You’ve given me an awesome idea. I have access to a couple of large tree trunks, but they’re not suitable to Tryon Bonsai. If I approach craft the trunk and put new foliage on them. I could have a nice large trunk pine faster. I love your videos. I’ve learned so much from what you’ve shown. Keep up the videos. Maybe one day I can come and see your garden.
Thank you very much! I hope you have success with that, even though with patience, success is guaranteed in approach grafting! Of course, you are welcome!
Congratulation on the successful graft. Too bad the one pine fell over and ripped the grafts out. Luckily you have plenty of projects. How did the air layering of the hornbeam go?
Thank you! It's 2 weeks now, too soon to tell. The upper part I f the tree looks very healthy and throws the second growth. So hopefully it's developing. We'll see...
@@ArkefthosBonsai Same on mine, canopy looks really good and is actively growing, below the graft there were already some new buds forming that have now become small branches. Lets hope we can both manage to air layer that "difficult to air layer" tree species. As a video idea: separating air layer aftercare (not a lot of videos, just a lot on how to start them) All the best from switzerland
Good signs for your Carpinus as well. Beautiful species to work with, really strong root systems and amazing back budding. I'm having really fun with these trees. I will do a video about airlayer aftercare this autumn! Thank you!
Congratulations, great work. Regarding the new graft, where you graft scotch pine on pinus sylvestris, as far as I know scotch and sylvestris is the same kind of pine. I suspect that the scion is a smaller leaf variety… I can’t think of another way this makes sense.
Thank you Alex! Everything you said is correct. It is sylvestris on sylvestris, the scion is the dwarf variety "Watereri", which grows great in my garden. Though it might make sense, even if I grafted with sylvestris the species and not a dwarf, grafting low is a nice way to save a big trunk that is much overgrown to become a bonsai. Generally a very usifull technique! Cheers!
Έχω επισκεφτεί τα μέρη σου στο παρελθόν, τρομερή ομορφιά. Και την αναδεικνύεις πολύ ωραία στα πλάνα που τραβάς. Awesome video as always! I was just wondering if you want the roostock to invest more energy on the graft shouldnt you chop the top to remove the most auxins?
That is why I pruned a lot of the foliage. This will direct energy to the graft. Definately not time to prune everything above the graft. This would be too drastic and might lead to everything dying. Plus, I would like the top part to thicken the base of the tree more, this season and maybe the next. And will be removed when the graft is established and developed, maybe autumn 2024. Have a great day!
Beautiful seeing Pines living in containers thriving like crazy. Seems you`re at the perfect location to do what you do. Will the nails stay in there after callusing?
Thank you very much! Yes, the nails stay there, but usually, when the time comes to remove the tall trunk, the cut will be below them, so they will be removed with the trunk eventually. Cheers!
Per questo tipo di innesto che hai fatto , infilando il ramo di un altra pianta all’interno del tronco, come faccio a sapere quando tagliare la pianta donatrice?Grazie mille
This takes, most of the times, more than a year, probably even 2 years, but it is 100% successful. You want to see great swelling right where the scion exits the rootstock. When the scion exiting is significantly thicker than the part of the scion entering the graft, then it is succesfull. By then you will probably be able to see the fusion callus between the two trees.
This paste does not prevent any healing or callusing from happening. While the callus forms the paste stretches, a lot. In extreme callusing it becomes thin as a plastic bag and transparent. But in any case, next year this part will be removed and won't be in the finished tree. The paste is there inky to keep the scion from drying the next two weeks...

This is not an experiment. I did not invent it. This is a proper, applied technique, for probably handreds of years. It is actually very successful given the correct amount of time. There is no doubt about that. 9 months ago I uploaded a video of styling a Japanese black pine. On this tree the first branch on the left is grafted and the second branch (on the back) is approach grafted with this technique, back in 2015. Cheers!

Lovely 🙏💚 What kind of pines are these?
Thank you! If you mean the rootstocks, the big ones, are Pinus nigra. My favourite rootstock. Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsai yes the rootstock and the scions. Black pine root stock is great, very strong. Are the scions also black pine?
No, the scions where sylvestris and parviflora. A bit better foliage for bonsai. Cheers!

One doubt, the healing paste that you put on the last pine, will it not prevent the healing lip from closing?
