  • In this week’s episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” savor the exquisite details of “Comtesse Daru,” the only painting in the Frick’s collection by renowned French neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David. Join Curator Aimee Ng as she delves into the history of how this lovely, intimate portrait came to be painted by an artist largely known for producing monumental works in the service of Napoleon. This week’s complementary cocktail, the Orange Blossom, is inspired by the orange-blossom tiara that adorns the sitter's head.

Such incredible detail both in the painting and the explanation - these Friday nights have come to mean so much to me during this pandemic - thank you to the Frick for bringing this into our homes.

Such a wonderful presentation (and how wonderful to see beautiful Aimee again). I do agree, an apple blossom cocktail with Comtesse Daru would be wonderful. I can imagine her delight with the ingredients. Her story (and 12 children) amaze me how I wish we knew more about her. The painting is so beautiful, I completely understand why she loved it and the fun she had sitting for it as a surprise for her husband. Thank you Aimee for a wonderful episode.

Superb episode. I was eager to know more about David's work and life and voilá The Frick choses to present this intimate work by him, which differs from the big scenes I have seem so far. The comtesse's clothes brings to mind those from Jane Austen's novel characters. Looking forward to visiting the Frick this again very soon!

The way you drew this arc from Fragonard to David pre-revolution to David post revolution, to Napoleon to Daru to Stendhal to the comtesse was masterful. And then you drew a virtual heart around Alexandrine. Brilliant, Aimee, just brilliant.

Truly, the Comtess was not a beauty, but via painting, all the details had shown she was a Rich and Elegant member of Frech high society! No wonder she was pleased with the artwork herself! Quite a nice portrait by David! 🤓🤔

I've seen this painting many times, but I never appreciated it so much as when I listened to your description and history. Now, at last, I prefer the Comtesse Daru to the Ingres, which I wouldn"t have said before.

Thank you, Aimee, for this fascinating and engaging exploration of David's exquisite portrait. I'm a huge fan of David, he's my favourite French painter, and while I'm very familiar with his better-known works I knew nothing about this portrait so I enjoyed this video immensely. I assume that the countess is adorned with orange blossom as a sign of conjugal happiness. I'm reminded of the line in Brideshead Revisited, when Charles is asked about his reunion with his wife: "...how did it feel meeting Celia again after two years? I know I should feel indecently bridal. But Celia's never quite got the orange blossom out of her hair, has she?"

I learned if you're the Daru's connection to Stendhal first from Stendhal and was delighted to see their pendant portraits at the Met, never making the connection with the much more spectacular portrait at the Frick. Stendhal was always falling in love with unavailable women. But he did write the Chartreuse... by some thought to be the greatest novel ever.

Bravo, Aimee! You are amazing and thoughtful, as usual. If, by any chance, would be contest for the best presenter of "Cocktails with Curator", all our voices will be with you (even if you
"politicizing" something!). Sorry, that your photo in the NY Times on 02/26 did not properly reflected your charm and intellect. If you're allow me one small comment about your lovely last lecture: Stenhdal, without any doubt, was on the greatest French writers, and for the art lovers (like us!), he must be particular interesting as a writer, who first described "the contemplation of sublime beauty' visiting one of the Florence museum. Someone, who was lucky to experience it, should know that it officially called "Stendhal's syndrome".

Comtesse Daru could be the ancestor of the British actress Anna Chancellor. She looks so human despite the luxurious garments. Do hope, Ms Ng, that the mahoghany didn't come from the French (slave) colony of Martinique; no, I'm sure you would have mentioned it....Hope Mr Dalvit is well, and thank you for the video.

A wonderful presentation! Thank you, Ms Ng!!!! I must add, though, that it is too bad that these marvellous paintings are now doomed to be shown against grey walls that are so different from the richly coloured walls for which they were painted. Everything gets ruined by "designers" these days.

Perhaps Stendahl’s long infatuation with the rather plain (but appealing) Comtesse Daru is the result of “crystallization”-a term he used to describe the process by which we come to cherish even the unattractive qualities of the ones we love.
