. She still struggles. She bought the Brother SNC for the scanning, tracing and cutting abilities, but still struggles with that machine too. The Brother SNC does have a collection of designs built in the machine, so if you want to just stick with basic shapes and simple designs, no computer is needed. But I totally agree. Research, research and more research. Saves you $$$. 🙂

My daughter used her Cricut to make favors for her wedding (and boy was her husband delighted she saved money somewhere, that was one beautiful, Expensive wedding and itʼs paid for, but they could have sent two of their kids through a Masterʼs degree for what it cost, no lie, literally!) but that was one thing everyone raved about!
I appreciate this video because I was so jealous, but I will just keep my sewing machine and as someone said, use an Exacto knife. It was a good thing they got married during a summer break as she is in her second year of law school and needed that time to learn how to use it. But she loves whatever she has, and those wedding favors were gorgeous. Many people commented on them and realized sheʼs more than a high maintenance blonde.
Nope, after this, I am no longer green.

Another important reason not to buy a machine is if you don’t have a good internet connection. My machine didn’t work and it was because of the terrible WiFi I had. My number 1 takeaway from this video is the fact that you can actually download and work with design space without owning a cricut. I did not know that!
I have wanted a cricut for years and it might be some years more before I can buy one because there are other priorities for now. But now instead of spending time just longing for something I cannot afford just yet, I can productively spend that time learning to work with the software and finding out wether I CAN even work with it. If not; I know to stop thinking about buying a cricut. If yes; I will know how to design things even before I spend money on the machine.
This tip alone had me subscribe, after just finding your channel. Thanks so much!

I do art for fun and I'm considering making a sticker shop. I already have a bunch of designs completed and I know exactly how to make them into stickers (with and without a cutting machine). I've printed some and hand cut them but discovered that it's quite difficult with my disability as it makes my symptoms worse especially my hands shaking which is not good when doing lots of careful cutting. The shaking makes my cutting less precise and therefore the stickers are lower quality.
This video has been helpful making sure I consider different aspects. Overall I think a cutting machine would be beneficial for me and my current career goals/plans :)

After watching more videos than I can count, I decided to buy my Cricut Joy. I did the initial set up and cut fine....from there, it's been a search and learn experience. I didn't allow myself to get frustrated, when I feel overwhelmed, I quit, put stuff away and tackle it the next day or day after. AMAZING just how many problems I've solved just by sleeping on it... I wake in the morning going "duh"... that's why it didn't work!".... try again and YAY! It works. I have limited funds, limited supplies and a huge list of "want to do", but I will slowly build up my materials and learn as I go. Thanks mostly to you and Melodie's teaching videos.... I no longer fear Design Space... and am getting it figured out more and more each time I work there. Have even made a few of my OWN cutout cards.... "go me!!!" lol Thank you for your sincere words.. advice and encouragement. (Now, to work on getting my SNC2 updated and put it to work!) lol

The only problem I foresee, is that I live in South Africa, and with the Dollar Rand exchange rate being what it is, the materials are pretty expensive. Am busy looking at getting someone in the USA to send me some materials.
I can see that I am going to have lots of fun with this machine. Love It! ☺️

Omg so funny. I have been researching cutting systems for the last two days. I just did a utube search and found you! Fabulous. I really enjoyed this video it helps support my efforts. I am a quilter. I do both cotton and wool appliqué. With cotton appliqué I need to have perfect templates to start my project. I can use different mediums. Wash Away stabilizer sheets, card stock, template plastic and even cut sheet freezer paper. I am looking for a cutting system for just the mediums above NOT fabric. With wool appliqué I would cut my wool shapes using a cutting system. Now I am looking at either a Silhouette or Cricut. Unfortunately in Canada and my market in Alberta the quilt stores use AccuCut, Sizzix etc. The scrapbook shops carry accessories for the Silhouette and Cricut but not the machines. Thank you for this very helpful video. I am now going to download the Design Space software and see if I like using it.

Brilliant information and suggestions, Maymay. I really like my Joy, but as I have said here a million times, only used my Maker (not the newest) twice. I took one of your first classes and it was fabulous, but I never took the time to keep learning. Love cutting SVGs and making cards, vinyl words with Joy!

I've never used SVGs. I'm just not a computer person. So, even the Joy would be out of my league. I love my Cuttlebug, and My ScanNCut. No Internet required. And that makes me very happy.😊

@@wendywilson1736 your scan n cut can do what the Joy does, card making would be a bit different, but it can be done.

This is the best knowledgeable information I’ve heard and wish I had heard this before purchasing my cricut maker two years ago but this is still helpful in my learning journey. Thank you for sharing 😊

I agree with everything you said. Several years ago I bought a Silhouette Cameo (original version) and I continue to use it off and on for various projects. Every once in a while I think about buying the latest machine, but I ask myself what would I do with the new machine that I can't do with my old one. So far, I can't justify buying a new machine.

Excellent advice Maymay. I have a Cricut Joy
still in the box after 2 yrs. I’m technically challenged.I wanted to make my only grandchild T shirts and be able to stop buying dies. You were dead on about everything. I have to overcome my fear and just open the darn box.
