The way I see it, CEO Zalinki is the way he portrays himself to others, Artist Zalinki is his true self, and the janitor is what he wants to be. Like each character represents some piece of himself.
To me, it's a music video about cleaning up the aftermath of a literal pity party. I suppose the janitor signifies a self awareness of the absurdity and irony of having to be left with picking yourself up after beating yourself up for hours on end. This then fits the lyrics and message of how some people tend to unhealthy dwell on their negative emotions through actively searching music that validates their mood. They are upset, they simply wish to be heard or seen, or to be given a straight answer from a sea of disorienting insecurity. However instead of addressing the issue that causes them to feel upset in the first place, they settle with the satisfaction of continuously dwelling on the emotion as it validates them, it causes them to feel victimised and owed an explanation and positive karma from the people around them. This is my first comment on TH-cam, I'm typically a lurker but I'm in a talkative mood tonight haha
To me, the janitor represents the cleaning, the mental reset, it puts away the things that hurt you, but over time the damages to the wall start to be too much for him to clean up.
When you said you were 14 I was surprised. Not because I think young people can't do things; hell, I'm 14. But I haven't met lots of people my age who would be interested in looking this deeply into something. I respect that
thanks! despite my online persona typically being lighthearted and funny, I like delving into the dark stuff every so often. the world is scary, but scary stuff tends to become less scary when you understand how it works
I feel like AZ is how Zalinki feels, and CZ is how he sees his work and the people who watch him. AZ is tired, not as dolled up as CZ, and burned out. But he keeps going, though he doesn't know why. Perhaps it's because drawing is his job and if he stops he doesn't make money. Turning his hobby into his job has sucked the purpose out of it. The line "I don't pay you to ask questions." Can be taken in many ways. Perhaps that's how Zalinki thinks his viewers think. We watch him for entertainment. To laugh and giggle at funny animations. Our views are what pays him. We didn't ask him to be sad, or to take health breaks. We asked him to entertain and that's what he better do. The lyrics to the song also help prove that even him himself (or perhaps others around him) feel as if he's sinking. The lyrics express worry for Zalinki and his state. Lyrics like "Boy you're gonna crash and burn, we're worried!", "Talking bout death and stuff", and of course the infamous "Always listening to music made for sad people." all feel like a person trying to pull themselves out of a sad rut by using what others have told them. He's trying to tell himself that he's being ridiculous and that he needs to snap out of it before he really does get hurt. 'Music for sad people' isn't just a song and silly animation, it's a insight. It's telling his viewers his worries and how his mind is in shambles from overworking himself for us. How a small part of him CZ, is annoyed almost about his state while another part is dancing around in ignorant bliss. His ignorant bliss breaks him out of his prison, as of he's realized we won't hate him for stopping. That he can take breaks. That he has to, or he'll end up in this state again.
Now this is a great video, I gotta say when I first watched "Music for Sad People" the animation isn't what I solely focused on but rather the lyrics of the song and somehow despite the upbeat music I can still feel the emotion being expressed in it, your video helped in giving it another spotlight for things I didn't even notice and I thank you for that :)

I've followed Zalinki for a long while, not thinking I need to really watch a video essay on a big hit of his; but you've done this extravagantly. Thank you for this, and I hope you do more with this career; as long as you have a passion for it.
This video was fantastic, keep it up man. I love Zalinki's music and videos, I know he has made it clear that most of them are meant to be a reflection on his dissatisfaction with his life the way he is or was living it at the release of the video. However I've never thought to take the time to actually sit down and analyze it. Seeing you do this has made me want to give it a shot. So thank you very much, and may I add that your video was honestly amazing, you've definitely put time and effort into it. You're getting a sub from me.

I've got news: I finished a new video essay! except that content ID is doing what it does and striking down the video immediately after upload. it was content claimed by WMG and I can't even just upload it without monetization-it gets blocked in all areas. best case scenario, WMG quickly releases the claim, but I'll still be waiting a day or two until I can release it. worst case scenario (which I'm honestly expecting), WMG fully upholds the claim, and I'll have to butcher the footage and audio just to get it through content ID. and yes, the video is the literal textbook definition of fair use, but I think we know by now that youtube never really cares much for that. in the meantime, you can watch the video on Dropbox. YES.
Im pretty sure you stole this comment from one on the original video
I think it’s also important to note that the janitor is the one who lets AZ out.
huh
Not even because they felt obligated. They just let them out sort of as a 'plus' to getting whatever they needed out of the room.
You have to start somewhere, alot of time its best to start with you habitat
So, in a way, motivation is saved by not caring what others think.

As i analyze the relationship between AZ and CZ, its apparent that CZ abuses him, leaving him in the janitors closet to work and overall carry the workplace on his shoulders.
