Artist Name: Bernadette Reed and Le’Voy Wilson
Song Title: Green Again
About the entry:
A plant in the middle of a village called Abercwmboi burned off the toxic content from the locally mined coal to produce Phurnacite, a clean 'smokeless coal' transported for domestic use to other parts of the country in accordance with the Clean Air Act (1956). The article below describes how the plant became known as 'The Egg Factory', not because of the egg shaped briquettes, but because of "the sulphurous stink it kicked out." This could be experienced miles away when carried on the wind.

This article contains interviews with people who lived locally and worked at the plant: "At night, from there [the mountainside], I could clearly see the effluence pouring out from the stacks. Down below though, from the houses, that wouldn't have been so easy to spot, which is probably why after dark was a good time for them to release a lot of that muck into the atmosphere."
The song emphasises how Nature has made the affected area "green again" and poses the question, "have we learned how to balance the argument between need and greed?".
Among assertions that Phurnacite was having "no ill effects on anything or anyone", a local teacher says "you just had to look around you at the parts of the landscape that were just dying away."
So the song asks after the spiral of nature provided a fresh start, within the restored and fresh growth, has something matured to be able to meet with experience: "a very contentious subject... because, for everyone that hated the place, there was someone for whom it meant a roof over their family's heads and food on the table"
pFITE24:
You may have caught our pilot pFITE series which aired in Spring 2023. We were delighted with the engagement this project generated, and so this year we aim to take things up a level. By unearthing more great talent and reaching an even wider audience, we hope to spark positive discussion on something we should all be passionate about - the environment. This year, whilst using the pFITE name, we will be accepting entries from any, and all, genres or music.
By joining this project, you will have access to all that Home Stage has to offer, with specialists in production, promotion and business. With experienced professional musicians on the team, we understand the needs of up-and-coming artists, and how to elevate your profile.
As we start to receive more and more entries, we will be organising events around the country for our artists to appear at. At Home Stage, we are only looking to cover our costs. Any profits we receive will be shared between the performers, with the very best being invited to showcase their talents at a final performance in a national venue.
The pFITE24 entry with the greatest number of likes will receive a prize of £10,000. Please note that only videos within our “pFITE24 - Entries” TH-cam playlist are eligible for the prize. Don’t forget to like and share your favourites!
