The lady lies about the Budapest Memorandum. It was not in exchange for giving away nukes. Ukraine would not have got independence in the first place without giving up the nukes. Those nukes were built by Russia and the command and control was with Russia. Secondly, the Budapest Memorandum envisages that Russia, the UK and the US would not threaten the security of Ukraine - but it states that the security of ALL signatories would not be threatened (that is, it is not just about Ukraine's security). Ukraine was not going to threaten US and UK. The Budapest Agreement did not envisage that Ukraine will be used by the US to threaten Russia. In effect, the US, UK and Ukraine ganged up against Russia which was against the letter and spirit of the Budapest Memorandum. The three refused negotiations just before the war started in 2022. They thought that Russia was bluffing and then when military action started, they thought they could defeat Russia with economic and military means. In 2022, three months into the war, Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement in Istanbul, but the UK and US blocked it and asked Ukraine to continue the war. It did not work out for Ukraine and the west, after the failure of the 2023 counter offensive. Now Ukraine has lost more and it cannot get back what it lost; and if it continues, it will lose more. Ukraine and the west cannot complain after defeat. Due to the defeat, the US wants to withdraw and is ordering Russia to cease fire and negotiate ! The loser wants to set the terms of peace. But it does not work that way. Sir Vladimir had said when Ukraine reneged on the Istanbul agreement that next time, the settlement will be on Russian terms.

Budapest Memorandum was broken the moment Ukraine has set its sights on joining NATO. Trying to join an alliance that is literally built upon an idea of countering Russia (USSR) in Europe is quite a questionable upholding of "no threat to Russia" agreement. More so, no one in reality would allow Ukraine to keep the nukes and they would've been either sanctioned beyond the reason or invaded by both Russia and USA, if they haven't given up the nukes they literally couldn't use at that point in time (the control over them was still in Moscow, it was more or less buying off the arms one cannot use which would spell the doom for the country). It is in no ones interest to have an another nuclear power in Europe, especially with such an unhealthy society and widespread poverty as it was back then (both Russia and Ukraine were struck with a heavy disease of far right, and I mean an actual ultranationalist movement, not just ones who're against the incoming immigration. Combine it with poverty and you have a spicy recipe that was already seen once in Germany). Poland and Hungary would've been the first ones to raise an issue in the NATO bloc because some movements that were popular back then viewed the parts of neighboring countries as Ukrainian.

Meaning if a USA right now were to attack Mexico and Mexico fought back striking USA, then USA has a full right on invoking Article 5. Second, it puts countries under an influence of multiple nuclear powers and Russia has no say in what exactly kinds of arms will be deployed there, meaning possible MMDs. Attack on Serbia or Yugoslavia (I don't remember) during their civil war was under a pretext that the war there threatens the security of the region. Budapest Memorandum was broken the moment Ukraine has set its sights on joining NATO. Trying to join an alliance that is literally built upon an idea of countering Russia (USSR) in Europe is quite a questionable upholding of "no threat to Russia" agreement. More so, no one in reality would allow Ukraine to keep the nukes and they would've been either sanctioned beyond the reason or invaded by both Russia and USA, if they haven't given up the nukes they literally couldn't use at that point in time (the control over them was still in Moscow, it was more or less buying off the arms one cannot use which would spell the doom for the country).
It is in no ones interest to have an another nuclear power in Europe, especially with such an unhealthy society and widespread poverty as it was back then (both Russia and Ukraine were struck with a heavy disease of far right, and I mean an actual ultranationalist movement, not just ones who're against the incoming immigration. Combine it with poverty and you have a spicy recipe that was already seen once in Germany). Poland and Hungary would've been the first ones to raise an issue in the NATO bloc because some movements that were popular back then viewed the parts of neighboring countries as Ukrainian.

@@ozzylad2497 First, because it is made to counter Russia and it doesn't forbid an aggression from member states. Meaning if a USA right now were to attack Mexico and Mexico fought back striking USA, then USA has a full right on invoking Article 5. Doesn't mean it would do it, but you get the idea - if a NATO member attacks you, you're only allowed to fight back on your own territory.
Second, it puts countries under an influence of multiple nuclear powers and Russia has no say in what exactly kinds of arms will be deployed there, meaning possible MMDs.
Third, NATO can make up a reason for an attack because apparently Article 5 isn't just about an actual attack on a state. Attack on Serbia or Yugoslavia (I don't remember) during their civil war was under a pretext that the war there threatens the security of the region.
And fourth, because it looks like NATO and EU are trying to encircle Russia to nullify its territory advantage. One of the reasons it survives right now and doesn't completely fall under Chinese influence is the fact that neighboring countries are helping with smuggling goods. If they would be in NATO forcing them to adopt foreign militaries on the border would solve that issue and Russia doesn't like that. USA isn't exactly a fair player when it comes to trade wars.

You seem think this is how everyone operates: you hurt us several times, so we hurt you when we get the opportunity. That fear is unwarranted, after WW2 you are the only one who is waging war here. It is backwards, it is an oligarchy, and quite frankly the current economic model there is of a Russian Empire. They never were a nuclear power, it’s a lie. Read the news coverage of that time it’s all there. WaPo had a good write up about that. Ukraine overall has been a hot bed for illicit weapons trade since the dissolution of the USSR. That’s why they don’t have anything left although they were left with a hefty share of conventional weaponry. Give it a few years, once it’s becomes so hotly partisan, news coverage again will start discussing extremism and illicit weapons trade over there, this time not former Soviet weapons but US weapons.
