The only frustration I have is how he glosses over that nuclear powered submarines are pretty much better than conventional subs in almost every way: longer range, faster top speed, greater submersion time, quieter operation, less emissions and larger size leading to better armament. Conventional subs are at odds with large sections of Western military doctrine, which is why they are being phased out in favor of nuclear.

I saw Jordan at a grocery store in Sydney yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the checkout was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Excuse me, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the checkout. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

3:13 - CORRECTION (AND ITS A BIG ONE): we are actually spending up to $368 billion for AUKUS up to 2053. The AUKUS program (build and sustainment) still has another 40+ years to run. When you factor in inflation AUKUS is a ONE TRILLION DOLLAR PROGRAM (give or take a hundred billion).
thats not at all how that works we pay for it now and they build the subs which have a delivery date of 2053 the ship builders will just build them and then deliver the delivery date has a lot of factors into it like that America has lost 90% of its shipyard capabilities since the end of the cold war as for going over budget it may or it may not it depends how competent America will be these are existing class submarines they are not a prototype so they likely wont go over budget a lot of America's experimental naval programs like the Zumwalt class or its railgun program were shut down because they ran over budget or took so long to develop by the time they were ready they were already technologically out dated
@@pleonexia4772 I’m sorry mate, but AUKUS is a pay as you go deal. So you pay for stuff when it arrives, or in the case of sustainment, when you do it at the value of dollars at that time. The value of money will be less at various AUKUS milestones than it is now; due to inflation. This is an 80 year program. The cost estimates for AUKUS are in ‘turned out’ dollars - ie, taking into account forecasts of inflation BUT only until 2053. That money only covers the acquisition cost and first phase of sustainment for the second hand Virginia class (some $58 billion in itself), a further three billion to the Americans to improve their rates of production to partly compensate them for the loss in their order of battle occasioned with handing over 3-5 subs to us, plus about 10 billion for the bases and hosting US and UK subs and training RAN personnel. The balance of that $258-368 billion estimate relates to the first half only of the SSN-AUKUS build program, and some sustainment of those vessels once they come into service between around 2043 and when the money runs out in 2053. What is missing from all of that, is the missing money for the last phase of AUKUS - building the last 3-5 SSN AUKUS class subs, plus sustaining an 8 boat nuclear attack class fleet for another 36 to 50 years. This unspoken of cost will be paid on a ‘pay as you go’ basis and at the value of the money when bills fall due. Sustainment for a submarine in ‘constant dollars’ usually equates to 150% of the initial build cost, so on a ‘turned out basis’, the last phase of AUKUS will very likley cost between $450 and $700 billion, meaning the total turned out costs (2023 to 2090+) will be in a range of $700 billion to 1.1 trillion dollars. The reason for the wide range of forecasts given (the government’s $258 to 368 billion estimate to 2053, or my total ‘cradle to grave’ (2023 to 2100) cost estimate of between $700 billion to over a trillion dollars) are so wide, has nothing to do with the very real risk of cost blowouts. That is a seperate risk altogether. The ranges simply reflect the ‘we don’t know’ factor associated with long range financial forecasts given the volatility of inflation. Right now inflation is spiking for the first time in 30 years. Economists dont know with precision when rates will abate down to that comfortable zone of 2-3% pa like we experienced for 30 years. This throws out long range forecasts significantly. Which is why the government cannot be more precise than ‘writhing 100 billion or so’ when talking about only the first 30 years of an 80+ year program. If, costs do actually ‘blowout’ and given BAE Marine’s track record, I’d say that’s nearly certain, we could easily DOUBLE those forecasts that I’v discussed above. … something to think about, isnt it?
The new aircraft carrier USS Ford was $12B and the last UK sub was 1.6 B pounds. So why are we paying many times more than that ? It sounds like a complete rip off. They could have easily got 1000 F35 with full warehouses of missiles to go with them, as a comparison. Did anyone in Defence advise the government on how much more deterant could be bought for the same price ? For that price it feels like we got severely ripped off and makes me think we could have easily developed a full suite and full spectrum of complementary defence technologies on our own.
The fact they can spend so much money without any say from the Australian people, who are paying for the submarines out of tax dollars, makes think do we really live in a democratic country.

365 Billion is around $24,000 per working age adult in Australia. (15-64 years - approx 15.6million) Imagine paying that down along with your University and home loans! Absolutely crazy!
@@solthegamer3769 it might seem that across 30 years,24000 is not a huge amount- you have to remember this is not 24000 that simply comes from nowhere. You and I might work super hard for one to two years to save up that amount. so that is 1-2 years equivalent of working hard and saving- toiling away for a few submarines to defend and arm australia. We had a good deal going already that went though a thorough, years long procurement process - just is the same process with naval ships. All military purchases of massive scale are supposed to go through such a process- that involves tendering and strategic long term planning with the military establishment. Not a bunch of politicians shaking hands and signing papers! It seems all our military projects with the US are quick decisions that military advisors fought against - take the joint strike fight for example. From the Griffith institute: Lt. Gen. S. Clinton Hinote, the US Air Force’s deputy chief of staff, has serious concerns about the outdated software, saying last year: the block that is coming off the line right now is not a block that I feel good about going up against China and Russia. He noted recent war games focused on the prospect of defending Taiwan from Chinese air attacks showed: Every [F-35] that rolls off the line today is a fighter that we wouldn’t even bother putting into these scenarios. This means Australia’s F-35s appear not to be as good as the potential opposition. It seems Australia is paying to lose the air combat battle.
An important point on the comment regards getting 20 conventional subs vs 8 nukes: at present, Australia struggles to recruit enough crews for our 6 Collins class conventional subs. Turns out most people don't like spending months at a time crammed into a metal tube with around 60 other *sweaty* sailors and no beer. So running 20 of the things is right out. Nuclear subs being bigger and having electricity to spare support luxuries like ice cream and Xbox, presumably we are banking on these being sufficient recruiting draws to make up the difference.
Ok but if they bought less subs they could just increase the pay for the other subs. Im an american but as far as I'm aware nuclear subs arent better for non power projection means (eg look at the I believe swedish sterling engine subs) . they one day marketed the navy hard to us (I'm american). Im in engineering school and they basically offered to pay us a lot of money to sign on for nuclear subs for 4 years after college to run the reactors. And even then no one in my class was willing to do it. So the conventional sub argument is still good IMO.
Nuclear subs have much higher required crew, so we need many more submariners anyway. We couldn't quite get away with double the number of conventional subs but it would be close.
I sat in a meeting with members of my workplace when last year's budget dropped. My workplace is in the finance sector and not one of the people in the meeting blinked or was shocked when at the top of the list of government spending sat 'Defence....$550billion' with not one detail on where, how and on what this taxpayer money is to be spent. I voiced my concern and was met with silence. No one...not one of my colleagues had the capacity to question our government spending half a TRILLION on defense as they are totally fooled by the MSM and had accepted that "China is bad and about to start a war with everyone". 2:16 Don’t worry, as a Canadian, I know that if we are attacked, it’s a 50/50 if America will defend us or invade for resources. As for if they are attacked, we probably have zero choice but to assist, because, you know, we share borders and if they fell, we’re the obvious next choice for invasion. That, and good relations with a rather striking reputation of being a military focused country, is vital, even if it’s for only mere survival. Which I’d hope the relationship is far more robust, fair, and helpful for both parties.
Love it! Some hard hitting info there. And fair enough, you make some good points about the limits of what can be done, as well as practical measures like joining a union or political party.
As Assange once quipped, Choosing between Trump and Clinton is like choosing between cholera and gonorrhea. Much the same for ALP vs LNP. We need a stronger independent or a revolution. We're talking about preventing WW3 - its worth a revolution rather than being locked into some binary choice.

The talk about all our previous prime ministers has just reminded me of learning about politics in primary school I might be looking into it too much, but as part of our curriculum we were taught about the current prime ministers. It was all negatives, and we read the comics in newspapers about how terrible Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard are. They had 10-11 year olds walking around calling them Kevin Dudd and Julia Gizzard because we thought they were idiots. Thankfully, my family doesn't give a shit about politics, so I was quickly told that idk what I'm talking about, preventing me from being brainwashed into thinking they were terrible. I was 10, I knew nothing and yet was being told to believe a certain idea. We learnt a little bit about John Howard, and guess what, all positives. Like I said, I could be looking into it too much, but this sounds like straight up propaganda being taught in Australian schools to literal children who still thought the opposite gender was gross.
wait until you see the fascist shit they teach about World War II. Literally the Nazi version of events. No acknowledgement of the Soviet Union's critical role in defeating Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy (and the West's refusal to help until the eleventh hour). We desperately NEED these Subs, and stronger UK and US relations. Consider the following, every attack helichopter, attack aircraft, re-supply & transport aircraft, tank, APU, anti air vehicle, patrol boat, battle ship, submarine... literally EVERY military vehicle we currently have runs on oil. So our countries entire ability to defend itself, relies on the maritime oil trade route that supplies Australias oil needs. Now if a "particular" country were to intercept this route and cut off our oil supply we would be militarily helpless within about a month. These nuclear subs provide a singular attack vessel, that operates independently of oil, and could actually be used to defend our maritime trade routes, and so sheild us from a very real vulnerability in our countries defence. Finally the reason why we need stronger relations with these two countries is because for all of our faults we actually share very similar values. There are 3 types of countries in the world (a bit reductionistic but still...) 1. those that attack their neighbours to conquer and consume, 2. those that don't care about any other country and wouldn't even come to the aid of their neighbour in need, and finally 3. those countries that actively provide humanitarian and defence to countries in need. We are In the 3rd catagory, and it's one reason why we should be proud to be Australian. This 3rd category allignment (along with democratic, and individualist/human rights values we all share) mean we naturally allign with these countries (they are our closest allies!) And as a result better and deeper military relations is a great thing! If we get attacked, what countries would come to our aid? (It's Commonwealth countries and the US). So aukus is a great move, yes it's a heafty price (but that's total operational cost projection, not just what we are paying to buy them) but its actually very manageable over the projected period. These subs are vastly superior to what we currently have and fill a very very big hole/vulnerability in our current defence assets.
Isn’t $370 billion like $15,000 per citizen? There’s so much more which could be done with less to actually improve Australia. That money could literally buy half of Australians new cars, or maybe anything else besides subs.
I heard somewhere this amount is calculated for the entire lifetime of the submarines, including maintenance, crew, servicing, etc so some of that money even goes back into Australia. I haven't bothered to confirm it but it was the same with the f35 being ridiculously expensive but actually misunderstood. again not sure if this is true but worth a look. Thanks jordies love your stuff

I really appreciate Mr. Friendly, as an American, because he sticks to and advocates for the most pragmatic, most effective, and most well-proven *group of people within* the clearly superior party in his political landscape. Our democrats aren’t worthy to even be compared to Labor, but they’re the most realistic chance we’ve got to not collapse into dictatorship. Here in the US it’s a relentless tide of purity tests for the public and profound compromises on policy in private, which turns virtually everyone off from participating in the first place. So we need a voice like his to remind people that all change is incremental, and that there will never be a messiah in our politics (Kevin Rudd excepted, I guess). Anyway, we need an American Jordy, although they’d definitely be killed as soon as they got any real attention…

The 2nd of which, in 1975 ended up making labor lose the election (A few months after the gov.general kicked him out as PM)

I saw Jordan at a grocery store in Sydney yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face.

When you factor in inflation AUKUS is a ONE TRILLION DOLLAR PROGRAM (give or take a hundred billion).
lmfao Jesus Christ... I don't think that's how inflation works haha
thats not at all how that works we pay for it now and they build the subs which have a delivery date of 2053 the ship builders will just build them and then deliver
the delivery date has a lot of factors into it like that America has lost 90% of its shipyard capabilities since the end of the cold war
as for going over budget it may or it may not it depends how competent America will be these are existing class submarines they are not a prototype so they likely wont go over budget a lot of America's experimental naval programs like the Zumwalt class or its railgun program were shut down because they ran over budget or took so long to develop by the time they were ready they were already technologically out dated

From the Griffith institute:
Lt. Gen. S. Clinton Hinote, the US Air Force’s deputy chief of staff, has serious concerns about the outdated software, saying last year:
the block that is coming off the line right now is not a block that I feel good about going up against China and Russia.
He noted recent war games focused on the prospect of defending Taiwan from Chinese air attacks showed:
Every [F-35] that rolls off the line today is a fighter that we wouldn’t even bother putting into these scenarios.
This means Australia’s F-35s appear not to be as good as the potential opposition. It seems Australia is paying to lose the air combat battle.
But- the evil Chinamen and their opposition to the US!! You can't spell "US" without "us"!
2:37 best impression ever. Comedic gold 👏
It's Mardi Gras at sea everyday for the right guys. I don't think it's being marketed to the right target market.
Imagine if Jordies actually consulted people who had actual knowledge of defence instead of regurgitating Keating's lack of it. Bad bias showing.
Also nuke subs have longer endurance (better suited for combat against China)
Nuclear subs have much higher required crew, so we need many more submariners anyway. We couldn't quite get away with double the number of conventional subs but it would be close.

Don’t worry, as a Canadian, I know that if we are attacked, it’s a 50/50 if America will defend us or invade for resources.

The talk about all our previous prime ministers has just reminded me of learning about politics in primary school
I might be looking into it too much, but as part of our curriculum we were taught about the current prime ministers.

You buy insurance with the hope of never using it. Why does China not want Australia to have insurance?

Nooo, the government would never do something like that, don't you remember how *sad* the CIA was after JFK and MLK died? They were heartbroken by the idea that someone would shoot another person.
@@WhiteWolf-lm7gj people getting shot by the government for way less. MLK and JFK are famous people in broad daylight they shot, think about if you’re a nobody and stir trouble, not even a second thought
Malcolm Fraser died of a 'sudden illness' when he started talking like Keating.
As an American I’d love to hear more about the corruption in my country home and abroad report on
That's why you have fox and Tucker 😂😂
Jimmy Dore
I saw the title and was like "ya our government would do that"
Damn, Imagine all the gummy bears you could buy with that money
As an Australian born American I want to hear more about this Whitlam guy.
you should watch his final speech at parliament
Elected PM in 1972, first labor guy for about 30 years at that point. He pissed off the CIA for a number of reasons, thus, the Governor General made him resign as PM and there were 2 emergency Double-Dissolutions stemming from labor not controlling the senate. The 2nd of which, in 1975 ended up making labor lose the election (A few months after the gov.general kicked him out as PM)
He guided Australia through the Oil Shock that sent most of our trading partners into recession. Made healthcare and education available to everyone. Upgraded sanitation in our major cities. Instigated our trade with China a year before Nixon ever went there.
I asked my mum why she didn't like him and she said "He did too much". Big mistake to scare the herd like that.
Vincent Lingiari and the walkoff.
Australian Journalist John Pilger has done a lot of work investigating the CIA "alleged" involvement in Whitlam's ousting. I'd watch Jordy's first video then give Pilger's work a read.
I need someone to take a friendlyjordies video and animate the whole thing in the style of Bluey.
