Fun fact 03: Most of the tourist thinking that most scenic spots are between Kandy and Ella but, its only the beginning. You can travel to all the way to the Badulla to have more scenic spots. Fun fact 04: If you really want the pictures you can travel to Badulla as most of the tourists get down from Ella, so there are very few people that will interrupt your photos..
The best train ride to travel in Sri Lanka as a tourist is the Ella Odyssey train ride. This is a sightseeing train journey and the train stops at tourist stations like the Nine Arch Bridge and Waterfalls and gets off the train and allows the passengers to take photos at the station for 5 to 10 minutes.

Use the railway map of Sri Lanka and you can cover third of the country with awesome views on country side. Cant beat the Kandy to Ella views but others are beautiful as well. Just buy a ticket and get on the train just to enjoy the ride.

The online tickets are expensive because you get a guaranteed seat. Also if you book in advance in thrid class there will be a guaranteed seat for you. They have separate coaches for the booked tickets
Her advice on train tickets are outright false and dangerous. Someone could seriously lose the opportunity to enjoy the train rides if they follow this advice. Yes, online tickets are expensive as they are "guaranteed reserved seats". You can buy such tickets at the train station only for the same price as online and usually these tickets get sold out weeks before. The cheap tickets are "unreserved" and does not guarantee a seats. You will see lot of travel advice saying these tickets are just fine, THEY ARE NOT (or at least they might not be). They can be ok if the train is not busy but the unreserved coaches get jammed packed with people in certain times of the year (e.g. Adam's peak pilgrimage season, National holidays etc. ). If it is your thing to get packed like sardines with strangers for 7 hours go for it. Its not my cup of tea.
