  • Great portraits are not limited to the big studio. Nor do you need to take hundreds of pounds of gear on location to produce high-quality images. Small lights are getting more powerful, feature-packed and affordable all the time. YOU CAN MAKE STUDIO-QUALITY IMAGES with little gear and little space.
    Choosing easy-to-use modifiers is a BIG PART of the ANSWER.
    Today, Tim uses just three Godox speedlights with Godox modifiers to show you how to produce great headshots for everyone that needs them. Models, actors, executives, and creatives LIKE YOU, all need fresh images.

    SPECIAL TECHNICAL NOTES: People always ask, and it's redundant to put the same info in every lighting video.
    • I always use an ISO of 100 when shooting in the studio. When on location with a scene that needs it, I will use ISO's up to 1600.
    • In the studio with the Speedlights and small soft boxes, I average 1/2 power max on my MAIN light, resulting in a working aperture of f/6.3 or f/8. In my classic large studio with Photogenic Powerlights and big Larson Soff Boxes, I average f/11. We are usually shooting a bigger scene and perhaps more people.
    • I always use the longest focal length possible. All my lenses are L-Series zooms.
    • RATIOS: I no longer use meters as my 50 yrs of full time of studio experience avails me better decisions than a device looking to make everything 18% gray. There is a lot of subjectivity in photography. As a rule, I demand Zone System tonality. (You can look it up. See Ansel Adams.) There should be detail in all ranges, highlight through shadow. To that end, these are my recommended "normals" from which you can alter to taste.
    CHILDREN: 2:1 (highlight to shadow ratio). BABIES: 1.5:1, WOMEN: 1.5 - 2.5 depending on many things, such as hair color/density, skin tone, desired outcome, MEN/ EXEC 2:1 - 3:1, MEN Dramatic 3:1 - 4:1, GROUPS/FAMILIES (non dramatic) 1:5 - 1:2, GROUPS/ARTISTIC 2:1 - 3.5:1.
    • How far off the background are the subjects? 5 - 6' in studio.
    • How far away is the camera? Usually, as far as I can get to use the longest lens possible. Exceptions: Having to work more closely with small children.
    • How far away are the lights? As close a possible, depending on number of subjects. Generally 30-40" from the light's surface to subject. Everything must be adjusted when the group gets larger, but the same directional look can be maintained.
    • Reflectors: There is a video just on that subject. My default is one large white panel.

    Thanks Tim. I can see that you like the Godox Soft Boxes too. Did you get the grids for them yet? My octagons aren't seeing much use since these arrived. I now have the X2Tc transmitter driving up to 4 MS300 monos and I have 4 Godox TT600 speedlites now. I sometimes put the old flash transmitter on top of the X2Tc so I can use some of the older lights along with the new stuff. It has worked out perfectly for me.

      I'm really happy with them. I'd like some larger (pop-up) boxes though. Yes, I also can add any of my other lighting units with the simple (and inexpensive) $40 receiver.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @charleyl264
      @charleyl264 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I too would like a few larger of the same design. These are very portable, collapse down easily, and I like that. Not real happy with the sag of the boxes at the Bowens adapters though. Considering adding Velcro, but then they couldn't be rotated easily.@@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques

      @@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques Oh, I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was inserting the Bowens ring from the inside through the hole. It appears to fit from the outside, being held under the spring wires. Never had this type of soft box before. They fit better this way, and you are right, no sag. Many thanks.

  • @josephboldt8065
    @josephboldt8065 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the last few seconds you say you're waiting for larger soft boxes. The beauty of the S2 brackets are that you just have to purchase some Bowens mount speed rings and they'll snap right into the bracket. Then go grab any of your soft boxes you use to use and viola! Just do some tests to see if the speedlites coverage is suitable to your taste. Plus lots of manufacturers make great boxes and octaboxes adapted just for speedlites.

      Thanks for the info!
      I have a Bowens adapter, and I know I can connect to almost any box. I have extra Larson/Sweetlight boxes, but the V1 doesn't have much of a modeling light, so, I don't want to go there yet.
      What I would like is a larger version of the square pop-ups that Godox has. I have the 80cm. (32") A 45' or 48" would make me very happy with my new location kit.

    Did you eliminate the ambient light via camera settings or did you go with ahead with the shoot anyway?

    • @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques
      @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. ZERO ambient light registers in my studio portraits. At 1/125th f/5.6-11, a misfire (flash failure) yields a completely black frame. When I'm in a location with ambient light, I use that light in my equation.

    noticed for the model you make her body parallel to the main light and face towards it, is it the same posture for guys or you square their chest off with the main light?

    • @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques
      @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      placement of light is based on many things, but ultimately, what are you trying to achieve?This model is very tiny, and based on the attire, she can handle light from any direction. Often facing bodies into the light will make them appear larger (good for some, bad for others), turning out of the light reducing the apparent body size. Normal main is 45 degree off subject, and by default, the body is turned just slightly out of the light for further shaping.

    Is that a Photogenics 1250 DR on the scissors mount in the back?. If so, how can I sinc it with my Godox X1tc trigger system? I tried it but no success. I tried adjusting the light manually after not being to adjust it from the trigger. If it is not the Photogenics light, I apologize.

      Those are 600 watt Photogenic Powerlights. They can be triggered with the Godox a number of ways. I use the $40 Godox reciever which has a hot shoe and a PC port. www.amazon.com/Godox-X1R-C-Channels-Wireless-Transmitter/dp/B016QAK3TU/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?crid=M5NWJ6M7V4O3&cv_ct_cx=godox+receiver&dchild=1&keywords=godox+receiver&pd_rd_i=B016QAK3TU&pd_rd_r=49bb95cc-1e3b-43dd-ac05-39ef033e89c1&pd_rd_w=mr6jH&pd_rd_wg=Gw8RA&pf_rd_p=d027eaac-7531-45fe-a61e-20ae30db06de&pf_rd_r=G69AW0K78PMWYZ0JF27P&psc=1&qid=1590453272&sprefix=Godox+receiver%2Caps%2C169&sr=1-1-70f7c15d-07d8-466a-b325-4be35d7258cc

    Does the tt685n have a continuous light on it Like the V1?

    • @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques
      @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no idea, I'm afraid. the continuous light is on the V1 is next to nothing. Maybe you can see your subject in a dark room. The AD300Pro has a nice modeling light, but it's not adequate or designed as a continuous light source.
      Thanks for watching.

    Hi, can you please make a video with some basic Entry Level DSLR + Kit Lens or Entry Level Prime along with Speedlites to produce same results??? because the camera you were holding in this video, Anyone who can afford that camera with such a huge lense, then we can also afford the High End Lights or Strobes.

    • @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques
      @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea. While the camera in this video has nothing to do with the lesson, we can do a simpler one with our entry level and kit lens that we used for our other "Level One" videos. Thanks for watching!
