Here's another cause for a cough. I'm not sure if there is any relation between this and cough variant asthma. This is how it works. Coughing for any reason whatever, even swallowing a drink the wrong way, irritates the throat, which causes a tickle that induces more coughing, which causes more irritation, which causes more coughing. This is a vicious cycle. I'm not a medical professional. I'm someone who has had this syndrome since being a teenager. For me, typically, once this gets started, it gets worse and worse until there's medical intervention.

I’ve had a chronic cough for several months. I can feel fine for several hours and then suddenly something sets it off and can turn into wheezing at times. Turns out it’s GERD related. The number one thing that has helped is weight loss. I had gradually gained weight over the years but I have lost over 20 pounds in the last few months and still losing. Having less fat around my abdominal area has greatly improved both the GERD and cough. Other things that have helped greatly - sleep on my left side with upper body propped up, eat last meal in afternoon or early evening, avoid acidic foods later in the day, eat more fruits and vegetables and high fiber foods like oatmeal, avoid snacking between meals, avoid drinking liquids right before bedtime, good posture especially when sitting (I put a pillow behind my mid-back when sitting on the couch to prevent sitting back and slouching), walk 1 hour daily, avoid caffeine and fried and fatty foods which worsens GERD.... Also when I bend over at the waist I immediately begin coughing or cough soon afterwards, so I am conscious of finding ways not to bend over and to pick things up by bending my knees and keeping upper body upright as much as possible. Very few coughing episodes now.

Thank you so much for these videos; especially Chronic Cough, PFT etc. I've experienced almost annual Bronchial Pneumonia, or Bronchitis and Chronic Coughing lasting 3 - 4 months. 2 prescriptions of Antibiotics this year (Jan. and Mar. 2015). I am resisting family pressure and the traditional medicine approach to go for a third. I've joined a private clinic which practices an integrated medicine approach and we're investigating the 3 pronged causality outlined in your Chronic Cough video. I, at last, have hope. Thank you again.

Thank you so much. I can't explain how helpful this was. I went to several doctors and they examined my chest for asthma and they examined me for GERD on multiple occasions. But they could never figure out what was wrong with me. Your vid explained the symptoms and how to treat them. It's a "HUGE!!!!!!!!!!" relief. After treating the symptoms the cough is just gone. I can't express how much relief and the peace of mind that I have. After treatment I felt exhausted. I had a cough ever since I was very little. People used to stare and get annoyed by me. It was torture. I hated myself because I couldn't stop. Every "Doctor" was useless other than my current Doctor. It's a dramatic change. I can live.

Good job. I've suffered for almost 3 months with a chronic cough after aspiration. The initial infection was cleared after a few days of antibiotics, but the cough never left. This video shed light on why my doctor ordered a bariatric test (to test for GERD), put me on Singulair (which can actually worsen GERD), and started me on asthma pills, even though I have no wheezing,. It all makes more sense now!

A chronic cough improves if it is the coughing kind of asthma such as I had and my father had, eliminating dairy eliminated my asthma, and therefore my cough. I still have some allergies which means my nose runs more than some people but I no longer have any wheezing either. The amount of phlegm has been greatly reduced. Additionally removing dairy improved my skin, reduced arthritis and ended my lifelong battle with constipation. I use Soy milk now. I have also become vegan, best thing for my health. The arthritis which remained after getting off of dairy, has been reduced so that I am not spending up to 4 months per year in a wheelchair. Now I may get sore, but it does not last long, several hours vs. several weeks. My symptom of soreness is controlled by taking turmeric and works better than MoveFree.
When I had asthma, a pump or albuterol delivered by a nebulizer did not help my breathing. I eat as little processed food as I can. Limit it to like once a week.

Paula Steroids and all the drugs he suggested will work for a while and then it becomes chronic. You need to deal with the allergic substance Netipot with salted water and breathing exercises are the only long term solution The abstinence of food for 3 hours is helpful. Eat a whole food plant based diet helps and no snacking or intermittent fast

My husband has had a chronic dry cough for more than 10 years-I had his GI do EDG, and a pulmonary doctor was astounded by his incredible pulmonary level of fitness during PFT. He is a big cyclist, takes no medications at age 58 and has the BP of a professional athlete. They ended up telling us his cough was “neurogenic.” I still don’t agree with this diagnosis. It means they can’t find a real diagnosis and if he gets sick I’m going to be livid.

Thank you for your explanation. I do have a non-stop and non-deep coughing triggered only when the temperature drops below 65F often when I am sitting. It often starts with non-deep tickling feeling (just where the trachea splits) leading to the compelling desire to cough. It's often a short cough but at times it goes on and on with intermittent pauses. It stops when I move around and do some physical work. I am based in Belgium and would really appreciate if you PROMPTLY recommend any simple relief medication. Thanks, Paul

GERD-related chronic cough can often be caused by sleep apnea. The sphincter at the top of the stomach doesn't close properly if you're not properly asleep. Treating your sleep apnea with a CPAP can often cure the GERD and the cough overnight, even without weight loss.

W My chronic cough was called by the vagel nerve this subject is not covered by this doctor on this video. But if you don’t get anywhere with what he is telling us and I tried all those things I would highly suggest that you check the vagal nerve. My allergist who treated me for asthma cough for eight years finally told me it was my vagal nerve when I was getting ready to leave his practice because we were moving. There are many videos regarding the vagal nerve on TH-cam. My best results came from no white flour, no chocolate, ice on the back of my neck for 20 minutes twice a day, and gabapentin 300 mg prescription at night. Along with vagal nerve exercises. This nerve is also called Vagus nerve

another thing that can causes gerd at night is if you are on c-pap. I tried everything, tilting the bed AND a wedge, not eating 6 hours before bed, cut out all sugar, caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods. even switched to protein shakes for dinner. nothing worked. then my friend suggested I sleep with my neck bent chin to chest. cured in ONE night. its worth noting I had a sleeve gastrectomy, but didn't really have a problem until recently, about 3 years after the fact.

I'm under the asthma branch. I've had my chronic cough at least 1-2 times a year for about a decade now and after taking an allergy and MC test, no obvious trigger was found. I'm usually given an albuterol inhaler to subdue the cough. Most of the time it works, but I have to avoid either being out in dry/frigid air or exerting myself when it's at its worst.

Why take PPI if it will only be for shirt-term? Because I read where serious side effects include kidney disease, fractures, infections and vitamin deficiencies, but these are very rare and are generally associated with long-term use (using these products for more than a year). And when it's stopped, there can be a bad rebound effect...no fun. Why can't synthetic drugs be created to effectively treat a problem and have no ugly side effects? Why?

Hello Doctor. So what if my father is on an Ace inhibitor and has a chronic cough. What do we substitute his medication with?

    • @catmom1322
      @catmom1322 4 ปีที่แล้ว

There are many choices Dad can discuss with his doc that are not ACE Inhibitors, & therefore do not cause the cough. Choices include beta-blockers, alpha-blockers, vasodilators, combination medications, diuretics, & some not easily classified meds.

@CarmineFragione I had my asthma going for 5/months now it might sound crazy to you but I think the main reason is because our pet shed so much that I inhale its fur and triggers asthma and allergys any treatment for this?

My husband has had a chronic cough for over 30 years. If he gets a cold or flu he coughs non stop all day long. It’s horrible for him but it is also horrible and embarrassing for me as everyone asks me what is he doing for his cough. We can’t go out as it is so loud and anti-social.

So hello guys, I really don't know if this is chronic cough but it seems like it. I have been diagnosed of Mild Tubercolosis last 2 or 3 years ago and with meds I got cleared from it. But it resulted to unecessary coughing. We went back and my doctor said It was left out/excess phlegm so she gave me an inhaler. I used it but suddenly I got Bell's Palsy so I had to stop using my inhaler because it's hard and the half of my face was numb. Meds were given to me and one of them is Corticosteroids. Due to drinking them my unecessary coughing went away. So I decided to stop using the inhaler after I recovered from my Bell's palsy. I didn't experience unecessary coughing after a couple of months. Then after that it went back and today I think it worsens because I cough almost a minute or two. Any advice please? I really want to get rid of this.

My elderly sister has had a chronic cough for 8 years and has had every test in the book to try and find out what's causing it. The doctors still don't know why!

I have also a problem with cronical cough, are almost 3 months since the cough is every day , is coming in waves without mucus just dry cough.
My Gp doesn't know why i still cough, he put some many antibiotics in me , nothing worked, tried to put me steroids also didn't work also.
The only thing that helps me sleep in the night is nebuliser before going to sleep.
But I don't want to depend on nebuliser all my life. So the xr didn't find anything and also the blood test nothing.

I've had a chronic cough for 2 years. I finally buckled down and went to the doctor. I was prescribed an inhaler and a nasal spray. Those, I imagine, are to differentiate whether it is allergies or asthma. I return in a month to see whether or not they work.
