  • Weston loves his fellow dogs, but becomes overwhelmed with anxiety when they are separated. Dog training expert Victoria Stilwell and a professional vet have a theory that Weston may be experiencing a post-traumatic response caused by an event years ago. Is there any way to cure him, and what will the owners make of the controversial idea of medication?

    Poor Weston 😢 He's grieving for his missing friend and it's not like he can search for him. I hate it when best friends are separated in the shelters although I do understand that it's not at all easy to find homes for one dog, let alone two. I hope he is doing so much better now ❤

    I rescued my dog from the shelter when he was 4 months old. He showed anxiety when we got in the car with him already. I didn’t have experience with rescue dogs before but I have had dogs my whole life. There’s a huge difference between getting a puppy from the breeder vs rescuing one from a shelter. I wish they had more training options but l did have a new dog training class that I took my dog too. While I don’t know my dogs backstory, it is quite evident that he was abused and neglected before he was rescued. It took a couple of years before he finally felt safe but he still has his fears to this day. I’ve used a lot of the exercises from this show with my dog which has helped greatly. My dog is 8 years old today.

      I have had the exact opposite experience with getting dogs I have had 10 dogs and they have all been from a shelter being a rescue dog. I’m going to be getting a dog from a breeder for the first time I have never done this before so I have no idea how it will go but I did make sure to do research on what a good breeder is and have pick out a good one.

      Funnily enough, i had a similar experience but i got my dog from a breeder. Breeder had him till he was 7 months old & didnt expose him to ANYTHING. He knew less than an 8 week old puppy from a good breeder. Turns out mom rejected him and the breeders seemed way too occupied with their house remodel to care for these puppies.

    Depending on what anti-anxiety med it was, it's horrible to take the dog off it for a day. Many of them, if not weaned off properly, can actually cause one to spiral into panic at the sudden change in chemicals. As soon as the owner said she had intentionally done that (not understanding how these meds work) I cringed.

      Same here and seeing her really unhappy face with the work Victoria did was not nice. She clearly thought she knew better than the vet and Victoria 🙄

      That worried me so bad when she said she intentionally skipped a dose. I work at a dog boarding facility and so many dogs are on anxiety meds that say “do not stop suddenly” on them. I never knew exactly why but it just seemed to make sense to me because that’s the same thing my doctor told me when I was on anxiety meds 😅

    We have had similar success with our dog, We rescued him as an 8 week old puppy during the pandemic, when we didn't leave the house very often. Once we started going out, he looked just like Weston when my daughter and grandson left the house together. He added in a long drawn out howl that was heartbreaking. Eventually we found out that if I take him to the back yard for play while they leave, he'll come back inside calmly.
    Thank you for all the good advice.

    That is why I really like that our local shelter doesn't separate animals that are very attached to each other. If that's the case they will only offer both up for adoption together, even if that makes it harder to find a new owner.
    And that's the case for all good shelters I know. My sister has two cats who were a case like that.

    The fear of anxiety medication changing personality and such is actually valid. Even in humans when taking anxiety medication it can really affect their thought process, personality, etc. It's why anxiety is so hard to treat. Being on that medication can actually make you feel far worse because you don't feel "right" or like yourself. Most say when the dosage or type of medication is wrong it feels as if you're not even in control. However, when the medication dosage and type is proper it does help to dampen the anxious feeling and allows for exposure therapy and such. Then eventually weening off the medication.

    • @vanclemmons
      @vanclemmons 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      when the medication dosage and type is proper it does help to dampen the anxious feeling and allows for exposure therapy and such - THIS, 100%. This should be on every label. There is very few people whose depression can't be cured even through (proper) psychotherapy, and who really need life-long medication. But for MOST people with depression and anxiety, any type of psychiatric drug is just a TOOL, not the solution. you take it so that you can work on your issues, and then you wean off the meds. this is what anti-meds people need to understand but refuse to; you can't possibly figure out how to overcome your hardships in certain situations if your brain is in panic mode in those situations.

    • @Eventide215
      @Eventide215 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vanclemmons Yeah exactly. The scary part though is getting those dosages and types right. Some medication just won't be a good fit for you. Sometimes the dosage will be really off. You need a good support system before you can really do things like that. Like you need really good friends/family that will be able to tell you're not yourself and get it fixed.
      The funny thing to me is social anxiety, which I have problems with, but not severely. In order to fix it everyone expects you to be social and call people and so on.. so I have issues with being social and you want me to be social hmm.. something doesn't exactly add up here.. Like using the phone is *extremely* hard for me. When the phone rings, no matter who it is, my heart drops. Just hearing that ring makes me anxious. And in order to fix that you want me to call a doctor of some kind..? lol Same with like getting disability for it. I could do that which would help a lot with my anxiousness and getting help but again in order to do that you have to call people.. lol

    My dog has separation anxiety when I leave the house without him… but it’s not this bad. He’ll whine and howl a bit, but then calms down after about 10 minutes.

    • @Eventide215
      @Eventide215 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      If the dog can calm down, it's not anxiety. Your dog just doesn't want you to leave which is normal because when you're gone it's boring. Get toys like those Kong toys you can fill with treats. Leave a window open if possible for more noise in the house, leave some music or TV on low, etc. Make the place more entertaining. Basically, imagine you being in your home completely alone with no sound, likely no lights on, all the windows closed, etc and you have absolutely nothing you can do to change that. Would you enjoy it or would you whine too? Anxiety on the other hand is like this. Weston *cannot* calm down because he's having a panic attack and the only way he can calm down is to have the trigger back. Which in this case is getting the other dog back by his side. Anxiety presents itself similarly in humans and is also hard to treat.

    • @rodneymills6477
      @rodneymills6477 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Eventide215 It's still anxiety even if they can self soothe. It's not... like this. It's not debilitating separation anxiety, but it is the normal amount of anxiety exhibited by every living being. All humans have anxiety too. Some can calm down, some can't.

    So heart breaking when it's clear any pet is suffering. Thank you for all that you do to help. In all seriousness, I was wondering if you might consider offering your service to help President Biden with training Commander - he's said to be very aggressive and prone to biting so is clearly in some sort of anxious state. I think it would be incredibly interesting to see how dogs who are around so many people and strangers can be helped to relax as opposed to domestic pets who are likely to spend most of their time with a handful of the same people most of the time.
