    When you pull this all apart like you did, you realize how slick this tune really is. It exudes urgency, it’s fast paced, it matches the TV show theme. It could have been used for a paramedic/ambulance show as it has that feeling too. I know the show Night Rider was made in the early 80s. It is amazing that the TV shows in the 70s and 80s always had catchy tunes. What happened over the years? The shows these days don’t seem to put any thought into their theme music. Or maybe I’m just getting old. Growing up in the 60s and 70s was such a great time for music, and 50 years later we still hear the songs from those days. By the way I’m really enjoying the re-crafting of this song. How they came up with it from scratch bewilders me.

      You're not Old. Im 43 and I feel the same way. They really did put more thought into it.. listen to the theme from the Chip's TV show and also the old Star Trek it's absolutely amazing.

      @@ds99 See now I'm going to get into my Time Machine and go listen to these old theme songs oh yeah here's one more I love the theme from Three's Company it's absolutely amazing the sound that they were able to create

    • @ds99
      @ds99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnnie Jackson The Three’s Company theme had a guy singing with a bit of a goofy flare. The song also had the sound of a marimba which gave it a doorbell sound. The entire show revolves around the apartment and people coming to that door with the oval top. They really seemed to match the music with what was going on in the show.

    • @puppetsnob
      @puppetsnob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, producers didn't like having to pay for theme tunes and realized they could fit in more advertising. It's dumb though -- we still remember these shows all these years because of the theme tunes.

  • @toneranger

    Cool breakdown Claudio, I believe an EHX Electric Mistress flanger was used in the muted guitar. Musicians who played on the original recording of the Knight Rider theme were:
    Ralph Grierson Synth
    Mike Lang Synth
    Randy Kerber Synth
    Emil Richards Perc
    Ken Watson Perc
    Larry Bunker Perc
    Dennis Budimer Guitar
    Chuck Berghofer Bass

    In some of the long-distance driving scenes during the show, and also the "one man can make a difference" closing sequence appended to the end of some episodes, they play a stripped-down version of the theme where that second guitar track really shines through. Well worth going back thru the show to check out some of those shots to compare.

    For the guitar sound:
    Use a Squier Strat or a Mexican Fender. Amp settig around treble 7, mid 3, bass 1.
    Set the bridge pickup (selector all the way down) add a little reverb (spring tank) and ...
    Use your right palm to mute the bridge.

    Googling...
    Stu Phillips (the composer, and yea, he's still alive at 90 yo) says I used four separate synth players... two percussionists... two drummers... Fender Bass... one guitar... one acoustic piano. There were four keyboardists on the KR theme sessions (Sep 1982); Ralph Grierson, Ian Underwood, Mike Lang and some other guy.
    Grierson used a Jupiter 8 for the basic sequence type sound which he did play live. He also used a CS80 on that date and probably a Rhodes Chroma as well.
    According to composer Stu Philips, Ian Underwood was using an Oberheim OB-X and possibly a Prophet 5.

      I always assumed this. However, this arpeggiated part in the original theme diplays the additional sound of a metallic pick up of an electric guitar, kind of implying it is a guitar that is playing it. The bass part would be a real bass guitar, and likely mic-to-amp to get that punch, same with the drums. I'd suggest everything is real and live apart from the top line melody, which is obviously a synth.

Started watching it on Netflix and decided I had to learn it. It's so good. Sounds more like a sequencer in the original score like the dude is pressing 1 note and the sequencer does the rest. I think the recording you're using to imitate is too degraded and therefore makes you/confuses you into thinking elements are there that aren't or are depending on the sound you're replicating. I got on iTunes and brought up the original and the effects are much clearer. That synth part coming up in your future episode here is much clearer and the parts that comprise it. In your recording here, I cannot hear all the synth parts.

    It's possible I could have missed this mentioned somewhere earlier, but I've always felt the basic track was sped up and then overdubs added later. The drums, bass, and guitar may have been played at a slower speed and lower pitch. Playing it the way it is now is difficult at the speed it is. Also, me not playing guitar or bass, I'm guessing it may be in an odd key in it's current speed. The Beatles did this stuff. They also determined the Decca tape was playing too fast. When trying to play guitar to it they saw that it would be hard to play in the key it was playing. Slowed down it made more sense to play. Or another notable song I'm sure that was also sped up is "Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac. The bass was probably played at a lower key and also Christine McVie is singing higher than usual and not only that, she sounds different, most likely from the tape being sped up.

    Lol! X you had me at "Previously on Dr Mix"
    Your channel just inspires me to try and do these things. I have to make do with Cubase Elements but heyho.
    One of the most fun tutorials you have done.
    Will you look at the new Genesis Pro synth for 1 euro?

    Fabfilter Pro-Q "Phone" (i.e. ""telephone") setting would probably have done the trick on the guitar - basically instantly with very little to no adjustments at all - I imagine it would have saved you a bunch of time on the guitar. Excellent work none the less, as per usual! 😁👏👍👌👏🙌✔

    btw I would be very happy if one day you make a video about one of famous old Turkish songs, maybe of "Barış Manço" why not?

    Claudio...this all (details and hard labour and stuff) really takes me back to round 1993, where I produced some songs on my KORG 01/W fd. You know what? These songs still stand after almost three decades (made own compositions with original sounds...work, work, work-station!). All had to be done, as you know, on that intergrated display...pffff! But, hey, it's all about the result, ayhhh? Great show, man ;-}

    If you're having trouble getting that higher frequency component in the guitar it's because they originally used a synth for that part too, but to be honest yours sounds better ti me - more natural.

    I thought the guitar line was played on synthesizers. Impressive work! 😄

    I think also the electric guitar is picked way close to the bridge. So your picking (right) hand should attack with plectrum as close as to the guitar's bridge.
    The same effect is on the James Bond theme I guess, or even how the misirlou is played.

    Outstanding job, as usual!! I know you're always seraching for something good to challenge your skills. May I suggest you the remake of some Genesis masterpieces, like "Riding The Scree" from "The lamb lies down on Broadway"? It's a very interesting piece with interesting sounds and a very intricated and difficlut to follow odd rithmic structure (syncope,downbeat...). I mean, it's a very interesting piece! Hope you agree :-) (And mainly keyboard and drum ;-) )

    At 22:44, when you started that last part of guitar, in all of those separate groups of notes, there’s actually one at the end of each, that you didn’t catch. You did it as 3,2,3,2 and it should be 4,3,4,3. I couldn’t hear it at first, when I heard the whole song, because you did such a good job. If you listen to it without sound effects, you can hear it better.
