Well done, that was a huge undertaking,I have the identical bike here in Sault Ste Marie,On. Bought new in the fall of 2006, now with 112,500 km trouble free, I also do ALL my own maintenance and repairs, still have all the original valve shims in it after 2 valve clearance checks, gonna do the 3rd check very soon🤞, the only recalls I know of were the ignition switch , high altitude ECU replacement (depending on your VIN number)and extra ground harness, (I went with the Brodie ground harness from an FJR forum member) I also did the BRP about 12 yrs ago, as far as I know ,there were no known issues with the transmission on this bike, so the previous owners must’ve been pretty hard on it !!

I have over 76,000 miles on my 2013 FJR1300a, and never any issues with it. Although since buying it with less then 2900 miles on it, I've ridden it like my grandmother would, if she rode a motorcycle, instead of a unicorn.
However since one day before too long I'll be removing the engine to replace the cam chain and shim the valves, I'll do a thorough inspection on the transmission.
If there's anything else that you can think of that I need to pay particular attention to while it's opened up, I'd sure appreciate the input. Thanks.

Hi. Not an expert here but if the tranny is working OK I wouldn't touch it. Maybe inspect that there is no wear on the second gear dogs. Only thing I would say is to follow procedures meticulously. But this bike is definitely not a granny bike. Good luck.

Due to the transmission shift pattern of 1 down and 4(or 5) up, it’s usually always 2nd gear that can fail or cause problems because of the longer shift past neutral, and when accelerating hard , or careless lazy shifting,it’s the easiest shift to miss so extra care must be taken during the 1-2 shift , always make the 1-2 shift very deliberate and positive. This is why it’s usually always a second gear issue when you hear of motorcycle transmission problems.

Big props to you Fred - many would be too daunted to approach that job. Fred and son nailed it.

My 2003 does the exact same thing. Runs great except....don't hammer 2nd gear. Well done video.

Well done, I have a 2006 and it’s doing the same thing. I just started to research the issue and found your video. It was probably due to hard shifting, it’s got 22k on it and I have ridden it like a sport bike from some stoplights. So it’s probably on me, but it may be a weak design from Yamaha as well.

Hi Kevin. Its definitely a weakness and seems to be happening a lot. I think the gear is too weak for all the engine's power. Probably 4 gear dogs instead of three would help. Don't understand why they don't fix it?

I ride and 04 and mine does the exact same thing. Gonna baby it for a while then tear it apart. Probably do it this summer. Yuck. Thanks for the inspiration.

Maybe I won't either. My bike is ancient and not worth much. I bought my bike for $1500 and it has the front lower fairing missing. I've got another couple years till I'm out of college and figured I'd buy a newer one then. If this bike does take the ultimate crap on me I might buy a smaller and inexpensive bike in the meantime. It's really hard to find an FJR at a really low price point. However, there is a bunch of sweet deals to be had at the 4k+ price points.

Darth: good luck to you. I'm so glad I did mine, I've clocked 120 km on some short rides and the second gear is rock solid! Would do it all over again!

I found you video very educated and so handy because I have a 05 fjr here in Sd. And I am not used quite often because I like the way it rides and looks.
    Any way great job...

    Hi
You don’t happen to have the parts list you used for the repair?
I have a 2010 FJR with same issue.
I was going to carry out the repair myself also. It would be great to know what is needed and order those in advance. Thanks

Hi Tony, I changed the two gears, the stretchy bolts (very important) and all gaskets. However, I opened mine up to have a good look before ordering the parts. But this issue is a common one. Check out the parts charts on Partzilla. It's all there. Good luck. Mine is still running perfectly!

hi do you think that sticky clutch plates (a classic FJR issue) can lead to such a damage?

    • @lafarm123
      @lafarm123  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

iele: not sure. I actually thing the gear should have four dogs instead of three. FJR has a lot of power and second gear gets quite solicited. Put 6000 km last season and the bike did great. Second gear seems to be a common issue.

I can almost guarantee this 2nd gear issue is an operator input issue, Yamaha’s build quality is top notch, just google “world’s most reliable trouble free motorcycles”and Yamaha is ALWAYS number one and Kawasaki a close second, (Kawasaki is actually my favourite brand).

Something to think about. Good points. My bike has been running A1 since. However fourth gear doesn't always go in smoothly. All the others «slip» smoothly in but fourth sometimes goes in rough with a grating sound. Any ideas?

Hey James. It must be over 200 pounds. Can't lift it alone... I creepy crawled it up the ladder on an aluminum ramp (not recommended). Good luck you you!
