Vulcan V70 Versus Fracking Trailers...

  • Using our Western Star with a Miller Industries, Vulcan V70 to lift and tow several fracking trailers, frac tanks, from a storage yard to a jobsite. These trailers were not being used for fracking, but for holding water that was having to be pumped out of a ditch. In this video, Kenny and I work together to get the rhythm of how to safely move them, and then I let Kenny take over so I can get back to the shop for other duties. Nothing a little experience and ingenuity can't solve. As I've said, I'm needed more in the office now since Dad died. We are managing. We will continue to go and grow, as he would have wanted us to do. Again, I wish to thank everyone who has expressed their prayers and/or condolences for the death of my Dad. The outpouring of support from my viewers has been tremendous and has helped in this difficult time. May God bless each and every one of you. Also, thank you for your patience. I am still making videos, but I took a couple weeks off-call after my dad passed, so I wasn't doing very many jobs. This is another job trying to get to the new normal without Dad. I will continue to perform jobs and create videos, as long as God allows. Things will be different moving forward. I have to trust that God will guide me and this channel.
Again, a very special thank you to all my viewers, family, and friends who having taken the time to show their support. May God bless and protect you all!!

Being from TX and have worked on the oilfield, I am well versed on the frac tank. Always need to be emptied before moved. No parking brakes on the wheels, when set down, the wheels are actually almost totally off the ground. Use a winch truck with rails on either side of the 5th wheel all the way back to end of frame and hook wire rope through middle section of tubing above king pin and snatch into the 5th wheel.
Hope this helps paint a pic of how they tote them around in the oilfield.

Ron, your statement, "You have clearance, Clarence," reminds me of a job I was on. We were taking carpet tiles out of the locker rooms at work, so the assignments went out, two of the more notable ones were, "Norman the doorman." He held the door open for "Buck the truck driver (push cart)."

I'm pretty sure those trailers can only be pulled empty because they only have one axle if they were full that axle would not support all that weight . They are used to store liquid mostly contaminated on a site and then pumped into a tanker that can handle the weight. I always enjoy your videos and We all know your dad is watching so don't mess up LOL

    • @jawa6306
      @jawa6306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Correct. That and they're heavy like 25,000+lbs empty. Typically they're made with 3/16" or thicker walls. We have a few of them and I can't pick up the nose with our 12k lift, I have to use the gin pole truck.

Some people get them put in spots that is useless. But your right. They should lift it with a crane, but that is 8.5-25k for a 20t crane

these absolutely can not be moved loaded. I use to clean these. They had to be 100% clean to legally move down the road. There not rated for chemical transportation, there are no baffles. They are just a portable holding tank.

Yep you got that wright can only pull empty. All the weight will go to the back once you pick it up and bust the tires.. seen it done.. the landfield use a lot them and we pump out tank Into our trailers..

Ron, I worked at BakerCorp for 20 yrs. The frac tank (right of the unit being towed ) I installed the retro 3” fill tube many yrs ago. That tank was originally used at O’Hare Airport (Chicago) for de-icing fluid. Your video brought back many happy memories - too bad the last CEO destroyed the company. (I’m sure you know the old crowd and watched the changes)

As of recently I discovered a few other towing companies on TH-cam, but there's something about your videos that I prefer the most. I always loved how you emphasize on the safety aspect of your job, not to mention the reasoning behind some of the things you do. These other guys will cut out footage such as the driving and the rigging parts. They explain what they are gonna do but they cut out them doing it haha.
I've always respected and loved our first responders but since I have been watching your videos for I think maybe a year now I have grown to love and respect our tow truck drivers out here as well. Keep up the fantastic work!

Back a few years ago I did repairs and welding on frack tanks. I'm probably not telling you anything you haven't already ready figured out but they only put service brakes on these tanks so they can be moved on the job site with a big front loader or an excavator when empty. Happy New year to you, your family and employees.

I know very little about towing or recovery, so I didn't have any preconceived ideas of what I would be viewing. I like your comment about problem solving-that is much of the reason why I watch your videos. It is fascinating to see your process of figuring out how to do something safely and quickly. Between 8:30 and 9:00 I liked how you worked with Kenny about whether the 5th wheel was secure. You were sure it was, but you still listened to Kenny and checked it yourself. In aviation safety this is called crew resource management (CRM). The fancy name doesn't matter, but listening to and respecting a co-worker like you do is much more important for safety and efficiency than some people think. (It also makes a much nicer workplace!) It is always impressive watching you work and I suspect it is also a testament to your Dad. Happy New Year!

Most of them aren’t set up with parking brakes they have a special brake valve that when the air tank is drained the brakes release and the use service chambers very interesting setup the first few times of having to work on the air systems on them.

It’s best to run a chain on the bar on the very front of the tank, you can pick it and lift. Those tanks are 21k capacity and can only be moved with minimal or empty. I work for Adler Tank Rentals and deal with those on a daily basis. Typically moved with a winch truck or stinger crane truck

Tank has glad hands to connected air lines to control the brakes, there’s a tank in the rear by the axle that holds the air and once the tank is stationary then the brakes can be freed by emptying all the air from the tank so it can be moved on site by a reach forklift or any piece of equipment big enough to lift

My father passed June 10th, 2024. It is difficult to process sometimes. Both of us had the ability to do things that were never done before. Both of us owned our own businesses. Every vehicle I bought, I would get his option on it. I learned from him that if you treat your customers right, jobs will always come your way. Always meet the deadline and the quoted price. I have lost money on a job here and there, but I never lost a job.

This comment has nothing to do with towing. But every time someone talks about the “Western Star” I think of my grandparents. Gammy was very active in Eastern Star and Gampy was a very active Mason. I just enjoy thinking about them and the name of that truck reminds me of them. I don’t know why I think Eastern Star when you say Western Star but there it is!

Great video as always! Always look forward to Fridays and seeing a new one. Especially right now. Been off work on "medical leave" for the past several weeks due to needing a major surgery on my trachea and esophagus. Stay safe, stay warm, and as always, watch your 6 !

Hi Ron, Happy New Year! I worked in the oil patch and they never moved the frac tanks unless they were empty. They would use SA truck with winch and rolling tailboard to hook and unhook the frac tank from the truck.

I've pulled thousands of frac tanks in the gas industry, they hold 500bbls of liquid, 20k gallons, they can handle close to an inch of liquid, depending on tires,

I know you show us all the various aspects of Midwest Truck Sales and Service. I would find your part of the company seems to have the most variety. It seems you all are challenged on a daily basis which always makes work something you can really sink your "teeth in". One of the reasons I enjoyed sales. Trying to resolve a customer's problem was always fun and sometimes there were no ready made answers to a customer problem. I always enjoyed working with our customers. Dealing with all the craziness with upper management could be the most challenging and the most stressful. I think as my former company lost most of us old-timers who really cared about the customer and they started hiring young people that they started losing their way. Today my old company is merely and online company. Most of the "brick and mortar" stores closed in 2015 and by 2020 they were all shuttered.

Hey Ron & Kenny !! Those are pre 1975 trailers & Don't have Spring brakes on them SO you have to go back to the ""OL"" School days of hooking them up which means you have to air the trailer B/4 you even try to hook to the 5th wheel !! When they are aired up the brakes will lockup when the emergency line is disengaged & should hold air for at least 12 mins. as the "OL"" Law states !! Back in the day ,,there were a lot of roll offs as the air leaked off & away the rigs went just like the rig at the rest area you had to go get as the Driver got out of it & DIDN"T set the brakes on either unit !! Remember that ?? Have a good ""NEW YEARS " & Thanks for the memories of "OLD"" !!

Happy, healthy and prosperous new year, Ron, and to all your family and workers.
Those trailer tanks seem to be design AND maintenance impaired, with many hours of tender loving neglect behind them.
I once had a curtain side trailer with load sensing valve failure, so seemed ok on the unladen outrun, but when loaded to the legal limit with Coca Cola for the return, it was a whole 'nuther ball game!
I tagged it INOP on so many levels it wasn't legally drivable without most of the braking system being replaced and a new test certificate obtained. 60,000 lbs trying to push me forward or around every time I even went downhill, never mind braked, was as close as I ever came to walking away and telling the customer to come fetch their **** truck.
I honestly believe that the four palettes I made them remove to keep me weight-legal saved lives, not just my own, that day.

I live and worked in the oilfield. This is a first on moving them! Usually they're moved on a flatbed with a roll bar and winch.
