I knew a person who had worked in the fishing industry in Nova Scotia' Canada. He said that while Canadian fisheries were closed down in the 90s, other countries were still allowed to continue to fish Canadian waters that Canadian fisheries could not. My questions regarding stopping the West Coast fisheries from fishing the waters off of the B.C. coastline, are: Which countries will still be permitted to fish those waters? With the B.C. fisheries' boats being gone, who will be out there monitoring the activities no longer permitted? Will there be policing controls in place to make sure the waters are not being poached by anyone? Or does Canada have agreements with other countries they must still honor? If certain countries which are profoundly overpopulated fish Canadian waters, they would potentially wipe out the fish stocks anyway. This has happened all over the world. Is Canada next?

I'm going to teach you a couple of things... A typical chinook salmon lives 4 years and travels probably 10,000kms. Any salmon species caught mid summer off the BC coast aren't 'canadian' fish...almost every chinook salmon caught before September around here will be from Oregon's columbia river hatchery program. It's not even a quarter as simple as you think. This year Alaska took 3x more sockeye than the Canadian quota in BC...ask yourself why the sockeye run on the Fraser was tragic this year? Don't look at China first, look at DFO mismanagement and the US.

I was looking through the coments, I remember the cod fishery being manipulated on the east coast. Canadians lost jobs so the French and Spanish got to fishing as normal. Hypothetically the west coast marine harvesting is being faced out, could it be to allow Trudeau to let the Chinese fishery access to the most un protected water in the world to do there own harvesting of Canadian jobs.
I grew up in NB. I remember when Canadian fishermen took video of the international boats in our waters, taking all the cod they could pull up. I also remember those fishermen being told that they were wrong about the locations of those international ships by the governments.

because they shut down several farms a few years ago. open pen fish farms decimate local populations by spreading sea lice and other infections. the problem is that pressure and farming harms natural populations. the solution is in land farming (that's less profitable) and resting natural populations. people will lose jobs, so that's probably never going to happen. I knew a person who had worked in the fishing industry in Nova Scotia' Canada. He said that while Canadian fisheries were closed down in the 90s, other countries were still allowed to continue to fish Canadian waters that Canadian fisheries could not. My questions regarding stopping the West Coast fisheries from fishing the waters off of the B.C. coastline, are: Which countries will still be permitted to fish those waters? With the B.C. fisheries' boats being gone, who will be out there monitoring the activities no longer permitted? Will there be policing controls in place to make sure the waters are not being poached by anyone? Or does Canada have agreements with other countries they must still honor? If certain countries which are profoundly overpopulated fish Canadian waters, they would potentially wipe out the fish stocks anyway. This has happened all over the world. Is Canada next?

A typical chinook salmon lives 4 years and travels probably 10,000kms.
Any salmon species caught mid summer off the BC coast aren't 'canadian' fish...almost every chinook salmon caught before September around here will be from Oregon's columbia river hatchery program.
It's not even a quarter as simple as you think. This year Alaska took 3x more sockeye than the Canadian quota in BC...ask yourself why the sockeye run on the Fraser was tragic this year?

I was looking through the coments, I remember the cod fishery being manipulated on the east coast. Canadians lost jobs so the French and Spanish got to fishing as normal. Hypothetically the west coast marine harvesting is being faced out, could it be to allow Trudeau to let the Chinese fishery access to the most un protected water in the world to do there own harvesting of Canadian jobs.

I grew up in NB. I remember when Canadian fishermen took video of the international boats in our waters, taking all the cod they could pull up. I also remember those fishermen being told that they were wrong about the locations of those international ships by the governments.

because they shut down several farms a few years ago. open pen fish farms decimate local populations by spreading sea lice and other infections. the problem is that pressure and farming harms natural populations. the solution is in land farming (that's less profitable) and resting natural populations. people will lose jobs, so that's probably never going to happen. I'm a guide in Alberta I've been following this for a decade. i hate Justin. i do my part by just not buying salmon.

It was Harper that courted Chinese investors that allowed them to weigh in on sovereign Canadian policy for 31 years. FIPA. And allowed disease from farming salmon to decimate wild Pacific salmon stocks. Then prevented testing in Canada for contagious genetic diseases and sold these diseased fish in grocery stores. Not to mention the original muzzling of scientists that the corporations now demand of their figureheads.

the over fishing was caused by big company boats and was not caused by the local fishermen in NFLD, most of them was supported by the government who destroyed the government by selling out the fisheries to big company. same thing is now happening in Nova Scotia with big lobster company clearwater.
I really hope we bulk up our maritime patrol. Live in St John’s currently and from lobster country in NS. I would love to be a part of this industry, but i do worry about this.
