I would hesitate to travel anywhere out of the places I know well in the US now, I fear they are populated with severe danger. 🇬🇧
I agree with your concern. The tolerance of violence from both political sides is wrong. Although most has come from the Left, both sides are responsible. The best approach is a strong zero tolerance of violence or any tolerance, rationalization or blame shifting to support political violence.

I read her book when it was first published nearly a year ago. It's hard to believe how much has happened and how much more divided the country has become since then. We are definitely heading in the wrong direction. It's like watching a disaster unfold. It feels like slow motion but at the same time a lot is happening on a near daily basis. “How Civil Wars Start and How to Stop Them" An excellent book. I think a civil war is less likely in fully autocratic regimes, as the pressures on the people are very intense, the opposition is either absent or largely suppressed and has little strength to resist. However, in anocracies, the ruling and opposition forces are almost equal in terms of election results and vote rates. Thus, when the government resorts to violence to intimidate opponents, it is more likely that the opposition will respond, so civil war is more likely. Only I would disagree that she calls the instigators of violence as "ethnic entrepreneurs", should be "ethnic provocateurs".
Watching from Australia I have become increasingly worried about a civil war in the States. Internal unrest at this time is dangerous for the entire world not just in the US. Over the past four years we have been watching a dictator become more and more powerful until America's democracy is under real threat...interesting interview but worrying that Barbara F. Walter cant stop from smiling.

The best self-protection for any group feeling that they are in danger of becoming a disaffected minority should be to vigorously guarantee that all citizens are treated equally regardless of minority status. Gerrymandering and voter suppression aimed at establishing minority rule are inherently unjust and risk a backlash.
The real threat is the 1% who own both parties and who will use the threat of an imaginary civil war to grab more and more control.

It is absolutely true that online voting can be made secure. However, in the current climate, there is no way that change can be made in the near future. It will happen eventually. I imagine FRS to confirm who logged on and a one-use password for the vote may be the way to go, but right now the deniers are convinced in-person paper ballots are the only secure vote. Of course, this is not secure and is often used by autocracies in less affluent countries to maintain power.

This is why the Democrats have won 7 of the last 8 presidential elections by popular vote & because of outsourcing of industrial jobs over the last 40 years many white voters lost their middle class existence and are angry and feel they are being replaced . This has brought them to doubt election results, attempt to halt immigration, attempt to suppress voting rights and to use violence to intimidate certain voters and election workers & of course attempt an insurrection .

A week ago, I turned in my absentee ballot because I didn't want to feel the hostile vibes around the poles on election day that I felt during the primaries. I'm 67 years old and frankly, those were "vibes" I never felt before. I was aware of those patrolling the ballot drop boxes with guns. They would have a hard time with that here. Our ballot drop boxes double for utility bills and property tax payments.
WOW! Ballot boxes also for utility payments and property taxes! What a great idea! Ours (in Seattle) are just ballot boxes. We have 87 this year! Compare that to a whole Texas county with just one😢

I am your age and you know what? I went at 7AM to the community center and the little old ladies way younger than me made me feel right at home. Even when the machine wouldn't take my voter card. Probably my fault but they didn't make me feel bad about it. Got my sticker and walked out in under 10 minutes. The hate you feel is self generated.
