  • In this video, I discuss the conditioning to my programming for Spartan Ultra Marathon training. I cover the components that make up conditioning, an example training week, and provide pointers/tips at the end for you to take action on right away.

Don’t need the music, I’m trying to focus on what you are saying!

I've completed a few of ultras. A North Carolina, South Carolina, and Killington. My advice.
First make sure you have time to train and look at your physicality are you coming off the couch at 40 and have family obligations or 20 and still in college with tons of free time. It will determine how long you should train before attempting it.
    Second sign up.
Third keep track of how much you spend for the race, shoes, race fees, clothing, hotel room, travel expenses, and etc. it'll be close to a grand if not more so its motivation to finish.
Forth study up on the course. An Ohio, Carolina, or Texas race is flat so fucus on running. You can literally run a 10 minute mile pace for the first lap and then walk, snack, and enjoy the second half. Killington or big bear focus on long hikes with steep hills and stair masters with short half mile running intervals in between walking. You will have to run parts of Killington to reach cut off times but that can be the downhills and few spots when its flat but mainly focus on being able to go up and down steep hills for hours. And quickly transition to running. Running to train for Killington won't cut it. Just like marching up and down hills isn't the best strategy for the falt races.
Fifth carry heavy stuff and work on grip strength.
    Sixth don't skip leg day.

Very good and informative video. Can you please give me an example of the hills training? Does it have the structure of the intervals (800 meters + 800 meters) or is it just trail running for 10 miles?
