It’s not a battle between the EU and the UK. The UK negotiated this. The DUP had their chance to mould policy. They did a frankly terrible job.

AND if you follow opinion polling for the Northern Ireland Assembly election of 2022, Sinn Féin is polling higher than the DUP for the first time in Northern Ireland's history, who's replacing the DUP for the right in the North? The TUV. Not to mention the demographics shift, which in the 2021 census is expected to show a Catholic majority, for the first time in NI's history. A change is coming to NI, more than likely reunification within 10-20 years.

@PatchesRips Uh whataboutery! Yep, that's fine that you didn't realise. A whole host of unelected leaders that make decisions on behalf of their colonies! Their attempts at forcing freedom of movement on the poorest really highlights that!
Now your whataboutery aside, the undemocratic EU and its attempts at threatening northern ireland by invoking article 16, thoroughly failed, thanks to our government standing up to them and forcing them to double down. As a northern Irishman i just got my vaccine yesterday. No doubt you'll be very upset about this, i mean whats the EU doing right now as we speak? ah yes. Blocking australia from getting vaccines to their most at risk people... lovely bunch.

When Sammy Wilson said that "The people of Northern Ireland didn't want this" he was speaking about the loyalist protestant people of Northern Ireland. He was completely disregarding the nationalist catholic population as did a former loyalist prime minister of Northern Ireland Basil Brook when he told his party conference "I have never employed a catholic, I will never employ a catholic and I urge you to do the same". You will never hear this mentioned in the British media. Why?? Loyalists have had privilege and power in Northern Ireland since it's inception. Loyalists will do their utmost to hold on to their privelaged position. They will even start the 'troubles' up again to hold on to it. (As they did the last time). The British media are complicit in this. You will notice that there were no interviews with the other 50%of the population who were promised in an International agreement (The Good Friday Agreement) that there would never again be a border on the Island of Ireland. Which 'will' happen if the loyalists get their way.

Plus European unity isn't a bad thing. The commission is only as Authoritarian as they are because they have to deal with people stuck in the past.
Believe me, I use to support Ireland leaving the EU. You either have a choice between an independent small nation that is absolutely dominated by the US and China, or be part of something much bigger than can stand up to them. Shame on Channel 4 for reporting on this from the misleading standpoint that it is somehow a battle between Northern Ireland and the EU. It is not. It is an internal battle between Northern Ireland unionists and the UK government. Concluding the report with the pronouncement that "The EU says the protocol is here to stay" is very provocative, as it suggests the EU has imposed the NI Protocol on the UK and is now saying NI unionists had better get used to it. The EU never even proposed the NI Protocol as an option. It was Johnson's government that came up with it after it decided not to accept Theresa May's option which was to avoid an internal border by keeping the UK within the EU's single market.
If the EU has one major flaw at the moment it is that it does not counter these misrepresentations of its role - made by the UK government but increasingly by the UK media - in a clear and concise manner, and state the truth behind all these false accusations. The mainstream UK media - including the Guardian and BBC - seem to be progressively going rogue by twisting the facts in these reports to suit an increasingly nationalist UK bias and a protectionist outlook. Their refusal to report the EU's steps to control its vaccine exports as a reaction to the UK's hoarding of 100 million vaccines before allowing any to leave the country, was just another example of this misleading reporting of events. When a country's mainstream media starts joining the gutter press in its misleading dissemination of news you just know the country is past the point of no return.

The GFA is far better for peace than the Anglo Irish Agreement where the measures introduced in the AIA voted through in both the Uk and Irish parliaments did nothing (and in truth were never going) to stop all the bloodshed in Northern Ireland and bombing on both sides of the Irish sea.
Nobody thought about a future Brexit when the GFA was signed. And quite rightly so. It is despicable for the brextremists to abolish it just so they/you can get exactly what they/you want.
Less than 20% of the electorate who voted, voted for Johnson's internal market bill intended to accommodate s Trump trade deal that would rip up the GFA.

When the Englishman gets fed up with his old dog he will take it outside and put it down.
Funny a dog will remain Loyal to the day it's put to sleep he will happily follow his master, tail wagging to his ultimate demise, the dog was good company when the Englishman needed him for bloodsports , Killing rabbits , chasing hares and so forth . But times change and the Englishman has out grown his lust for blood and the kill. This behaviour is no longer excepted amongst the gentile class he associates with.
His poor old dog knows no different because that's what he was trained to do. He ran, chased and killed when his master instructed and was a good servant through the years . But these days he can't be controlled he bites to much and Is unpredictable in a safe predictable World. As they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. The TUV. Not to mention the demographics shift, which in the 2021 census is expected to show a Catholic majority, for the first time in NI's history. Samuel Olaogun Firstly, the name of my country is Ireland (if you are speaking in English) or Éire (if you are speaking in Irish). Ireland has a written constitution, Bunreacht na hÉireann. It can be amended only by the people of Ireland in referendum. The leadership/government of Ireland will not decide on this issue.
Secondly, Ireland has already suffered economically from Brexit and has had to make significant investment in mitigating measures, e.g. direct shipping routes to mainland EU. It has absolutely no obligation whatsoever to clear up the British government's mess in Northern Ireland.
Thirdly, for Ireland a "united Ireland" will mean major upheaval, enormous cost and a very real risk of violence. Some of us remember the extremism and the violence the last time...and we're not going back. There may be a united Ireland in the future but the conditions must be right. The Irish electorate will not be bullied into voting against their own interests.
Finally, if you're going to criticise the Irish government and lecture Ireland about what it should or should not do with its own independent sovereign state, it is entirely reasonable for Marc Vincent to ask what part of the island you are from, Ireland or the UK.
