Recasting old characters for new movies will always be superior to using some uncanny valley de-aging CGI and this movie is a prime example of that.

@@richrelaxes1154Indeed. Once the uncanny valley has been fully bridged ..imagine AI will eventually (soon?) be able to churn out 100 different sequels to anything in minutes. The idea of actors pretending on a set will be a quaint memory, and movies will become entirely personal according to our wishes/algorithms. I loved the first one, and I loved this one (watched the director's cut version). It was a really solid conclusion to a story that I didn't know I needed a conclusion for.
I especially loved that the movie tackled Danny's fear of turning into his dad on two levels: real (the struggle with alcoholism) and the supernatural (being trapped by the overlook, and turning on someone he cares about). And then it ended with him finally being able to look at his mom again, the way she was. A very touching ending.

This a movie where their is significant value in watching the Director's Cut. It does a lot more in terms of understanding the abilities of those with powers. It expands the story in a highly engaging way.

I loved Doctor Sleep far more than The Shinning". Kubrick was one of the greats without question but with The Shinning I dont think he quite understood what Stephen King telling a story about. He in some ways leaned into the wrong aspects of the story.
What I found amazing about the story in Doctor Sleep is how it was able to incorporate Kubrick's adaptation into it by re-contexualized things not retconning or pretending the Shinning didn't exist. I gained a greater appreciation for The Shinning after watching the Director's cut of Doctor Sleep.
One of the most interesting aspects of how Doctor Sleep used Kubrick's adaptation is that when Stephen King watched it 40 years of hate & anger about what Kubrick did with his story melted away. For the first time Stephen King had an appreciation for what Kubrick did. While some may say the passage of time & death of Kubrick allowed King to soften or get over how he felt nowadays rather than having anything to do with Doctor Sleep emphatically I can say that is not the case. The fact is in every interview that Stephen King was asked about Kubrick or The Shinning up until he was able to screen Doctor Sleep he never wavered about his disdain. Only after seeing Doctor Sleep did he change his opinion.

He made one of my favorite horror movies ever, Hush, and all his television shows (especially The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass) are stellar. While I agree that this is a much more "conventional" movie compared to the first one, I think that stylistic difference actually works really well with Danny's overall character arc. In the first movie Danny is a young child with barely any comprehension of his gifts or his situation, and the movie's bizarre dreamlike vibe reflects that perspective (along with the perspective of his deeply-unwell father). In this movie Danny's grown substantially more self-aware, and gained way more understanding of his situation, and the movie's more grounded, lucid style reflects that.

While I loved The Shining, I LOOOOOVED Doctor Sleep. Like Terminator 2 and The Raid 2, Doctor Sleep managed to keep a lot of elements from its predecessor and elevate them even more in fresh and inventive ways.
Hallorann gets axed (quite literally) in such a lame way in the first film , but in this one, they managed to give him more depth and charm.
Yea, we all knew Billy was going to die, but they made him one of the MVPs of the film. He helped Danny with his addiction, gave him work, a place to stay, helps him find a missing child, and even help him essentially take out all of the bad guys in a single operation.
    This film was amazing!

I still prefer The Shining, both the book and movie. Creating a sequel to one of the most iconic works in the horror genre is a tall order, and what we got was pretty cool. Getting to see Danny as an adult is interesting; aside from growing up in psychic powers, he had to contend with alcoholism, the same issue that plagued his father. Alcoholism is something Stephen King knows all too well (it was a major factor in The Shining), so it's rather telling that he wrote one of his most famous characters overcoming it and attending AA meetings in a sequel. This movie adaptation is fine for what it is, but it left out or changed a lot of details for the sake of pacing. There's more time spent with Rose's group, and what individual skills they had to contribute. It also examines of how logistically hard it would be to operate as a stealthy band of ancient psychic vampires. They have an extensive support system behind the scenes, but that doesn't help if there's a dwindling amount of Shiners in the country. Flying overseas is off the table because of all the post-9/11 security, and even going down to Mexico would bring them too much attention. Abra is even _more_ savage in the book as well. There are lots of other details, but I don't want to spoil anything in case you read it.

I think isolation is the underlying antagonist of both movies. The baseball boy, the little girl at the lake, and the push; all isolated. The isolation at the Overlook hotel caused Jack's vulnerability to the dark entities. Wendy and Danny's every day isolation made them easier for Jack to abuse at home. Jack's isolation from humanity made him a total d-bag and incapable of properly using his shine. Rose's isolation from her spiritual wolf pack and getting her into that isolated environment at the Overlook made it possible for her to be brought down. Abra was ostracized by her peers, but she had a connection to her parents, and a desire to be connected to people around her. It wasn't until Danny was able to connect to Billy and his recovery group that he was able to use his shine to do good.
Also, when you said "Billy's the greatest guy ever, He's going to die. That's a shame." I had to pause for ten minutes to LMAO

I loved The Shining even though I was disappointed in many of the changes from the book. I enjoyed Doctor Sleep more. As you said, even though it had a longer run time, it felt shorter. I liked that they were able to bring Halloran back since he didn't die in the book, and they did in a way that didn't feel too forced or cheese. Also, they brought the original book ending to this movie. Ewan McGregor was fantastic, as was the entire cast. Even Rose. You might recognize her from most (if not all) of the Mission Impossible movies and as the big bad in Men in Black 2. I really loved that Danny found his place being able to give peace to those as they were about to die and they considered him to be a "doctor." As if "Doc" was foreshadowing his calling.

Overall, I liked it, but I still think I prefer Kubrick's. Any Stephen King book that deals heavily with telepathy (and there are more than a few) tends to lose some of its potency in the adaptation. (don't know if you've read it, but Dreamcatcher is a great example of this). Usually what's lacking is the budget and/or technology to represent the "dialogue" visually (and I'll admit, I've never been crazy about Kubrick's choice to not deal with it at all, but like it or not, he managed to create a whole other monster). No complaints about that here, aside from feeling like they may have leaned on the effects a bit too heavily. What really tips the scales for me is Rose. She's the only embodied adversary in these movies if you don't count Jack, and to be fair, the actress had a lot on her plate. I just didn't particularly care for the performance. A character like that will always be way scarier in your imagination.

So not only have I watched both The Shining and Doctor Sleep, but I read both books as well. In my opinion The Shining is a trash movie, especially when compared to the book. I understand book adaptations aren’t always going to be the greatest, but there was a lot of important stuff from the book that never made it to the movie. I mean even Stephen King himself hates that movie, and was disappointed in how the story was handled. Lol Now Doctor Sleep on the other hand I feel was handled a lot better. There were still some things from the book I wish made it, particularly how Rose and the others were suppose to look when being viewed using the shining. But over all I was really happy with the movie.

I fucking love The Shining, that’s not a knock on Doctor Sleep at all, I thought they did a brilliant job with that and Flanagan is up there with my favorite horror directors working today. The Shining is just tough to beat.
Anyway, when I first watched the Shining, it became one of my favorite horror movies. The story is so in depth, insane, and it has such an element of ambiguity. The theories alone are amazing. You could spend days watching theory videos. Everything is is amazing, acting, storytelling, cinematography. Just brilliant.
As for Dr Sleep, I really enjoyed the sequel. Good Villain, amazing visuals and some awesome storytelling. But, it ruins The Shining for me. See, I would love Doctor Sleep if it was it's own thing. Not with The Shining. But, the fact it explains literally everything from that film ruins the ambiguity for me. We know the hotel is now a place to try and eat the shine that people have. The way the hotel is presented in the movie is much more average haunted house with horrors. It just ruins it for me. So I watch Doctor Sleep as it's own thing and The Shining as it's own thing, they are so different but both so good in their own ways.
The hotel in the shining is extremely eerie, mysterious, filled with ghosts with weird intentions and of course "you were always the caretaker" adding to elements of mystery.
