I moved from Georgia to Texas in 2007. I was shocked when I realized breakfast tacos were the norm and a biscuit couldn't be found! I called my little old granny back home in North Georgia and begged her to teach me (over the phone) how to make a pan of biscuits. She was reluctant but she finally gave in. I knew I was in trouble when she started the lesson by saying, "Put enough flour in your bowl to make a pan of biscuits." Needless to say, Blackie has it exactly right...closely guarded recipes. Merry Christmas, Blackie!
Agreed, the lost recipies in my family... We almost lost my grandmother's cornbread, but I came across one that was close, remembered a saying about her, added one ingredient and Bingo, we got it back.
What? Where in the blue hello part of Texas did you move to? Trust me, we got more Biscuits here than you can shake a stick at. Big ol’ Cathead Biscuits too!
Hi Blackie. Merry Christmas to you and your family. You say so many things in your videos that bring back wonderful memories of days long past. My dear grandma made the best biscuits I ever put into my pie hole. I have managed to get the taste close, but not the texture. Hers stayed very soft all day long. I never asked her for the recipe, but I would watch her while I had a cup of coffee. I'm pretty sure she knew what I was doing. Also, I was always told to clean my plate, which was not a problem because I was always hungry. I sopped every last morsel out of it. I'm looking forward to the baking videos and all the other ones you come up with. God bless you Blackie.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. I like hearing about your mom's and aunt's recipes. Just like my mom. I would ask her about her recipes and she would tell ya and it would be just the basic ingredients. After the good Lord called her home, I realized what her secret of her cooking was and it was "LOVE". Keep up the good work Blackie and God bless you and your family . Merry Christmas
Thanks for another informative video Your skills, knowledge and determination are amazing. Being able to teach a class during a "Fire Fight" is not an easy thing to carry off.❤❤
Merry Christmas to you & Mrs and all 🎄🏕️✨. As always thanks for the discussion and guidance. I live alone now and most of my cooking or just 'feeding myself' in general is done in a similar manner as how you discuss. My grandmother who could make a dough right on the countertop (pile of dry ingredients, make a hollow in it, put wet into hollow, mix dough in the hollow til it was all just a dough ball, then pat out the dough there on the countertop) told us that her mama (my great grandmother) had a pantry cabinet as you described. The great grandmother's flour bin held 50 lbs or more of flour; and, she could make the dough right there inside the bin without spoiling the whole bin by making the little hollow in the bin and adding the liquid and mixing everything right there.
@bretjohnson6188 To save you watching my video... The measurements or not vital so can be mixed by eye. One third instant mashed potato to two thirds flour. Mix with just enough water to make a stiff dough. I usually get away with a few teaspoons of oil, just enough to stop it sticking. Haven't tried cooking over a hot rock but can't see why it wouldn't work.
Hi Blackie, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺. Thank you for your time to make these videos. You can use the 321 recipwe for making short bread, 3 flour , 2 butter ,1 castor sugar . Mix .roll flat ( will crumble , care taken) bake lightly, can add different spices, in powder form. Use as a guide, flour must be 3 , play around with butter and sugar to get your recipe,. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family.
ran across 2 cinnamon roll recipes on facebook earlry this week. the first has 2 variations, 1-a you use milk & a can of store bought pilsbury rolls, 1-b you change the milk to eggnog. follow normal directions for the rolls. before putting in the oven fill to the top of the rolls with the milk or eggnog. the next one the guy made cinnamon rolls using tortillas as the bread. sliced the tortillas into 1.25 -1.5 inch wide strips. covered the strips with the filling. then rolled up the strips till you have a roll about 2.5 to 3 inches in dia baked in a 350f oven for 25-30 mins, he used a muffin pan to hold the rolls together. in both recipes once out of the oven top as you normally would. had a crazy thought earlier today for the icing. instead of milk use eggnog with the powder sugar. only other thought on this if any leftover keep in the frig. as not sure how eggnog would hold up at room temp for spoilage. either recipe in a canteen cup, 2 rolls at a time, maybe even foil line the cup for easier clean up. oh one more thing, the rolls will not get crusty with liquid in the pan. they stay soft & gooey as the liquid is absorbed by the rolls.
Thank you for this video 🥰 What did i say wrong? That i can't cook at 65+? Wow, I realy learned so much more from you at 65+ years of age then back in the 60's from my mother about cooking. Like you said it was like...you take a little bit of this, a handful of that, and pinches of the other... I didn't learn how to Cook BECAUSE of that! I need exact ingredients and even then i get it wrong sometimes...because of my measuring devices I use! I recently learned thet not every measurement devices are designed for liquid's or dry ingredients. I shared your video with a friend of mine who has the same issues as myself!
I have only made Damper which is a type of bread which is famous in Australia. Basically it’s self raising flour, butter, salt and milk usually mixed with a round ended knife. Baked in a dutch oven or straight into the coals.
Mery Christmas Blackie .I got an aluminum canteen I opened this morning for Christmas It's a China made with a canteen cup and a lid.all in a bug green shoulder holster. Just fo fun..somebody's shootin..but yea it could fit a rabbit and get it cooked goood.ready to eat .just it's heavier than I hoped. Still alot to evaluate and try cooking here at a home camp fire. Enjoy your vidios.wosh you would take that putin 🃏 out. If you get time.then do an announcement lol from his fancy office with his feet sticking out off to the side😅anyway..it's a big cup! Nice lid.im gonna give cornbread a try..looks like a great cup to bake In.take good care of yourself, God bless🎉
Blackie I am really looking forward to you biscuit and bread videos that is something I have been trying to master for years and still am a flop at it and is something I want to learn so bad my great grandmother and grandmother were masters at it but I still can’t even get close to theirs most of the time I have to end up feeding mine to my dog but he seems to love them but I can’t eat them they are so bad will be watching real hard for your videos so thanks in advance
A British fellow who runs a TH-cam channel called Atomic Shrimp (I am not making this up) wrote up and published a spreadsheet that includes all sorts of flours like rye and oats, all kinds of fats, all the ingredients you talked about and more plus yeast. He calls it his bread sheet. It makes it real easy to adjust proportions to make everything from pancake batter through shortcrust to fancy risen breads. Just thought you’d like to know.
I like making flat bread. Flour, salt, and water mixed into a ball. The ball can be coated with oil to keep it from sticking to the bowl while resting. Flatten to a 6 inch disk and cook it on an oiled skillet and use it like a tortilla.
Merry Christmas Blackie. I remember those days. W'ood cook stoves, pie safes, ect... we called the sheet of bread "cakey bread " because you broke off a piece and yes you ate everything that was on you plate. Molasses and butter was dessert sometimes. Question did you ever help making syrup? If so tell your viewers how much work that was. Ask me how i know lol
I don't like "layer" biscuits, especially Grands Flaky layers, the layers create a barrier and the biscuit wont absorb the butter and jelly very good, and when you take a bite it just falls out all over the dang place. I love the regular home style buttermilk biscuits.
Thanks for the forecast! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Hello Blackie Merry Christmas I have just watched Cowboy Kent Rollins make two ingredient biscuits, two cups self raising flour one and a half (ish) cups of heavy whipping cream the ish being dependent on how the dough comes out, I was wondering if canned evaporated milk could substitute for the cream ?
I recently made that two ingredient biscuit and wow they are insanely delicious! It's the fat in the heavy cream that makes it work, I don't think evaporated milk has the same fat content so it wouldn't work the same.
Merry Christmas. So Glad God blessed you and us with your recovery. Still praying.

Ty for simplifying things on the chart
The chart was just great!!!! That was a great visual. Thank yoh so much! Genius.
Merry Christmas Blackie! Looking forward to the biscuits!
My parents gave both my sister and I Hoosier cabinets for wedding gifts 45 yrs. ago. Love em'
Yep. We let one get away when my parents moved in the 80's. Then they got popular again later on.
Great start Blackie. I'm really looking forward to this baking series. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Ohio powdered potato + flour mixed and fryed = potato farls.
Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year to all
That sounds interesting! Can you post ingredient amounts? Are yours deep fat fried or can they be fried on a hot flat rock?

My question is: What is special about HARDwood ashes in particular? Is there a reason that softwood ashes would not work or function as well?
Merry Chrirstmas special out woods. Yeah scout i cook and baker duntch oven.
