The thing I like about Chicago med, pd and fire being connected is that no one is a side character, everyone has their on story happening in the background
If you look really carefully in one of the episodes of Med Ritter comes in as a secondary character as a Family Member but later comes into FD as Ritter and no one realizes he was someone else in Med.
I recently watched this episode and Mouch's reaction actually killed me. He shows up a lot during Chicago PD, along with Severide and actually, Otis does a few times (Still pissed on his death!). It's really cool seeing them come over and talk to intelligence, for cases or for whatever.
