Perhaps showing why the winning teams have riders who concentrate more on pedalling up them than rolling down - Ineos once upon a time albeit with a different name
The perception of speed with this camera angle is definitely intensified. Tom is a unique rider in terms of skills, low weight, low center of gravity, I'd assume that in general his lines might be difficult to replicate by bigger riders in twitchy descents - quite a show!
I've driven it late at night, and saw more than one set of skidmarks going straight to the edge. Car, moto, or bicycle, you definitely have to be paying attention on Tuna.
When watching on a video from this perspective, it looks insane. But in the past, I did very similar things, in French Alps descending 86 km/h for prolonged time. My highest speed was 94 km/h in Bosnia and Herzegovina on a training ride. I had wind in the back, and it was a straight down segment without corners. I was 18 then. Now at 52 and a son of 16, I think twice before I let myself go like that and probably hit the brakes much faster... But once again, it looks much scaring when you watch it, then when you are actually on the bike. Okay, you need the sikls. I grew up between the mountains, and every training ride was climbing and descending. And back then, even without a helmet! Bikes and brakes were also of a lesser quality.
I too had similar experiences but Tom has much more skill than I ever had. I was more recklessly out of control with buckets of good luck. Definitely worse brakes in the 80's and 90's. Try this on C-Record Delta brakes, no thank you.
Keeping up with Pidcock on a descent puts you in the top 0.01 percentile of Pro cyclists in the world :D The first few minutes was just pure adrenaline until Tom almost lost it at 1:10 :D Love your videos, Brian!
I've seen this before too. The way he doesn't back off even an inch after taking what felt like several mm of his pedal is madness. I guess that's what you have to do at that level to win a race by descending better than everyone else!
@@harveybirdman593 Not deliberately lol! Once you know where the limits are, and you have the bike control, the limits are to be explored. Of course, if you go just a smidge too far, you're effed. That's just one of the reasons why he gets paid to ride his bike.
Riders putting a lot of faith on the cleanliness of the road to take corners at those speeds 😅 crazy. Considering that the edge of the road has some dirt and a bit on the race line would be disastrous.
Tom's descent is superb and he doesn't know the turns by memory like a local could. So nothing diminishes the feat. But SAFA's lines are just better in multiple corners...
Savage two wheel application. Just add gravity and twisty asphalt. Brian and Tom, you two always possess bike stoke and you shrrrrreded that descent!!!
Watching this descent several times has improved my own skills in this discipline. Not that I could go anywhere near as fast down this course, but I definitely have a better handle on corners now!!
Hold on a sec... I gotta clean my shorts... NOPE.... I died several times watching this. When his rear wheel slipped in the beginning I was like NOPE... scared the daylights outta me. LOL Then to cap off the ride with rough terrain and a sudden intersection... HELL NO !!! Thanks for the excitement
A man who can do anything on a bike with style. I thought the header meant that he'd be eating a fish sandwich as well, whilst going very fast downhill!
Anyone how doesn't lean into the bends as they watch this isn't a cyclist. One day there will be a Zwift VR set up, with bike leaning and bumps and wind noise. It will be supplied with a free sick bag and extra absorbent bibs liner, and a course in Yorkshire accents (a' up, oil, watch th'm bumps, t'was bit slip-e, like)
@@MrMooooooose Hah. Still need a car ahead to warn of any vehicles that ignore the one-way or don't know. Experience says, "Never assume one way will be one way"

Oh, man, amazing video. I wish I could ride like this where I live, but unfortunately there is no "one way" road anywhere. Here I must always keep an eye for cars at the opposite direction so I can't max out the speed at sharp corners like you do, gotta limit my speed so I stay on my lane. But cycling is fun anyway.

@SafaBrian how many has TP gone down on this router before the shoot? I think there was one section where you were just by back wheel. Was that unfamiliarity perhaps? Kudos to you for tracking TP. 🙌👏🏻
The fact that you can just casually sit on the wheel of arguably the worlds best descender is absolutely bonkers.
SAFA is probably one of the worlds best wdym lol
Pretty sure there was nothing casual about it!
I don't think he's casually sitting on he peddling his but off
He knows this descent far better than Pidcock, which help

Same again. Less speed and therefore less risk for the same thrills. I know who's really winning.
People need to see this road in person to understand how insane this video actually is.
Yes! I rode Tuna Canyon 4-5 times back in the ‘80s. It was two-way back then. Up and down it was ridiculous.
I've driven it late at night, and saw more than one set of skidmarks going straight to the edge. Car, moto, or bicycle, you definitely have to be paying attention on Tuna.
-12+% gradient. Might as well be jumping off the mountain!!! lol.

Agreed.
Watched from the couch, now need a lie down. 😄
How lucky and blessed...

Breathtaking descent. That pedal stroke at 1:10 had me sweating sitting behind my computer watching. Crazy how you 2 went down that hill

Truly bonkers. Accelerating on this descent is madness on its own, let alone combined with everything else they're doing.
