  • A quick overview of the acousticsamples VHorns Brass section, a collection of 6 brass instruments: two trumpets, two flugelhorns and two trombones.
    They are based on our proprietary HAT technology (Harmonic Alignment Technology) and follow the original approach of Dr. Giorgio Tommasini and Samplemodeling on harmonic alignment. The HAT allows for continuous control over the amount of air while still based on real samples thus creating a very realistic instrument but with great playability.

    Ah, this sounds perfect!!!! I've been using modelled horns for years and usually buy the few libraries offered in this space, as they all offer something different & can't duplicate the others. But, this library offers some things the others do not with the virtual space, authentic articulations, section option, & mic features. These sounds so rich & soulful. This space is getting so competitive. I can't wait to get these. I usually use Session Horns for instant sections, but modelled horns are so much more expressive but, though exceptional, none of my other libraries have a section feature without a third party app. I hope this comes to iOS for live playing too; I will sell my Tyros 5 if it does... Maybe. LOL

    how do you set up the Roland AE 30 pro wind controller to create a group playing live or in a recording session?
    I noticed that on the Roland AE-30 Pro, if you set the Scene to trumpet 1, the trombones do not play in their respecful range - in fact they play an active higher which does not allow me to create the group sound I need - any suggestions?

      I honestly have no idea what the AE-30 does when you select the presets, what you can do though in UVI Workstation is click on the multi button at the top and then change the "oct" value for the part you are using. It will then change the octave to which the insrument responds.

    Just purchased and LOVE it so much.
    UPDATE: My only suggestions: 1.) is that keyswitches be included which fixes key velocity to 127 for manually producing convincing "rip" effects & which reduce velocity to about 15 for "shakes" also the inclusion of one(s) that produce auto 'rip' & "shake" to create some uniformity when generating section. 2). Hopefully UVI scripts allow for a "smart-harmony" feature that assigns the proper instrument to each degree of a chord based on where it is assigned in the MULTI section and that AS can create some templates...oh, but, duh, that's what Divisimate is for. So, just one suggestion then.

      @@DarrinNoNAME We plan on using this for various instruments like woodwinds, horns or even strings, but it make very little sense for pianos as you never have to go from one timbre to another, on a piano, once a note is played, you have no further control over the timbre. And that's what the HAT does, it allows for control over the timbre with time.

    • @DarrinNoNAME
      @DarrinNoNAME 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acousticsamples I gotcha. Makes Sense. but what about velocity and dynamics?although the timbre may not change, Capturing very soft notes played on a sample based piano, (ie; the range from 0-20 often times is the same sample) seem to be harder or take up more hard drive space when trying to capture the wide range of the piano. Modartt does a great job of creating physically modeled pianos although I'm not for sure what their process is. But it's still missing some realism. However, I understand (with my limited knowledge) what you mean. Looking forward to the future of what you all do with HAT!

    As someone who plays brass and also works with MIDI this suffers from the same problems as other MIDI brass. One issue is the vibrato sounds fake and robotic, not at all how a real brass player employs vibrato. The various parameters you show here simply don't get the job done.
    However that's just one issue - ultimately the problem is the vast variety of how notes can be attacked, released, the physics of transitions between notes whether slurring through the partials or using valves, the subtle nuances of tone production, how it changes at different volume levels, how the player can alter the tone even on the same sustained note. Single tonguing, double-tonguing, triple tonguing, doodle-tonguing - you can't just rapidly repeat a single-tongued articulation and expect it to sound like double and triple tonguing. There's a wide variety of effects - shakes, flips, doits, scoops up, scoops down, glissandos, growls and on and on. Also again the use of vibrato. All of this varies as you go through the range of the instrument. I had to chuckle at the mic'ing options - a fake sounding trumpet still sounds just as fake using X-Y as it does using mid-side etc. The individual trombone articulations sound marginally better than the trumpet and flugel.
    It's also apparent this uses sample stretching instead of every note sampled individually.
    The mute sounds are laughable - it sounds like they tried to simulate the various mutes with processing and EQ. Listen to pro players using these mutes and compare it to this.
    Where this plugin might be useful is in certain limited ensemble situations say behind strings with basic articulations that don't expose the worst of the shortcomings or in situations where you either want a hokey, robotic fake brass sound or you or the client you're producing music for simply don't care - where they say "Eh, this is good enough" and don't want to pay to hire real brass players. One trick is to use at least a live lead/1st player for each section in jazz/stage band settings or principal player for symphonic situations - that will go a long way toward making the section sound more realistic. In a jazz band the single most important horn to make an otherwise MIDI ensemble sound better is a live lead trumpet who's got their stuff together.

    • @acousticsamples
      @acousticsamples  ปีที่แล้ว

      I will not comment too much on the fact that a real player is always better, because its always the case... If you can hire a musician, just do it.
      But i just wanted to answer two things. You are incorrect when you say that we use sample stretching, we are not, except maybe on the extreme top range of some instruments to match the range that we got with the second one (as in trumpet 1 player went maybe 2 or 3 notes above trumpet 2, so we extended the trumpet 2 range in which case trumpet 1 was chromatically sampled all the way), also we did not use sample stretching at all, but some more advanced pitch shift that keep the formants of the instrument.
      Also for the vibrato, if you are looking for more realism, you should try the manual one as it allows for a fine control and will allow you to vibrate exactly how you want, but it will add the necessity for a second MIDI CC.

    • @brassplyer
      @brassplyer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acousticsamples If you're not using sample stretching you managed to make it sound like you are - it has that same "off" sound. Are the samples velocity layered?
      I make my comments with a certain degree of commiseration as someone who's experimented with trying to reproduce lifelike brass phrases. But even using high-quality samples I found it to be an exercise in futility. I even experimented with manipulating the attack and decay, tried various ways to merge the end of one note to the start of another. It's particularly problematic on the high brass - trumpet/picc trumpet, cornet, flugel. I've had somewhat better success with trombone, French horn and tuba. I've found with many other instruments you can recreate a pretty convincing facsimile of them - electric guitar, harmonica, oboe, percussion, bagpipes, piano, various mallet instruments - glock, tubular bells, marimba, vibes, xylophone. But the trumpet family seems to defy convincing reproduction under all but very simple uses.
      Solo violin is problematic as well - your solo violin while clearly not the real McCoy is better than your solo trumpet. Btw - it's Harmon mute with an "R".

    • @acousticsamples
      @acousticsamples  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brassplyer But when i see your comment about "our" solo violin, it looks like you are not talking about our products (Acousticsamples VHorns Brass Section)... We don't have a violin... yet...
      Just in case anyone else would be reading these comments, VHorns is not sampled in the traditional way, so there are no layers of samples per se, we use modeling techniques based on multiple samples for each note to reproduce the whole dynamic range. This explains why the attack variation is controlled by the velocity, but the sustained sound timbre is controlled with a MIDI CC and you can basically change the dynamic of a note in real time thus allowing you to reproduce any real note variation.
      And maybe i'm missing something, but "harmon" is spelled correctly with an R in our interface...

    • @brassplyer
      @brassplyer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acousticsamples 1000 pardons. Yes - I was looking at the SWAM violin after looking at their horns. How I got there was from the first video I saw related to VHorns where someone stated in the comments that their brass was superior - meh, I listened to the SWAM horns some, it still sounds artificial. Like VHorns in certain isolated moments SWAM can sound okay but on a phrase of any complexity it's glaringly obvious that it's not the real deal. I noticed they had strings and I conflated their company with yours. My commentary about VHorns still applies.
      I'm sure it's spelled correctly on the interface, I was going by how Harmon is pronounced by the narrator in the video - he calls it a "Hammon".

    • @brassplyer
      @brassplyer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acousticsamples I'm confident that a major part of the problem is that when you hear a recorded trumpet performance you're hearing the end result of all the physics stuff that's actually happening within the horn and comes out of the bell. Btw did you know that the horn sounds different in front of the bell than it does from behind the bell?
      With synth/MIDI you're stringing together chunks of sound that are removed from what happens within the horn to create that same succession of notes. Slurring between the partials of the horn - for example with the open Bb trumpet - low C to G to C to E to G etc. without using valves or between notes using a piston or rotary valve creates a very specific sound that you can't reproduce - or at least I have yet to hear it consistently and accurately reproduced just by using those isolated chunks. Even if the sounds came out of an actual trumpet they're **recorded** trumpet sounds and the sequential combination of those sounds is missing crucial components of the totality of what actually happens inside a trumpet.
