    Just finished reading this! I really thought the slayer was going to be Pan- of Greek myth. But it never really nails down who Samson is. They say Forest god, but then call him the devil in the end. Samson wants to know who he is the whole book and then still it’s a mystery. I agree that reverends wife should have stayed the one redeeming character. It’s like there is no one “good” in this, except Booker. Which jeez, cat torture was hard to read. I wanted to like this, and did like many aspects. I’d recommend since I can see how there would be different takes on a story like this other than my own.

    I listened to the audio version on both Krampus, and Slewfoot. Enjoyed them both very much. Brom’s pacing is similar in both. I usually listen to audio while on long road trips, and hiking. Both books worked for me. Especially the narrator for Slewfoot. Excellent.

      I have a feeling I would probably enjoy his works a lot more if I listened to the audiobooks. There's always something about his pacing that I find jarring when I read.

    Brom has forged his own style. He did all the artwork for TSR's Fading Sun expansion. I met him once at a convention and he was very gracious. I read his Krampus book and it got better and better.
    To whom it may concern, these are my 3 favorite art books:
    - Aviation Art by Lou Drendel
    - The Joy of Art by Carolyn Schlam
    - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

    I loved Krampus. I read it a couple of years ago for a book group and actually thought it was such a creative, different take on Krampus. I am new to your channel and I love the goth look. I love the color black and I read and watch everything horror.

    I just finished listening to it on audio, and the narrator was fantastic. I felt Slewfoot was on a Jason Bourne type of journey to find out who he was and different forces were pulling him in different ways. I was like you and felt the epilogue either was unnecessary or should have been totally rewritten. As it was, it only seemed to paint Abitha and Slewfoot in a negative light. Also, I felt truly sorry for Sarah Carter, the reverend’s wife. And, yes - the sheriff, Helen, and Sarah should have all maintained the way their characters were for the entire novel.

    I'm with you Violent on the pronunciation. German-American and a German major in college. Kraaahm, pooos". Not Kram as if you're trying to cram something into a closet. Side note, I loved this video. I'd love a full video on the various Krampus books before Xmas. The Night Before Krampus, Krampus the Yule Lord by Brom etc. I don't know if you'd be up for that but a wintery spookfest would be so fun. NOS4A2 by Joe Hill? Thanks for all you do.

I'm a big Gen-X Stephen King gal (started in 8th grade, shudder) so Joe has been on my TBR. Can't wait for your thoughts.

    Congrats on 1000, you deserve it!!! Your channel is my favorite! Dang, I just ordered Slewfoot today as I just found out about it but I kind of wish I hadn't now, lol. I love anything to do with that topic so I figured it would be a nice Halloween read. The Witch by Robert Eggers is one of my favorite movies of all time so I'm always looking for literature similar to it and it seems like there's so little out there, when it comes to well written literature at least.
    I can't wait for your review of The Hour Of The Witch! I bought that at Bam yesterday, really looking forward to it. Have you read Revenants by Daniel Mills? It sort of fits with all this. It's been so long since I read it I can't remember much about it but I did enjoy it at the time. Thanks for the video & congrats again! :)

    Some of Slewfoot is actually based on real folklore. Like you said, it also has some made up things woven in too, the name Slewfoot is a common name for Folk devils in many cultures.

  • @vinceven
    @vinceven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Old Slew Foot/ Slew Foot Satan/Slue-foot (etc.) is an old name for Satan and all over christian blogs. slew is the american spelling of "slough", which first appeared in the 17th century. the Slough of Despond is a deep bog of absolute misery in an allegory by John Bunyan, which came out in 1678, twelve years after the events in Slewfoot. anyways, i liked Brom's Slewfoot! it might not have been very original, but the man can paint a picture.

    I'm listening to this book now and I'm cautiously poking through reviews (and trying to avoid spoilers) because, while I'm half way through, I have questions.
    Your statement about how Brom took liberties with Krampus's lore, and about the misspelling of 'wendigo' means you're probably a good person to ask. I get really skeeved when it comes to appropriation of folklore from 1: oppressed populations and 2: populations outside the author's purview.
    What my internal interpretations WANT to see is that this very euro-influenced devil character has awoken on this continent because he was brought here by the same ideologies that brought the puritanical shenanigans. He exists as the devil in the puritans' folklore because of their mish-mashed distortions of biblical scripture and non-biblical mythology from across the pond. The animism and mythologies of the native people don't need to be involved at all. The local wildlife can find commonalities between this cernunnos/horned god/pan amalgamation and the deities/spirits of the indigenous folks, I guess, but I'd hate for this book to treat this Eurocentric folklore as universal.
    I'm at the part where the three spirits are offered goat's milk, if that's specific enough of a reference point. They made some corn grow, too. Samson has gotten his name and, earlier, he remembered being worshipped by people in buckskin clothing. I really hope he's not talking about native north americans because, much as you said, I'm not finding north american equivalents to a goat-human chimera (granted this is with a bit of googling. hardly anthropology degree-worthy endeavor here.
    anyhoo that was longer than it needed to be, and this review is from a year ago BUT whatever. I'm from Connecticut and the story has a few fun things going for it so I'll keep on plugging through

      Sorry for the delayed response. I just saw this. It's been so long since I read the book, that a lot of the details are really fuzzy in my memory. However, I don't think Brom does too much research into his characters' mythology. I think he just runs with ideas he likes and molds them to fit his narrative, disregarding a lot of cultural folklore. He definitely does this more noticeably in Krampus than Slewfoot from what I recall.

    • @SwampyreMcCobb
      @SwampyreMcCobb ปีที่แล้ว

      @Violet Prynne no worries! I finished the book and he did indeed utilize characters from native folklore for his own purposes. I love messing with folklore and adapting it for innovative uses, but when it comes to indigenous stuff it would've been better to leave it alone, so I didn't enjoy this book as much as I could've had he stayed in his lane.
      One character I couldn't look up coz I can't figure out its spelling (listened to audiobook) is mamoonapet. So if that's not the spelling I'd love an assist!

    My new novel, “Like I’m Looking At A Missing Person Poster” is out. It follows Icarus Pearlyard after his dreams of becoming a sailor go awry, propelling him into an introspective odyssey in this psychological drama full of angelic kittens, cursed sea captains, siblingship, temptations of revenge, and wine..

    I think you fully managed to miss the point of the book. The two main plot points are Abitha processing her stages of grief over Edward’s death, and Abitha and Samson’s actualization in their identities.

    I wanted to like this book SO much.. but really.. by the end i just found myself severely disappointed. I've tried a few Brom titles so far and always feel the same - he doesnt supply enough exposition and detail, I always find myself wanting to know what things look, sound, taste like.. and he is so dry when it comes to exposition. I also found that 90% of the book was pushed along by the hatred of certain characters... Which only gets me so far before I get bored of the bad guys never getting what they deserve.. untill the very end. And by then im just bored off my ass. Also.. this wasnt a horror novel at all imo. Again.. NO DETAIL.
