I’ve recently noticed being extremely anxious when I wake up. But I think it was a mix between my loud alarm, having to do homework later, the sun, and maybe even my fan buzzing. So I’ve started changing my many (many) alarms to just vibration, closing my blinds before going to bed, and setting a timer on my fan. Last night I fell asleep fast enough to where I don’t even remember falling asleep. I also woke up rather at peace instead of anxious. It was a nice change of pace 😅 hopefully it lasts

Wow! Holy moly, so I guess I am not the only one. Lol.
But actually, I don't find the sunlight in the morning to be overwhelming... I find that sunlight while I am trying to drive is extremely anxiety-inducing for me sometimes. So, I have started wearing sunglasses while driving and it helps so much! I also find sunlight to be jarring when I first exit from indoors to outdoors- particularly if the indoor setting was very dimly lit or dark.

I love hearing you talk about stim songs - I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone else talk about it that way before! I have also always had my go-to stim songs. Sometimes I’ll put them on intentionally and listen over and over again, and other times one of those songs could just come up next on Spotify and then I end up listening to it on repeat. Most of my stim songs have meaningful lyrics, but some are just because of the beat.

I smiled when you talked about sand. I was very specific about sand when I was a child. When I was around 2 and we went to the seaside for vaction I started bringing sand from the other part of the beach to where I was playing. And mom asked me where I am going and I said "to bring sand". Of course it didn't make sense to her because it was sand everywhere. But indeed, there was this kind of sand that had a different texture that was really pleasant and it was very good for building. In fact when I was older I tried to make sand into that texture so it's the best for building.
I still use music as a stim. I have hard time connection to certain emotions that grow inside me and when untreated start influecing my mood greatly. Proper music helps me process that. The hard part is finding the right kind of music mood to match whatever needs processing.
I sense negative emotions of others but in my case it makes me confused cause I don't know how to address them. That was the reason why initially I started avoiding people because their emotions were too difficult to manage. In fact I've got the tendency of trying to fix emotions of those close to me so I stop feeling them. I know now that I cannot fix anyone's emotions. But got greatly into psychology because of that (and trying to figure out myself as well). I'm starting my coaching path.

I really related to the thing about the stroller. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been really into rollerblading and skating. The appeal for me is the feeling of the wheels going over smooth surfaces, hearing like the hum of the bearings and stuff and a lot of the time people would comment that like my form was weird because you’re supposed to bend your knees to absorb the shock but if you want to feel the reverberation, standing with straighter legs makes the sensation go further up your body and so all the time when people see me skate, they’re like oh you stand so high up it’s kind of odd but because it’s a sensory experience, it becomes subconscious

I’m AuDHD and I know exactly which of my twins has farted and what they’ve eaten. Also water DOES taste different across brands and countries and some taste downright bad and literally does taste like poison and some is sweet and delicious, not in a sugary way, just you could have a smooth drink and it fills you up so good. Alanis Morisette first album was my comfort album for at least a year, would keep listening to it every night, even now it transports me back to summer nights with the AC whirring and it calms me. Your comment about stores makes me wonder if the reason I always hated going with my mom to the fabric store was that she could typically only go late in the day; the lights were incredibly bright; there was nowhere to sit; the carpet was very thin, worn, and coarse; and every fabric I grabbed was either too much sensory input or I was told to not put my hands on… It’s not like I had an evil plan to be a jerk every time we went there or was an unruly child…but every time by the end of it my mom would need a quiet car ride home :\

Oh my gosh, you've bought back so many of my childhood memories of similar experiences - I totally relate to this! The metallic tasting water from the tap in the house I grew up in was awful, and the water felt so thin! Also, the specific feel of really fine and wet gravel under my feet at the botanic gardens where my mother would take me, and the warm wet green smell of the green houses - it used to wrap me like a blanket. I used to feel the different textures through the wheels of the pram too! I loved the ultra smooth basalt sidewalks in Adelaide, and the smooth but bumpy feel of the worn down glass tiles over the basement levels in the city. I hated sharp gravel and spongy lawn. I was so intimately connected to my world. :)

My problem with water and other fluids is that I simply don't get thirsty (until I'm almost dehydrated), so my mom always had to remind me to drink something.
And a good thing that they invented headphones, as I would drive everyone crazy by listening to the same song over and over again. I still do.
The same goes for the (ideal) texture of ice cream: even today I can't resist the urge to get it completely "right".

    • @Atenana

Same, but sometimes I feel like even if I am a bit thirsty, unconsciously I wait a bit longer, because of my absolute hate for water 😂

As a person who suspects I have AUdhd, the stim songs and feeling other peoples sadness really resonated for me! Music is overall a big part of my life and singing is even kind of a stim for me:) sometimes I’ll find myself singing the same verse of a song over and over again to myself because it keeps replaying in my mind, which typing it out sounds similar to echolalia? But I have a few songs that when it comes I get really excited and it feels nice in my brain and I drums along to the beat or just along to the instruments in the back(recently my stim songs have been the whole soundtrack of Epic: the musical, which has become a sort of special interest/hyperfixation the last 5 months). I particularly like songs I can belt in(musicals) cuz the feeling is coming from my chest and I can change my mouth shape or vocal folds to make it sound different:DD it’s honestly really fun! And the sadness thing, I’ve always been a really empathetic emotional person, and when I see people who are sad, or feel to me sad, I get really sad and I want them to feel better. If I don’t do something to brighten their day even a little bit, the feeling of sadness kinda keeps growing as the day goes on till I just need to check on them. it’s the same with most feelings, anger, happiness, anxiety, etc. (Except on the more positive ones I don’t really check on them, I just happily feel them be happy:) oh and now that I think about it the feeling of water does really matter to me- McDonald’s water is on top it’s just the perfect taste and thickness

The water thing is SO REAL. I grew up on well water, and we could tell (I suspect my family is full of ND people, but none of us have been diagnosed and I'm finding it impossible to find resources for diagnosing as an adult now) when things went off with the water and we needed to get it fixed. We filtered for a long time, too, even with a well, purely because of the taste. City water is just disgusting, I have to force it down because it tastes, like you were phrasing it, very chemical and poisonous. Too much of a chlorinated, "city pool" taste. I have a hard time staying properly hydrated, always have.
The soothing of upset people thing is also very eerily familiar. I still feel physically sick when people cry or look upset and I try to cheer them up and reassure them as quickly as possible. But there are stories from when I was in Head Start (I'm Hard of Hearing) told to my parents by my teacher about how the other 4-year-olds were distraught and crying and I would immediately go over and wipe their eyes and pull them over to color or play with me; my teacher joked with my mom that I made her life way easier that year. 😂 This has been wielded against me so much, though, that I now feel like I have to fight this instinct. People will seem to realize I'm 'like that' and try to twist any disagreement around to make me the bad guy by crying and convincing me to soothe them and apologize.
I think this is a waaaay more stereotypical example, but SOCKS. Oh my gods, SOCKS have been the BANE of my existence my entire life. My mom would get so mad, it'd take me 10 minutes every morning to get the seams positioned juuuuust right on my toes, and as soon as I got home those suckers were getting yanked off. It wasn't until I was 5 and a friend of my grandmother's (she was called 'odd' by the other adults, but I always got on with her and I wonder now if she was ND for many reasons) showed me how to turn my socks inside out to prevent the seams from hurting so much. She was a pretty rad lady and, later in life, I drew on her example to feel more confident in wearing the clothes I prefer, that are most comfortable and attractive to me.

I'm 53 and not officialy diagnosed - well got tested a few years back because I was sure I was but, after many hours of testing, the lady said I wasn't autistic because I could look at them in the eyes when talking (was "drilled" to do it), wasn't good in geography, was fairly good at jugding emotions (had to learn for my safety when younger) had a good imagination, etc.
I let it go and thought it was only acute anxiety disorder as they mentioned. But now, back on it and I'm 200% sure I am - new info about high masking women is helping me, as well as your workbook on masking and stimmings 😊
Empathy... I feel you! (no pun intended) I am VERY empathetic and feel everyones emotions around me and from afar sometimes. Exhausting...
I am alone in this discovery journey (no help from family) but I really don't mind. It's all worth it! (For myself)
Thank you so much for everything!

bring my own water from home.
Another thing! I don't know if this was an autism thing, but I have always LOVED car rides, didn't matter where we were going because they were (and still are) very therapeutic for me. When I was very little I would start crying because I could tell when we were on our way home, I don't remember how I could tell, but I just could I guess.

I definitely relate to the water situation! I can easily taste the difference between the tap water in my house versus a friend's house, and the difference between brands of bottled water (Scottish, so water sourced from Highland springs or lochs versus Lowland bodies of water and English/Welsh lakes) and their tastes compared to tap water.

After watching one of your videos i got really encouraged to study it since i realized how i get mute when i am overwhelmed and burned out and i can not speak unless i am forcing myself to mask and it gets me even angrier. I decided to teach my sisters and brothers sign language as well it will be fun for them and it will be a huge help for me. But i am asking you to make the series rather than searching some other resource is because my brain will prefer to focus on your vids and your mind and the way you talk i am completely sure if i decided to learn somewhere wlse my brain will lose interest completely and i would do it. Literally yes for all of these things!!
Ugh, water. It took me forever to get used to the water when I moved. I also use the same water bottles all the time, and we buy the same fridge filters every time. Thankfully I’m okay with the filtered water at my work lol still can’t drink tap water though!
Definitely yes for the music thing. My favorite songs are definitely stims that I play over and over. Good songs are almost a… religious experience, I guess? Or euphoria? That’s the only thing I can relate it to haha
And same for me with the empathy. I can feel peoples feelings very deeply and it became a habit to just smile at everyone. I cry constantly at every little thing and I cry at like every single movie even if I can’t relate to it, which is apparently weird?
And I super relate to the stroller thing! I don’t remember when I was in a stroller but I had a toy stroller that I absolutely loved and there were definitely floor textures I preferred!
It’s so interesting to me how so many of us have the same experiences!

I highly recommend a clearly filtered brand water filter. It takes out the weird chlorine after taste from city tap water. I always grew up with well water and have been so used to it that when we recently bought a house with city water i immediately tasted and smelt the difference. It literally smells like chlorine its gross. My husband cant even tell the difference but its so obvious to me! The water filter completely takes that weird taste away which has been great so i recommend that to anyone with the same issue. I believe they have reusable water bottles with the filter as well

Okay, seriously freaking out!! Every one brought memories of identical experiences, and now I can’t stop remembering more!! I had forgotten them and only remembered feeling different. I’m considering if to get assessed for ASD, and definitely fit the HSP profile. Do you believe these are all ASD related? (PS - I’m almost 60!) Just for fun, any chance it drives you crazy if someone breathes on your arms, even if it’s you, especially when trying to sleep? It’s a major sensory overload. Noticed it recently and wondering if just me. As a young child, I would lay on Grandma’s kitchen floor and draw imaginary lines around the star patterns, endlessly. Never thought it could be stimming. I loved family get-togethers but the noise and activity were too much, and I might have been using that as a way to calm? It’s all so new to me. Thanks for sharing, even though it all seemed odd - helping me feel less alone!!

I liked it too. One reason I can’t do most therapy channels is that I feel behavior shamed. It is reassuring to be with people who don’t think that talking about farts or whatever is some kind of social transgression. I have to expend an awful lot of energy trying to modify the ways I interact that are truly problematic. It’s really important for me now to be able to not worry too much about the things I say that are odd to others but frankly not that big a deal. So thank you, Irene.

I grew up with well water, and I certainly hated city water, but who wouldn't? All that crap they put in it to make it safe to drink. I remember observing that in elementary school (city water), and I could also tell that the water got worse after a heavy rain, because there was more runoff crap in the water and they had to add more chemicals to fine it -- the city reservoir is a dammed section of a creek. This is completely normal though, right? 😉
Anyone else think that bottled water tastes like the plastic bottle it comes in?
And yeah, I don't drink enough water, though I tried harder after the kidney stone. I have concluded that I just don't perceive thirst that much. Or needing to pee.

Tap water was the worst! When I could get clean filtered water, I was much better about drinking water. I used to play with sound dampening a lot as a small child by closing my ear canals. I also liked the texture of smoothed flour, pudding, finger paints, and glue. I still like the smell of scotch tape, playdoh, crayola crayons, and post its. I did the same thing with truck drivers. This is fascinating to me, the aversion to drinking water and not having thirst quenched by water alone. I actually often objected to certain flavours as a child on the basis that “it tastes like poison” but couldn’t explain what I meant. I’ve recently discovered that adding unsugared electrolytes to water makes it so much easier for me to drink, and I can gulp down a whole glass without pause whereas it would take me hours to drink the same amount of plain, flat, nasty water. How I struggled to get down the 2 litres I had to drink for my pregnancy ultrasound back in the day!

Most autistic people only lack empathy according to half of the psychological definition. According to the ordinary definition we usually don't have any problem with empathy. Most of us care about people. We often have a hard time reading people. This is called cognitive empathy in psychology. We may lack this. But if we know someone is hurting most of us care. We also might show that we care in a different way than most people do. Our hearts are usually in the right place.

Im currently gathering evidence and trying ti find out if im autistic but im finding it difficult because right when I think im leaning towards neurodivergent, i watch a video somewhere and convince myself im more neurotypical. I like dplaying with the stuff on the ground at playgrounds, I can tell certain peoples smells but its usually someone very close to me, like family, i definitely get the different tastes and textures in water but my ability to differentiate is not so refined that i stopped using fountains and stuff (though temperature definitely changes taste and texture), and Ive onky rarely had a repeat song. Ive mainly had albums or a single artist that ive put on repeat and disliked listening to anything else. Ive always been kind of okay at adjusting to things, maybe because i had to.

    Came across your channel recently.
I self diagnosed myself a few months ago. Probably it is Aspergers. I had had a severe depression previous autumn. In the context of the very those thoughts, we visited a psyhiatrist with my parent for the first time at the age of 24, she said it is probably aspergers, but not exactly.
When not being a child , is it possible still having some issues when it comes to study time - concentration, lack of desire, etcerera? In instance, having to learn new knowledge at work, to pass tests or something alike during taking a new degree for a diploma graduation? And I don't know how to name this trait when you form sentences with hardship, though English isn't my first language.
