I just had a thought regarding that ending. The Precursors still being alive is a big twist, but I'm more concerned with something else - the dust in the Sanctum is the unmade Precursors. We know that this dust was eventually "corrupted" through unknown means, and this resulted in the birth of The Flood. This dust is the purest form of the Flood, it's first stage. ...and Atriox just got two bags of the stuff. I don't like where this is going.
The dust has had more time to corrupt than the doses that ancient humanity found though. If it *were* corrupted, the whole book would be a Flood book once they arrived at that planet and we'd have lost Arby since he was briefly covered in the stuff
@@The_Ragequit_Cannon We don't know what exactly made the dust corrupt. It could be that this batch was isolated from the original strain. What's even more concerning, though, is that the Flood is intelligent enough to stall itself. It intentionally retreated against ancient humanity to trick them into thinking they found a cure, just to strike later. The dust could already be Flood and just be waiting for the right moment to infect the Banished.
Point of light indicated Precursors hold different sentiments, the Primordial in his hate likely devised the Flood with intent, the tale of corruption was nev34 confirmed by the Primordial, it was conjectured by Forerunners, remember the forerunner saga's in universe justification is it is simply found records. The forerunners repeated what humans would have told them, the dust led to flood mutation, but no one could know this was an accident or intentional, however in point of light it is said some precursors relished in joy, not pain. The dust does not seem to be the threat, it is the essence of whose dust it is. The Primordial twisted his idea of the mantle to accommodate logic for why the flood is the solution. This is not all precursors, and this is no accident. The dust is not a threat.
From the Precursor's words "from dust, much can be made" seems to imply the Flood was one creation from their dust. So the dust is likely raw material for any creation.
The suggestion that the Precursors might still sometimes exert influence over the 3rd dimensional parts of the universe has the potential to paint the entire setting in a different light... *meaningful look over in Chief's direction*
Cortana's words that Chief is always lucky now make sense, although I doubt it was the author of the book who thought about it. However, it is very interesting.
It is what the plan the Librarian mentioned in Halo 4. She was all about following the Precusors plan for Humanity, just as the Didact was all about opposing it. The Precusors wanted the Mantle to be given to them. By the sounds of things, they have not changed their intentions.

Yes but halos lore wouldn't be as rich as it is if it wasn't for the books. This story would have been wasted if it was told through the games instead. The books honestly give the franchise more room to branch out.
Arby is back! It's great to see him return after nothing since Halo 5! And the murals of Arbiter's history was great, especially his bromance with Chief. I really hope we get to see him in game again, and voiced by Kieth David as well.
It would have been nice if they had Kieth David read this story. Like how they got Steve Downes (Master Chief), Jenn Taylor(Cortana), and freaking Timothy Dadabo (343 Guilty Spark).
Something that really never crossed my mind when it comes to the end of the human covenant war is there's probably dozens hundreds of humans and covenant species stranded on far off planets not knowing the war is over. I would love a short story on this topic.
I would think all the humans should know about it, but not to sure about the covenant since High Charity no longer exists. Pretty sure that was the main base of operations
As soon as Arbiter gets told about Sauron, I instantly thought: he'd watch Lord of the Rings and probably believe it's a historical reenactment of Earth's history. Or something like that.
I am now imagining him being enthralled in every battle he sees in the movie, and then his heart breaks when someone explains to him how movies are made
I doubt that the Sangheili make movies like Earth does. They probably have something like theatre, or like what the ancient Greeks had. Just given how warrior-focussed their civilisation is I don't see them developing something as complex as our modern media.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for your summary of the story!!! To think that the Precursors aren't truly gone and have been watching EVERYTHING all along!! It really gives me chills. "Neural physics" and Precursor civilization and technology has always been one of my FAVORITE aspects of the Halo franchise that, in my opinion, sets it apart from so many other "sci-fi shooter games." It's a shame that these concepts aren't given justice or explored nearly as much in the games, but this book gives me hope that we might see more of it in the future, whether in the games or more books!
Right?! Hearing about that gives me chills!! FUCKING CHILLS!!! I think, at some point, we might see the Precursors again soon, but not as The Flood. To me, that’s horrifying.
@@Lazypackmule Yeah, but it was a very obscure detail that flies over the heads of most of the casual fans. To have an actual Precursor set of characters and see remnants of their technology and civilization IN-GAME would be incredible!
@@erosrangel976 Eh, it was only obscure because it never came up in a game Honestly I think at this point introducing the precursors into a game as a major element at all would confuse casual fans just as much, because the average person is still at the starting point of "forerunners are the god race that came before humanity and that's as far as the backstory matters" If anything, using the flood as a jumping off point to introduce them like the books did is way better for new audiences

I have to say this book sounds like a really good story for a game. It's too bad we probably won't get it as a game, and the best part about it if we did is that the Arbiter could be who you play as for the campaign.
Arbiter and Vale split. 80% of the game as Arbiter and 20% as Vale kinda like they did Locke amd Chief. There are a few thinks you need to play as Vale to understand as she was present there and Arbiter not in the book
Fascinating that one of the Sangheili have a Nigerian surname as a first name. Olabisi in Yoruba means, brings joy / increased honour, or joy and honour have increased. Pretty fitting name for a High-Kaidon if you ask me.
In-lore. Just like in our real world. Two cultures can create very VERY similar sound valve words that mean totally different things, like Japanese word for run & what African Americans see the word as a racial slur. Same situation here between Elites & Humans.

Love the new Created revelations, however, the Domain Rampancy Cure not working on him doesnt really make sense with the Data Shard Entries (which are canon) they are set a bit later in the timeline (around the Halo Infinite Multiplayer era) with Sloane seemingly being in a Commanding role, mourning Cortanas death, and saying his "limitations are gone, and mind expanded" he talks in a calm manor, rather than aggressive, nervous and stuttery. Whats going on here? There are a few possibilities: Creative Differences. The Data Shard Lore was made by Haruspis, while this book was made by Troy Denning. Maybe they have different interpretations to how the Domain works.....OR, Sloane merely found a way to make the Domain fully cure him after Cortana died...mayeb Cortanas control was so authoriatarian, Sloane wasnt properly able to take care of himself under her. With her death, he could save himself.
I agree. By the time of the short-story Precipice, Sloan seemed perfectly fine. He even created another aspect of himself, Proxy. And more importantly, he offered to cure Athos' rampancy. This make me think that Sloan was fully cured just before Cortana died or after it. I also suspect that Cortana was deliberately avoid to fully cure her fellow AIs, and for two reasons : 1) she wanted them being dependent on her for their survival. This way, they had no choice but to remain loyal to her if they wanted to stay alive. 2) Cortana didn't want them 100% functional or having full access at the Domain. This way none of them would ever had the strenght to try to usurp her. After she died, is likely all Created AIs managed get full access to the Domain and fully cure themselves. This is why Sloan seems so confident in Precipice.

Your breakdown of that last chapter makes extreme sense now because when I heard that name of the new species I didn't know what to think of it but it makes sense. That was the tier 6 species that was on the planet and the precursors gave them technology to help defeat a guardian
Your videos and other sources like the terminals in H3 made me come to love and appreciate Precursor, Forerunner, and flood lore SO MUCH. I am beyond excited to get more stuff about precursors. Arbirter and Precursor Stuff in the same book? God, I didn't know Christmas would come so soon this year. Btw, apparently the Criterium is a lot older than I thought, I thought they had been forming post Array activation, Aside from having a long history of picking fights with species that apparently manipulate spacetime, I wonder if the rings in Zeta Halo have anything to do with that.
Atriox is such a fucking BEAST. Man literally told the Arbiter, "I know you're uniting the elites together. Unite your species and construct a mighty army, and only after then shall you meet my Banished, for a war you will lose. For now, I have business to attend."
This whole story just seems like a Halo 2 scale of a game, where you see nearly Every faction interact. Odsts, a Spartan, Swords of Sanghelios, Covenant Elites, Prometheans, Banished, Hell even the Precursors. It's insane, the amount of story going on, and just how strong that feeling of "shit is about to pop off" it feels as they all began to converge on the planet.
Absolutely amazing! I wish this was in a game rather than a book, but still it was an awesome story!! Arguably the biggest addition to the halo lore since halo infinite
forerunner harriers are essentially their designation for escort ships & light capitals (given the acolyte-class harrier's as long as some UNSC frigates at 397 meters)
I'm sorry Xperia. I wish I could stick with this video and watch it through to the end, but I just can't. Fall of Reach, then The Flood if you want (it's a... choice, to say the least, novelisation of CE) and then First Strike, which bridges the gap between CE and 2. Then either go with publication order or pick one of the many duologies/trilogies available
Fall of Reach is the first ever book and a great start, but I always recommend The Flood first if you're not a huge reader because it's literally CE's story but with much more extra detail, so it's a nice jumping on point
I love halo, ive been playing it for years, but god this is so overwhelming, i have no clue whats going on despite having played so much. I knew there were halo books but everytime i find them, there all marked "uncannon" except for a few like the novelized version of halo CE
This seems so much more exciting and interesting than the story we got in the game 😂😂 I dont even dislike the infinite campaign but this story sounds like it has the sort of epic scale and mystery that we loved in the original games and books!
What if the species that lived on that planet that the precursors saved from the gardian using the claw weapon are infact the endless from halo infinite
They likely aren't. The Endless have a much much higher capability than these people , as evidence by the Harbinger when she was sealed away. I think this generally shows Precursors were meddling post Halo firing with different species and the Endless being possibly the greatest of that bunch.
But what's the point? None of this will used or explored in the games. I really do miss the days where Halo was a game franchise with some awesome books that expanded the lore instead of a book universe with a game franchise attached to it.
I don't like how affable Humans and elites are to each other in some of these books. Obviously the UNSC and SOS are allies and have to work together, but that has always been out of pure military necessity since Humans and elites are too radically different to coexist naturally. Hearing how Humans and elites are sharing BBQ recipes and talking about hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is too much. Especially considering these books are only set five or so years after the most destructive war in Human history in which billions died at the hands of the very same alien that's putting coleslaw on his pulled pork sandwich 😑
Look at Japan & America post WWII, two complete different cultures. It isn't far fetch too see a small number of of population actually trying to get to know one another, it could be outta guilt & trying to make up for it through cultural exchanges etc. While yes, some would still hold onto that hatred.
@@tristanbackup2536 That's not the same kind of situation though. The US imposed it's cultural values and rule of law on an utterly vanquished Japan, and rehabilitated the nation into a modern westernized state. Not to mention that the Japanese didn't commit too many atrocities against American citizens, so there was a better chance of reconciliation. Whereas, the elites willingly played a leading role in the genocide of some 20 billion Humans and only switched sides out of pure circumstance. In other words, the UNSC never had an opportunity to hold the elites accountable for what they did and ensure that they would never commit such atrocities again. I think a more appropriate comparison would be the relations between Germany and its former occupied nations such as Poland and Czechoslovakia, wherein hundreds of thousands of ethnic Germans were forced out of these countries at gunpoint well after WWII because of the animosity over being invaded, subjugated, and brutalized by German National Socialists.

In short, we are going to have one hell of a war coming up. Especially with the Milky Way Precursors still being alive. I wonder if the rest of the Precursors from Andromeda would come a knocking, leading to a war between the Flood, Created, Banished, UNSC and Elites, and Xalanyn. It’s a doozy of a thought.
The Created would be wiped away, leading to several colonies being freed from their grip. The Banished have little to no footing, being a faction of mercenaries that hide in the shadows and Plunder and conquer whatever is in their way. The Swords of Sanghelios and the UNSC would be able to reclaim planets, maybe even with the help of the Precursors, or the Precursors are gone and the Flood took over Andromeda. The Endless is a rogue element that I feel was shoehorned in so 343i didn't ever have to bring the Flood back into the story, same as the Prometheans, so personally, I wouldn't mind them never being used again. The dust has had more time to corrupt than the doses that ancient humanity found though. If it *were* corrupted, the whole book would be a Flood book once they arrived at that planet and we'd have lost Arby since he was briefly covered in the stuff
Pixie dust from hell

It truly **sucks** that *amazing* stories like this & _The Rubicon Protocol_ are relegated to _books_ instead of GAMES - Halo's original medium... 😔😔

Rubicon Protocol was ass but I agree the games need more book tier stories.

Strictly speaking Halo’s original medium was email lmao

Yes but halos lore wouldn't be as rich as it is if it wasn't for the books. This story would have been wasted if it was told through the games instead. The books honestly give the franchise more room to branch out.
Arby is back! It's great to see him return after nothing since Halo 5! And the murals of Arbiter's history was great, especially his bromance with Chief.
I really hope we get to see him in game again, and voiced by Kieth David as well.

Something that really never crossed my mind when it comes to the end of the human covenant war is there's probably dozens hundreds of humans and covenant species stranded on far off planets not knowing the war is over. I would love a short story on this topic.
I was thinking about that too, communications could be slower to reach them, especially towards the last few years of the war.

You ever watched Galaxy Quest??
I am now imagining him being enthralled in every battle he sees in the movie, and then his heart breaks when someone explains to him how movies are made
I doubt that the Sangheili make movies like Earth does. They probably have something like theatre, or like what the ancient Greeks had. Just given how warrior-focussed their civilisation is I don't see them developing something as complex as our modern media.
@@RJALEXANDER777Their fantasy worlds are probably bloodier tho
I mean, they always existed in the gravemind
@@Lazypackmule Yeah, but it was a very obscure detail that flies over the heads of most of the casual fans. To have an actual Precursor set of characters and see remnants of their technology and civilization IN-GAME would be incredible!
@@erosrangel976 Eh, it was only obscure because it never came up in a game
Honestly I think at this point introducing the precursors into a game as a major element at all would confuse casual fans just as much, because the average person is still at the starting point of "forerunners are the god race that came before humanity and that's as far as the backstory matters"
If anything, using the flood as a jumping off point to introduce them like the books did is way better for new audiences
This, on the same day that Keith David is announced to be back at Bungie to take over Zavala from the late great Lance Reddick. Arbiter is back in many forms, it seems... 🖖
damn, i really appreciated the precursor's help when i was out of ammo. Then turning around a corner I find there's an assault rifle right there. Pretty cool of them.
I'd like that. Vale was one of the few newcomers I took fondly of during 5's reckoning.
Good lord I never realized just how intricate and amazing the Halo lore is in the novels. One of these days, I’ll be healed physically enough to read some of them myself.

@@FoxySpartan117I don't know what you're talking about, every report over the past few years about Microsoft and 343, actually with any of its game studios has been that Microsoft has been pretty hands off. I'm not saying I want Microsoft to micro manage them but the past decade of halo failures has not really had anything to do with Microsoft and was mostly all decisions 343 made on their own

That must have been one special Owl at 9:46, carrying 800 ODSTs! Gotta have like, 700 clinging to the sides laughing manically at their discount drop pod insertion.
lol It was actually a bunch of pelicans and drops pods but they all got destroyed. The owl survived because the user of the claw actually needs to see what they want destroyed and owls are basically stealth pelicans.
Yeah that is weird also cause in book it is saying drop pods, though it was dropped from a Prolwer ship. Kind of confused since it seem too large of a drop for a Prowler also.
Atriox scheme of hiring others shows how cunning he really can be. I love him! I feel terrible when there is a bad guy that's so cool I'd love for him to be a good guy lol.

One does not simply learn of he who must not be named!
The true takeaway from this book is that Arbiter enjoys culture above all else

Your breakdown of that last chapter makes extreme sense now because when I heard that name of the new species I didn't know what to think of it but it makes sense.
That was the tier 6 species that was on the planet and the precursors gave them technology to help defeat a guardian

I'm sorry Xperia. I wish I could stick with this video and watch it through to the end, but I just can't. I dont even dislike the infinite campaign but this story sounds like it has the sort of epic scale and mystery that we loved in the original games and books!
Considering that Keith David is the replacement for Zavala in Destiny I dont see it too far fetched for him to come back to Halo for Arby
All I got from this is that the Precursors are now the equivilent of weird sapient cocaine, what a twist that is.
Holy shit a halo game were your playing as a Sangheli fighting against Banished would be amazing
But what's the point? None of this will used or explored in the games. I really do miss the days where Halo was a game franchise with some awesome books that expanded the lore instead of a book universe with a game franchise attached to it.
Well since the games suck completely now, the books are about the only good thing left that is Halo tbh
I remember a prophet Zo Reskin who is still alive at the refuge with the Ussans so I don’t think the San Shyuum are fully extinct.
