    Did the krylon fusion fully dry, or does it still have some tackiness? That's what I typically fear when painting over things like rubber grips. You never know how it'll react. Seeing this does make me want to paint my 5s. It would look real nice in red.

    • @CourtWatchAu

      Yes in my experience rubber or latex can have a strange reaction to oil based paints.

  • @rolfathan

    Tip for buttons: Instead of tape use blue tak or similar putty. You can really press it in to the point that it depresses into some of the crevices, and keeps it from going on the buttons.

    I love this! It felt really refreshing to see a video on cameras that wasn’t about technical aspects, but about enjoying a little DIY sort of thing that would actually make your camera look cooler. Because it’s true, cameras are tools, BUT COOL TOOLS? They’re just the BEST!

  • @michaelscaplis

    Now that's an original video! Actually think the cream look on the GH5 looks better than white white. A Leica like bronze scuffing look around the edges would also be nice on a Sony A7 or GH5 🙂

    please please please PLEASE make a update video on this camera… The biggest thing stopping me from doing this exact thing to my camera is I’m afraid that the paint wouldn’t hold up, or how the finish would look and feel on the almost rubbery faux leather, or that the camera wouldn’t be used as much due to me, not wanting to mess up the paint job. I would love to hear a one-year update about how it’s holding up!!!

  • @tvftacticalcreative
    @tvftacticalcreative ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Fun idea! One thing you could do is just hit it with a flat finish clear coat, especially the cage to keep the paint from rubbing/scratching off.

  • @DSLRguide
    @DSLRguide ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does the paint come off around the hinges of the LCD? With the cage, does it get scratched off when you attach other pieces?

    • @otter-pro
      @otter-pro ปีที่แล้ว

      I think, with multiple coats of paint and a final clear coat, should be enough to prevent paint from coming off

  • @matfry2310
    @matfry2310 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Use automotive paint, make sure to clear coat over it. Sand with 600-800 before you paint for adhesion purposes and try to disassemble most of it first. Any connecting points mask off so it doesn't interfere with fitment at the end. If it's a metal body use acid etch primer. Hope this helps.

  • @meljai93

    Unfortunately that's how the edges of all the new smallrig cages come. I prefer a uniform look. Cool ideas though. Paint is a bit tricky though, can peel if not prepped right, can become sticky, collect dirt easier, etc. There are paints specifically made for plastics, such as those used in hobby stores. I've flirted with the idea of doing some kondor blue coloring to my cage to match some cables but for now I haven't tried it. One idea is to go for a Plasti-dip first, because it's not permanent and you can literally peel it off after your testing until you get your process right.

  • @CourtWatchAu
    @CourtWatchAu ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the painting concept, but Caleb i would suggest testing putting some cables eg audio cable next to a painted product in a bag and come back in a month because paint can sometimes affect the vinly or reubber/silicone products its touching. Same with teh rubber grip part on a DLSR, teh pint can sometimes not settle but leave a tackyness due to reacting with the rubber. Finally the painting of the cheeseplates looks cool but i think it could falke off (more than the original paint) when you slide thinsg in and out of the cage , so it could create paint particles that get in your lenses or sensor over time. I dont want to sound negatve, but it is something to consider

  • @MillisecondFalcon

    I agree with many others here that cream looks much nicer than pure white! I just bought a S5 iix and, while most people seem to be a fan of the blacked out logos, I think it looks odd not being in the traditional Lumix colour scheme. So I am thinking about painting just the lettering. Not with a spray can, obviously, but with a brush. But I'm not sure which type of paint would be best, or if nail polish would actually work better. I'll do a bit more research before committing! 🙂

    A masking technique used by modelers is to use silly putty. You can push the putty with a popsicle stick or other tool to get detail shapes. Then spray/airbrush. Putty can be kneaded after to be used a couple more times.

  • @LennertK

    This idea has been on my mind for a long time, not for a body but to paint a black telelens to match the white telelenses by Sony, Canon & Nikon. I don't think there are other brands like Sigma, Tamron etc that do white variants of their lenses. Maybe you could paint a lens and a monitor as well, to get an all-white rig?
    As far as I've read on forums the reason why some brands make white telelenses is that they supposedly stay cooler by absorbing less sunlight, but I wouldn't think heat is such a big issue for most videographers (although a white camera body would definitely stay cooler for longer in direct sunlight, I don't know how much of a difference the lens would make).
    I think it just looks nicer and to the average person it may also look more expensive, which can help with clients perception of value

  • @Finite-Tuning
    @Finite-Tuning ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't see any point in painting a camera body, unless you are an outdoor shooter primarily and either want better camouflage or just a white body to reflect the heat from the sun rather than absorb it. Black + sun ='s hot, I get it in that regard. I'm not booing the video, in-fact I gave a thumbs up! I just think for the time and effort vs end result and net gain, a vented cardboard box would work better for cooling and protection from the sun, as well as camouflage in certain areas. Also, blue painters tape, only, always.... Not dissing the video, just throwing my nickles worth of opinion your way.
