He is playing from the 1st edition but he made a number of changes, as Yuriy Leonovich noted. If you want to hear the first edition with no changes listen to Shafran and Shostakovich in a live performance from 1946.
This is the first edition- before Rostropovich sped everything up. I prefer it in this version- much more lyrical and haunting. The tempo markings are even different, moderate for the scherzo, and allegretto for the finale, for example.
i have some questions : some parts he's playing completely different than in nowadays sheets. i dont mean interpretation but just simply the notes. example: 2nd movement 9:00 this is an ocave higher in my sheets- also 8:22. does anybody know- maybe this is the first version of shosta. and he changed it later?? thanks

This is a wonderful recording. I have this on 78 rpm.
I think he play the first edition. I would say i prefer this old style more as the known Rostropovich style.

Piatigorski's tone and sonority is more Russian in earlier records, he had witnesed crimes of war so telling a lot with his cello.thanks.

Those 2 sections you point out are Piatigorsky's take on the piece. They are not part of the 1sdt edition. He is playing from the 1st edition, though.
The opening of this sonata seems influenced in no small way by Fauré.
